If I were to go the unlocked phone route, how exactly would that work? Could I just buy it, take it to the store, and they put in the SIM card for me and then everything works?
well the thing is is that you can't go that route with Verizon, you have to do it with either AT&T or T-Mobile. Verizon and Sprint are on CDMA, and while it's technically possible to get an unlocked phone for those carriers, usually it doesn't happen.
So if you really want Verzion, you can't really do the unlocked route.

If you're going Verizon I would suggest looking on craigslist for a phone somebody is selling - buy that and then sign up for month to month with Verizon. They don't use SIM cards though.
Your best bet is to check some other carriers. I sell three different carriers and I've seen $400 dollar deposits on one carrier and $0.00 deposits on others. Check T-mobile, Sprint, and AT&T. I know T-mobile has flex-pay if nothing else, which is just buying your phone for full price and getting contract-esque rates without a contract.
So, I was thinking of getting an Nokia E71 - Does anyone have an opinion on this phone?

What are the odds of the HTC touchpro2 hitting verizon any time soon? Because that phone is pornographic. They took every minor complaint I had about the touchpro and fixed it and I am prepared to give a man money for this phone.
Actually, I would be happy if anybody knows who is getting this phone when because I'm a little sick of Verizon anyway.

No release dates or carriers have been announced yet. Not even sure if it's hitting in GSM or CDMA versions first. My guess is June.
i've been eyeballin that phone as well. most news online seem to think that the cdma versions are coming out q2 for verizon and q3 for sprint. the verizons version is called rhodium and no one knows how verizon is going to gimp it yet. i figure they'll kill gps, tethering, use an ugly gui, and have less ram.
Verizon always offers tethering. It's just another $30 on top of your $30 data plan. They'll probably kill GPS because they're dicks, the GUI will probably stay the same, and maybe they'll make it look ugly as shit like the first TPro.

grrr.
my renewal has been up since mid-feb and I was going to get the touchpro but I just HAD to take a look at this one. . .
What the hell does verizon have against GPSes? Do they also own garmin or something?

They prefer to sell you their $10/month navigation service rather than to let you use whatever you'd like.

For anyone stuck with Verizon the Alias 2: Keyboard Boogaloo should be releasing in a bit. The Alias has been a pretty sweet dumbphone. Upgrade should be interesting.. we'll see how that keyboard works out.
I'm honestly shocked that people are pegging the touch 2 for this summer, after it seems like we waited years for the touch pro (1) to come out in the US. (and are still waiting for the xperia)

No carrier is going to pick up the Xperia as a contract based phone. I'm almost positive of this. It's WM6.1, and 6.5 is two months away, 7.0 six months from that? Not that the phone isn't awesome or anything.
Anyone know where I can get unlocked phones? I'd like to get a Sony Ericsson and I'm on AT&T, but the prices that they charge without a contract is ridiculous.
Simultaneously, I don't want a new contract because I've got like 3000 minutes in rollover.
yea, honestly, if you have that many, you're never going to use them. It's purely a marketing trap designed to keep you on their service or to keep you from going to a contrac that's cheaper. I'd seriously just give it up and sign a new contract. You're talking about 61 hours of minutes.
So, is it too late to jump on the iPhone bandwagon, since apparently there's supposed to be a new one coming out in the summer? I don't really follow cell-phonery.
The shadow is pretty cool, but if you don't need smartphone features, I'd go with the Sony. That's about as detailed of a review as I can give, but if you check phonescoop's customer reviews, you'll see what people love and hate about each phone.

I've tried both and I'd go with the Sony. It's got 3G and GPS and the older Shadow honestly has a pretty slow processor. Plus the data feature for the Sony will cost you less and you don't need to get a data feature for it to get the rebate, which you do on the Shadow.
Actually the thing is I would be getting either of the phones for free because I am getting hooked up. Dunno which one to get. On the one hand, the old shadow is sleek as fuuuuck. So sexy.
Just got a G1 last week and I LOVE IT. It's by far the best phone I've ever used. I love the apps for it and the price was right at 150 dollars with a contract!
I'm looking for a new phone as a toy. Either staying with t-mobile or going to at&t (preferred).
I already have an iPod Touch and enjoy some of the apps but have been keeping an eye on some of the Nokia phones. I don't see a huge reason to get an iPhone since I have an iPod Touch (unless someone can convince me).
The Nokia N95 (3G).
Here are some highlights:
$300 on newegg unlocked without buying a 2 year contract.
Ability to use the phone as a modem (should I be worried about overage charges on the so called "unlimited" plans?)
Wi-Fi Calling: Some of my friends live out in the boonies, no reception but they definetly have wi-fi.
True GPS:
5 Megapixel Camera: (fairly important for me)
Cons: Extra cost for storage (US loses the 8gig default memory size)
Camera: While it's still 5 megapixels, the US version loses some lenses
How does this compare to some of the other smart phone offerings from someone like HTC or even Nokia's other phones?
the N95 won't work on T-Mobile's 3G, if that matters to you.
Also, I personally think the N95's time is over. Sure it was a good device, but that was like, 4 years ago now.
If you want a Nokia phone, AT&T is supposed to be releasing the E71, which is a pretty good S60 phone. Otherwise, look at the HTC touch Diamond if you don't care about a keyboard, or the Touch Pro if you do.

You can snag an E71 for around $249.99 with contract, or probably under $400 unlocked (IMO, a much better choice).
If anyone was thinking about the Memoire or was curious about the issue I posted, T-Mobile said it's a network issue and they're working on a fix. No timeframe was given, was just told 'soon.' So it's not a hardware issue if anyone was concerned.

I would wait, rumored refresh in June/July will probably shit out a new phone. Apple's terrible about keeping secrets, so usually these things are pretty accurate. Or you could just get a Pre and pay less on your plan for more features and a faster internet connection. If it doesn't fail. We shall seeee.
Does anyone have opinions on the Motorola Zine ZN5? I'm going to buy my sister a cell phone for her birthday and she mentioned the Zn5, but I want to get her a quality device.

The first significant thing living here taught me is conformity costs money, and everybody pays.

I wound up just giving in and blowing a portion of my gift from the IRS [yes JAEF, "free money from the government!"] on an iPhone and an extra line on our FamilyTalk plan, or whatever the AT&T group thing is. Are there any apps I absolutely must have yesterday?
I can't even figure out how to turn down the volume while I'm browsing the Intertrons in Safari -- it only turns down the ringer volume. And how do I get rid of some of the shortcuts on my Home screen?

I'm leaning more towards the shadow. Y/n?
I'm fairly sure we're on the cheapest contract.

If you have a Mac you can use garageband to make ringtones. Not sure about Windows.
