I can't even figure out how to turn down the volume while I'm browsing the Intertrons in Safari -- it only turns down the ringer volume. And how do I get rid of some of the shortcuts on my Home screen?
If you double-click the home button it'll pop up a little ipod-control window that has, among other things, a volume slider
As for shortcuts - if you hold down on one of the shortcuts they'll start wiggling, and ones that are deletable will have an X in the top left corner; you can't delete most of the default apple ones, though (you can however hide them on a far off icon screen)
Dont suppose you guys cover accessories? I need to find a good bluetooth headset for conference calls. Right now I'm looking at the Jawbone 2 or the Plantronix 955

I'm really partial to the Jabra BT-530 [aka Jabra Blackout]. It's got pretty good noise cancelation, over 5 hours of talk time, an actual on/off SWITCH (holding the same button for various things is really stupid and an easy way to unpair your bluetooth when you need to use it), headset volume control with amplification, noise cancelation, multipoint, the ability to stream music via A2DP (stereo converted to mono, high quality), and its by far more comfortable than the Jawbone 2 IMO. You can pretty easily snag it for 15 bucks less than that online, but if you want it B&M, I think that's the cheapest you'll find.
I wouldn't recommend the Jawbone 2 at all. i had one, ended up going back to my ancient Motorola h500. It's pretty, but not very functional, and none of the ear pieces actually made it stay in my ear comfortably, and the ear loops are so thin they break really easily.
the N95 won't work on T-Mobile's 3G, if that matters to you.
Also, I personally think the N95's time is over. Sure it was a good device, but that was like, 4 years ago now.
If you want a Nokia phone, AT&T is supposed to be releasing the E71, which is a pretty good S60 phone. Otherwise, look at the HTC touch Diamond if you don't care about a keyboard, or the Touch Pro if you do.
You can snag an E71 for around $249.99 with contract, or probably under $400 unlocked (IMO, a much better choice).
What is improved on the E71 over the N95 besides being newer and having a QWERTY keyboard? Keyboard is preferred but not a hard requirement.
Quick question to iphone users: are there words that your iphone won't let you write without making a typo (at least until the iphone has added the word to the dictionary?)
Like, if you've got an iphone (and have auto-correct turned on) try writing the word 'enfilade' in a text message. Can you do the i? After I've hit e, n, and f, the phone will not let me hit I as the next letter. It'll let me hit either character next to I, and then I can delete that letter and put the 'I' in, but it won't let me type the word properly in one go.
Am I missing something? Is my iphone haunted? Because shit like this just makes me want to stab someone in the face when there's no apparent explanation for what's actually going on.
Alright. Well I'm still pretty angry (yes, it's a stupid little thing, but that's rather the point: what a stupid little thing to do to my phone,) but at least I know it's not just me.
'Canibal' also works (although that's not the proper spelling.)

Is this just in text messages? Not the same, but I have an iTouch and was able to type the words in the "notes" app.
the iPhone/iPod touch will also eventually learn the words you are trying to type. I've trained my iPod touch to stop chaning "fuck" into "duck" People were pretty amused when I'd im them complaining about the "ducking iPod Touch"

Nah, for me it's in notes, text messages, on the internet (ie if I were posting the word enfilade into this post on my iphone right now it wouldn't let me without making a typo --though this is coming from my PC right now) and even in the safari google search box. You have autocorrect turned on?
I know it'll add the words eventually, I just want to know WHY it's doing it. If I'm not making a typo, don't make me make a typo, telephone! It's irritating as hell to not be allowed to hit the letter without hitting another letter first, deleting it, and THEN putting the letter in. It's like the phone inserts a blind-spot on certain letters once you've hit other letters first in combination.

Actually, that's exactly what it does. the iPhone OS has a built in dictionary, and a predictive text feature. So if you are typing the word "toad" in, after you type "toa" the dictionary guesses what word you are looking to type, and will actually make the "d" on the keyboard have a bigger surface area, while the F, c, S, and E will be smaller, since toaf, toac, toas, and toae are not words in it's dictionary. It's a system that works really well, until you are trying to type in a word that's not in the built in dictionary. It eventually figures it out, you just kinda have to bear with it until you get a better relationship with your phone, and it's got you all figured out.
That's not cool . I don't care if it wants to change the word 'toac' to 'toad' AFTER I write it (that's what autocorrecting is) but not letting me write the letter combos at all is pretty gay since then I can't just dismiss the autocorrection (and just passing it off as some typo on my part strikes me as offensive, too.) Are you sure there's actually a smaller surface area to work with? For me that smaller area seems so small as to be nonexistent, I can't get it to let me put in those letters at all. Maybe my giant hands are too giant. That said I'm in the portrait mode, maybe the keys exist in some smaller form in the landscape mode.
Guess I need to turn autocorrect off. Shame since it always made up for the lack of distinct keys, in my case --I can usually get up a pretty good steam on my iphone.
Hate to say it, but this is a case of Apple thinking too little of it's users. And if Apple is going to assume I'm an idiot, I'd rather they buy a fucking websters dictionary and actually put words like enfilade into the phone. It's the digital age, Apple. Storage is not that expensive.

I think it's more the processing power to search the dictionary for common words with that spelling and possible spelling from letters around it that they are worried about.
But yes, it's severely annoying at times. Combined with the fact that in most programs you are stuck using the keyboard in tiny portrait mode because despite showing off you can tilt and use the device in landscape, they aren't going to let you type in landscape in all apps...

Eh I think it solves the problem if you can add the word - ArcSyn is right, a lot more processing power would be needed to deal with every word, especially if you're going to use a word like "enfilade," which I think I've heard someone use (outside of writing) maybe twice in my life. If you can add words to the dictionary and you use enfilade a lot, then problem solved.
I just started using Locale to display a cool "Charging" Wallpaper every time I plug my G1 to charge it.
But I just realized that Locale might be saving wallpaper into memory each time I plug and unplug.
I'm not sure what type of onboard memory it saves to though, Persistant or temporary.
Can I kill my G1's onboard memory bank if use Locale to keep changing my wallpaper?

Anyone here have any experience with the Nokia E63? I totally want the red version of this phone.
From what I've read it's essentially a cheaper version of the E71, as in, it feels cheaper.
All the stats on it look really awesome, and the 3.5mm headphone jack sounds pretty sweet given the ridiculously high music playback time. I mean, is there anything really bad about it besides not being of as high of build quality?

As far as I've read, no. The E71 is supposed to be the ultimate business device, the E63 is designed for consumers.

I guess it only takes two-three entries to 'learn' the word, so I suppose these are fair points. Not that it'll stop me from shaking my fist at Apple.
Any way of telling if that Sony Ericsson TM506 is coming to Canada? Fuck Rogers and their old-ass lineup. I just want a Sony phone that will properly support bluetooth headphones.

Yeah, just pop your sim card out and put it into the nokia. It's seriously that simple.

Mine knows tits now. It learned it after about a day...I'm not sure if that says more about me or about the phone's ability to learn.
So, is it worth it getting a new one with the insurance coverage, or not?
It's got a gash on the bottom, which was the only part that wasn't protected by the cover it came with, perfect.
I felt like throwing the damned thing out of frustration. Now I have to live with two damned concrete gashes on the bottom of my $800 phone, great.
Any ideas on how I can cover it up and not make it look like complete ass?

Wait a second, $800? How did you spend $800 on a G1?
In any case, you might look into a skin from www.skinit.com. They're cheap and should cover up anything cosmetic fairly well.
The insurance is not a bad deal, although it is normally about $130 to replace your G1 with a brand new one. You might just want to buy a new battery door if that's all that's damaged.
It sucks dropping your first smartphone for the first time.
It was actually the bottom left corner of the G1 that got the gash. It's part of the body.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to get through this!

So what's the general opinion on buying phones off Amazon? There are some absolute steals(Touch Pro for 150 after rebates) there but not having an actual human being to deal with makes me wary of it.
Still $400. That's the price on T-Mobile's site before discounts/contract, and the price you'll pay for an Android Dev Phone 1 (same thing as a G1 but with an unlocked bootloader and some other goodies).

Hey guys. I don't know shit about cell phones. Can you help me out?
I want to get a phone tomorrow. Potentially. If it ends up being impossible, I can wait till later.
I want a side-opening phone with a full keyboard, and hopefully big enough keys for my fat ass fingers. A camera would be nice, as would the ability to upload media (songs, ringtones, etc) on sim cards or whatever.
My budget is about $100-135 (About 350 if I wait). I would prefer a phone bill under $40 per month, which seems to exclude any kind of smartphone, because they all appear to be contract-only, so a $100 budget may not be so bad. I only really want a phone to be able to text and IM.
Virgin mobile apparently has a pay as you go plan that would give me unlimited texting and so forth, a medium amount of mobile web access, and fairly cheap phone calls for $36.99 per month.
They also have a phone I was looking at...that I was going to link to, but apparently the virgin mobile website is competing for "slowest on the internet," and I lost patience about ten minutes ago.
Still $400. That's the price on T-Mobile's site before discounts/contract, and the price you'll pay for an Android Dev Phone 1 (same thing as a G1 but with an unlocked bootloader and some other goodies).
Then I'm a blubbering idiot. Heh.
But yeah, I'm sad that my $400 Unsubsidized phone got damaged.
Thanks everyone for the tips, I'm going to go ahead and look into them, I don't want to see these two gashes ever again. It'll just make me feel regretful of ever having to tie my shoes.

I always buy from Amazon. I've done the rebate thing once, fairly painless, but generally I stick to the penny phones, which are all pretty good, I think I'm gonna jump on the Vu this time.
Know that you cannot upgrade though, it has to be a NEW 2 yr contract, new number, new activation fee. After the 2 yrs you can just drop the service and get another new phone, with a new number and activation.
Sprint has a REALLY exciting lineup coming out soon. The Rumor 2 just launched, which is pretty cool. The replacement for the Rant is a touchscreen with slide out keyboard. They're getting a lot of Samsungs, most with touchwiz or some variant, but one with Android OS is coming out late Q3. The Pre may be releasing as early as late may. Blackberry Niagra and the Curve 2 - Electric Boogaloo are both coming to Sprint as well. I didn't know there was a difference between the Niagra and the Curve 2, but cool anyway.
And from the rumor mill, AT&T may be getting on board the Nokia funtrain. The E71 is expected to be a pretty popular device, so we may be seeing a lot more good stuff pretty soon.
