"Profitable" is not a word I would use to describe it. Not at all.
If you want to tour civilized space, then it is ok. But if you want to make money, you should stay far away. A rare-goods trade route will probably net you more money while also letting you tour civilized space at the same time.

Finally earned enough for a vulture last night. The weapons it came with are comically small in the giant weapon platforms. I had just enough to buy a couple of class 4 pulse lasers and rebuy some of the stuff I sold on the Cobra. I haven't taken it into combat yet, but so far this thing has been CRAZY maneuverable. Even at 0 pips the engine seems to run at full power. It definitely feels like a killer. Hopefully it will keep me in the fight for longer than my Cobra.

Once you can afford to sink about 5-7 mil into it, it becomes a fucking murder machine.

Yeah I mothballed my type-7 to go buy another vulture. So much fun to fly. Definitely going to keep it for a while - great ship to jump into when hauling space toasters gets too monotonous.

Also has anyone done any recent tests with getting in close to planets?
I would but I really don't feel like making an oopsie 500ly away from civilized space.
We’re only one week away from the Powerplay announcement, but in the meantime I have more ancillary goodness that will form part of the update alongside the new features. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the new drones that are coming and I have one more to tell you about – the prospector drone. This can be fired off to investigate an asteroid and determine its metal/mineral composition. Like all of the other drones (and limpets) each unit occupies a cargo slot and requires an appropriate module to control the type. So you need a cargo hatch breaker module and a collection drone controller to deploy either of those types of drone. The drones are universal and it is up to the controller to determine the actions of the launched drone.
While it does make some of the mining gameplay easier the main reason for adding the drones is to provide scalability for mining (in particular) thus making the larger ships more useful in that role. I also mentioned that there would be more love for mining beyond the new drones and here it is. Two new mining minerals are being added – painite and osmium. There will also be a bonus in created minerals or metals when mining at resource extraction sites. Beyond that we will have low and high intensity resource extraction sites. At low intensity sites there is lower output for mining, but also a heavier system authority presence and lower pirate presence. For the high intensity sites this is reversed, so is more dangerous with more pirates and less security, but also greater rewards for mining there.
It’s not all about miners of course. Continuing from last week’s details on the new mission system there’s another change that I can tell you about. Currently targets for missions are found in USSs (Unidentified Signal Sources), this will remain the case for some targets, but others like assassination targets will have to be hunted down in supercruise before they can be taken out.
I'm out just past Orion in my Cobra. Stopped at EZ Orionis, and continued on to a system with a black hole. Now, I only have an intermediate discovery scanner, and the black hole turned out to be around 20,000ls out. I was cruising toward a star (I put them on the edge of the HUD, and if they fall off, I know they are "in-system"), when I caught movement. I assumed it was some sort of poorly lit gas giant, but as I was flying toward it saw giant amounts of space distortion all over which completely scared the crap out of me, especially when I realized targeting was measuring distance in mm, not ls. Hit the brakes, pulled up, and did not die Amazed I found the damn thing.

It is a 14 day Sale that started on the 14th, so you should have until April 28 to reach Baron and amass the ~ 15 mil for the discounted Clipper.
I don't know precisely when it stops, so I recommend trying to make the purchase at least a day before it ends. It would suck to be the guy who shows up at the station to find out that the sale ended 15 minutes ago.
If you have a type 6 or larger cargo ship, you can probably make Baron in an afternoon or Two (or a few hours spread over the next two weeks) . I'll send you the triangle that I used to reach Baron myself once I get home this evening. It is one big circuit of cashing in reputation quests at each port.
If anyone else wants it, pm me. Feel free to share it, but I only ask to refrain from posting it or any other trade route in publicly viewable places.
The route generated some respectable profit back when I used to run it. There are better routes for making money, but it will keep the lights on and finance all the donations that you are making for reputation.
You will also need some kind of combat capable ship for completing the promotion quests.
I'm personally still in "farm cash money for a trade conda" mode, but I'll probably get around to making better reputation circuits for the Feds and Empire later (those will probably be aimed purely at generating rep though.)

Aah cool, for some reason I thought it was five days. I actually bought one once and returned it because I didn't have the funds to kit it out properly, so I'll pick one up in a few days.
Also has anyone done any recent tests with getting in close to planets?
I would but I really don't feel like making an oopsie 500ly away from civilized space.
I tried to land a sidewinder on one a few days ago. You run into an invisible wall that pushes you away and does no damage. The same would probably be true of stars, if you wouldn't die from being cooked alive first.

Black Holes too, apparently (this appears to be a recent change, from what I have read)

@General_Armchair Very gentlemanly of you. I don't currently have a Type 6, but I have a million and change sitting around and I can scrounge up the money to outfit it and capital for a full hull in a day or two of RES farming. The issue after that is honestly cranking out the money to actually buy the Clipper afterwards, and my play time is just too limited. I have a li'l sprocket at home and it's just not really in the cards for me to grind the rep and then the money for the ship in that timeframe. So I appreciate it, but it's probably wasted on me none the less.
I call bullshit on my asp blowing up because I clipped a goddamn floodlight.

Just racked up a cool half million from a warzone. I am loving the vulture so far. Even with mostly low rated gear I am able to solo anacondas. Even the class 3 pulse lasers really chew through power plants.

Just put about 15 mill into an Asp and outfitting. Still not exactly what I want but it's a really good start. Took it out to a RES to see how it handles in combat and while it's no Cobra she makes a good gunboat.

I wonder if eventually explorers could find and sell the locations of highly valuable asteroids
It'd be pretty cool for fleshing out the prospecting side of Exploration.
Yeah one of the reasons I am kind of holding off is that Exploration really needs some work, from everything I've researched.

I think the reason why it feels like it needs so much work is because it's the path that has the most potential for amazing gameplay. It's already pretty cool if you like discovering vistas and mostly chilled out bopping around space listening to tunes or whatever.
And one day I suspect the Explorers are going to start coming back with some completely crazy information without any kind of warning. That'd be the best update possible for the path.
Not only does the FDL work great for bounty hunting, but it seems they boosted the hell out of bounty hunting. My first RES was mostly Eagles/Sideys, but I left and reentered and it was nonstop Anacondas, Pythons, Clippers and Dropships. This was probably an hour's worth of work. Oh and it was in public near one of the goal systems as well.
1: Just small fry. Sidewinders and eagles all-day.
2: A mix of small ships and big ships.
3: Just big ships. Condas, clippers, pythons, and dropships all-day. If anything smaller is present, it is probably the larger ship's escorts.
Just keep entering/exiting the RES until you get the big ship RES point (logging out the main menu and logging back in is faster). Bring energy weapons so that you don't need to leave to re-arm.

I just learned an important lesson. If you log off at a RES, do it above the asteroid belt. I just respawned in what was likely the middle of an asteroid and my FDL blew up and more than wiped my credits just that I just posted above :surprised:
1. Is the clipper sale open to everyone, or only people who participated in the CG?
2. How much would I be looking at to outfit a clipper decently/maxxed? I have a net worth of ~22m right now, about 12m sitting around burning a hole in my pocket with my vulture maxed out. I still need to get baron, but I'm parked in that empire CG in solo, soon to donate a whole lot of cash to the empire.
For trading, a fully outfitted clipper will cost ~30 million. That includes the cost of the basic hull at full price. With the discount it should cost you ~7 million less, so a full trading clipper should cost ~23 million or so. Also add an addition 2-3 million to account for insurance and spending money to purchase commodities.
For combat, a maxed out A rated clipper will cost in excess of 100 million credits. The grade A7 shield generator alone costs 50 million credits. Even then, the clipper's sheer size reduces the strength of that shield to one that is more fragile than the Vultures A5 shield.
I've seen some people make some interesting looking combat loadouts for the clipper. They mostly take advantage of the fact that the clipper is usually drowning in excess power while most combat ships like the vulture are operating with strict energy budgetes. So the clipper takes advantage of its power and splurge on tons of shield boosters and shield cell banks.
That's all really expensive though. I can't afford it yet, and I'm sticking with a Vulture for my combat roles for now rather than trying to set up a budget combat clipper. She is certainly fast and agile enough for combat though. The use of turrets or gimballed weapons on her large hardpoints is a must (they're located on the wingtips. Fixed weapons only converge at ludicrous distances).
So, sounds like the clipper is a good ship I can sink money into then. It's a lot easier for me to say "Alright, next upgrade in 3 mill, then I can work on X", etc.
Also, apparently, I got screwed at Mictlan by not realizing that the event would end abruptly at a certain point. Was supposed to have multiple days left >.>
The events last until the timer runs out or until the last tier is completed, whichever comes first. I haven't been taking part in the last few bounty hunting community goals, but my understanding is that Arissa is taking her brand new clipper fleet and raiding the crap out of every location identified in the intelligence that was gleaned from "A Light in the Dark."
So rather than another big event that lasts for days, we are having a flurry of back-to-back raids.

Kit out a mining barge, and bring some friends along as protection. You get mining bonuses and they get bait and a target rich environment.

When you arrive, check the price. If it is in the ballpark of 15 mil instead of 22 mil, then you're getting the sale price.
To check the price of a loadout, look here and then subtract ~7 million to account for the discount:
