I'm thinking of hopping into this with a few PA guys to pal around with.
what should I get for a decent HOTAS set up? I played this stuff way back when with keyboard and mouse, but I just get horribly numb fingers anymore from trying a keyboard claw when I play flight sim games, anymore.
basically, all I have is an old Microsoft Sidewinder with a throttle nob on it.
I'm willing to spend some money on a good joystick, throttle and rudders if I need it. I have TrackIR, which I use for Arma3 a lot.
also, I'm a leftie so something that can accommodate that would be appreciated.
I'm using gimbaled pulse lasers in my class 1 slots, and gimbaled multicannons in my class 2's. I don't have much of an issue flying around while bringing my weapons to bear. I can try to rely on my lasers more, I just don't like having to go back to base so often. I don't usually take hull damage myself, so bullets are the only thing bringing me back. I wish I could jam pack my unused cargo space to the brim with ammo.
You can certainly swap them, and a Cobra with a higher rated *CLASS FOUR* ( ) power plant can easily push class 2 beams. A top end plant can honestly drive 4 beams. Just understand you'll be significantly slower popping hulls.

I'm really liking my Saitek X-55. It's a better design than the older X-52. They've had some quality control issues, though, so if you get one be sure to check it over carefully.

Ah bollocks, my route died. RIP route. You were a good route. I don't know where I will find the energy to find another one like you.

My last warzone dried up. I bought an advanced discovery scanner and am cruising for a new one. You would think they would be all over the news, but it's been oddly quiet.
What's the best way to get enough reputation for the Dropship/Clipper? I got to Petty Officer and Lord pretty fast, but now it seems like no missions affect my faction standing. And I seem to be allied with just about every Empire corporation within a few jumps of where I am now.
I just kept running the "Send more coffee" and "We need more beer to keep the party rolling" missions from the bulletin board.
I recommend finding a circuit of worlds. High Tech > Agricultural > Extraction. Worked well for me. You won't make bank, but the goal is to include as many economy types as possible in your circuit. You don't need to be making good profits with the money-maker commodities. Just enough to pay for gas and keep the lights on.
Then just keep following the circuit and accepting all of the empire-aligned bulletin board missions that you can. The goal with linking so many economies within the circuit is that somebody manufactures the item that somebody else is searching for.
I just got midshipman rank with the federal navy by doing little odd jobs for the federation in Potriti. Hopefully I don't have much longer to go to Ensign so I can worry about having the 20 million credits handy to buy the dropship.
Yeah I really like the Vulture but I'm getting a little sick of it, so I think the next step will be the Clipper. Won't be able to afford an FDL until I get involved in another community goal, but the Clipper seems like a pretty cool ship that has a good amount of firepower. Will I need turrets or will gimbaled guns be just fine?
Outfitting a clipper for combat is actually comparable in cost to outfitting a FDL for combat. Depending on your loadout, it can cost more. The base hull is cheaper, but as a more massive ship her module costs are far more expensive.
ex: FDL's best thrusters are 5A's at 5 mil credits. Clipper's best thrusters are 6A's at 16 mil.
The FDL's best shield generator is a 5A shield at 5 million credits. Due to the vessel's smaller size, the FDL's shield is actually a good deal stronger than the clipper's 7A shield (at 50 mil credits). A 5A gives the FDL at shied strength of 474.8. A 7A gives a clipper a shield strength of 306.
The clipper can compensate because its power plant gives it an abundance of power, so it has the power budget to spam shield cells and shield boosters (but that's more money for a huge power plant and all of those boosters).
The clipper does make a very capable trading vessel. A trading configuration is much cheaper to outfit. She mostly competes with the Python for trading. The python has the advantage of its mysterious ability to operate from medium pads, while the clipper is much faster and can greatly reduce the time spent in realspace. If you sacrifice some cargo capacity and jump range, you can make a clipper into a superb blockade runner. She can outrun anything capable of mass-locking her and she can tank the damage of anything capable of keeping pace long enough for her FSD to spin up.
The Clipper is definitely more expensive to A-fit, but for a beginner fit (mostly C with some A stuff), it comes out to around the hull price of a FDL. I can technically afford an FDL and insurance right now, but I'm not sure if I want to switch to another dedicated fighter at the moment. They are great, but as aimless as I am it's a bit of a pain to travel in one.
I'm able to launch the game, but I've had a few interesting bugs, like not being able to undeploy my weapon hardpoints.
As far as increasing rep goes, does the faction that I'm doing missions for matter, or just the fact that the missions are from imperial stations?

Both matter, and can work against each other or together. You get much more rep taking missions for the faction that owns the station. If you take a mission at a station from a competing faction you are working at cross purposes usually.
Maybe I should be more specific. I want to increase my empire rank so I can eventually buy myself a clipper. I've done that some, but I'm now at the point where I need to do missions in imperial space to get new rank-up missions to show. Does the faction I do missions for matter in this instance? Are 'resistance' factions anti-imperial?
On you ship's right hand panel, you can bring up a variety of different statistics. Under the "Reputation" and "System Status" sub-screens, you can see the allegiance of each faction. Usually they have a little picture of the Super Power's logo next to their name.

I spotted a bug I think... unless some rare goods are illegal now in some systems? I would occasionally get the illicit cargo warning yesterday.
Oh no. I hope they're not cracking down on rare goods trading.

I don't think that's necessarily a bug. A friend I was running escort with also experienced that a number of times not too long after Wings came out.

I've definitely seen what seem like rare goods listed in the "illicit goods" section of a system overview. I suspect that the more narcotic sounding ones might well be illegal in upstanding systems.
DrakeEdgelord TrashBelow the ecliptic plane.Registered Userregular
There are at least a couple of rare goods that are routinely banned in more restrictive systems. Like any system that bans alcohol will include Lavian Brandy or any other alcoholic rare trade good. Onionhead is another example of a rare trade good that is widely banned across Federation space.

I was hauling rare goods from a guide I found on reddit, and there was definitely at least one rare good that is illicit. It was from the post associated with this image. I believe the illicit rare good was from Yaso Kondi.
Some rare goods are totally illegal in some systems. The creators of the rare goods trade routes are not responsible for any fines incurred while using the route.
Edit:
Citizens are meant to fly just got expanded. If you intend to buy a Clipper in the next week, hurry up and get at least one load of metals to Nu so you qualify for the global reward. This goal is moving at light speed. The Clipper discount is currently at 20% AND RISING!

That doesn't look like a very efficient route, unless I'm missing something.
The thing with those guides (I used a different one) is that they sell the goods at highest price as well. They work out pretty well. I was earning millions in no time.

The cargo racks are there because they're cheap, they don't weigh anything, and hey, why not. I might want to pick up ~stuff~. I kind of have misgivings about having no armament at all, but I'm wanting to keep the jump range at least 30. On the official forums someone posted a build that gets 37 light years, but it was giving up a bit more than I feel comfortable with (no shield generator, for starters).
The sensors/life support didn't really gain me much by dropping them any further, since the weight doesn't change and it didn't shave off enough power for me to be able to drop to a smaller power plant (I'm keeping an A rated plant for the heat dissipation). I could probably go with smaller thrusters since I'm going to be in supercruise most of the time, but after flying a Viper and Vulture being a complete brick would annoy the hell out of me.
Well this is disappointing. Some silly geese are clamoring to nerf wings features all because some traders have been synchronizing jumps with Nav beacons to reduce trade route transit times.

Basically, if your wingmate drops a beacon and you enter supercruise, you're teleported to them. If your wingmate is at a station and does this, you can basically jump to the system where the station is, and instead of arriving at the star, you arrive at the station instead. Cuts down on trading route time significantly.
