Hi post. Looking for advice - I am reasonably new to the game, recently hit level 20 and straight to 24 with the armour that came with the expansion. I am really struggling to progress now. I have been doing bounties, strikes and patrols which are fun, but I don't feel I am getting anywhere - I still only have about 60 Vanguard marks, so can't get better armour and I am getting destroyed if I try to do the weeklies or even the first story mission for Crota's End. Is it just a case of gritting teeth and grinding until I can afford better armour so I can survive the harder strikes and grind quicker?
Also I am majanderson on PS3 if anyone is on - I suspect that part of my problem is that my friends list is non existent.

    Many thanks for any advice.

I think until you hit 26 where you can do roc strikes, your best bet is to chase public events in the cosmodrone to grind out marks, so you can buy legendary armor. If you're into PvP you can grind out marks there as well.

Yeah you'll need to grind somewhat but you only need 75 vanguard marks to buy a legendary armour piece which should help. Strike playlists are the best bet, you'll also get plenty of engrams which could give you some good gear too

Also you could buy an exotic piece from Xur when you've got enough strange coins, but they're mostly from the weeklies... this is all far easier if you playing with other people, if there's ps3 people here or you could try destinylfg.net?

Yeah basically what people have said.

Public Events are far and a way the easiest way to cap your vanguard marks each week. You'll get a decent amount of ascendant materials doing it, and if you're working on bounties too you'll be getting your rep up.

Just keep in mind, particularly if this is your first character, you're not gonna hit 30+ tomorrow. It's gonna take a few weeks to get the marks and reputation you need to grab the Vanguard gear. But as you get each new piece, you'll get a bump in levels and it opens more things. You can hop in Roc as early as 24, I think, but it's kinda rough with blues, unless you get party members who can carry. However, it is your best bet for non-mark gear in PvE. You can get blues with light up to 21 from Roc and the occasional legendary engram (they're still pretty rare there), so you will hit a wall eventually, but you're probably not there yet.

And it's worth it to work on Eris's missions in the meantime. Yeah, they're tough if you're doing them at level, but the rewards...a 'free' 33 light pair of gauntlets and Murmor, which is an awesome Fusion Rifle. When I did them on my Titan they were really hard, but I managed to get some decent drops while doing them, along with just the other stuff I was doing each day (the occasional cryptarch and vanguard rep packages) I was leveling up smoothly so I was mostly keeping up with the mission levels.

As far as being on the PS3, yeah, use one of the lfg sites, destinylfg.net or .com and see if you can find some folks. I think most everyone here is either ps4 or XB1; though I (and likely others?) do have a PS3 copy also, so I think I can just get it updated and hop over there to help? If nothing else, I suppose, get ya through the Eris missions for some gear to kickstart you; or run some Rocs; I got another Tolands bounty on my Titan so he needs a bunch of strikes again anyway. :rotate:

EDIT: Also, since it's matchmaking now, just drop the level of the heroic weekly to something you can do (26 would be the highest at 24) and get in the queue. Both being low level and PS3 you'll probably be waiting a bit, but at least you'll get it done, get some coins, an engram, and probably a handful of potentially ok drops in the course of the mission.

    Anyone planning for raid today?

Not today, but I am planning a PS4 raid for tomorrow night (3/29/15) at 11pm Eastern Standard Time. Its a bit late to get started, I know, but the Walking Dead season finale's an hour and a half, so I'll be busy until 10:30pm with that. I'd like us to start jumping on at that time, and for everyone to be ready to start raiding at 11pm. So far, I have 3 in the lineup (me: a 31 Sunsinger Warlock; @bertinrow : a 31 Defender Titan; and a friend of mine from work, who plays a 30 Hunter).

We're kind of up in the air right now about whether to do Vault of Glass or Crota's End. We'd basically like to do VoG just to say we've done it. My friend from work has done about half of it, but has never finished it. Bert and I have never raided in Destiny at all, so its all fresh to us. He and I are mostly pushing to do Crota's End tomorrow night, because we're both 31 and the only way for us to cap out is to get the 36-Light gloves that drop in CE.

So, honestly, we can just put it to a vote for all I care. But we're definitely looking for 3 people who can raid tomorrow night. Please get hold of me if that's something you're interested in. You can message me here on the forums, or just add me on the PS4: my gamertag is "milk_ducks".

yeah especially in crucible, where the advantage of using an exotic primary is too good to resist.

of course you could always swap over to thunderlord when the heavies spawn.

for arcburn strikes it isnt as bad i find - I usually roll (whatever purple arc primary) + arc murmur + thunderlord.

seriously thunderlord critting for 2500+ per hit (!) with a burn is fucking amazing. For example in the Sepiks prime strike, that initial part with all the captains, thunderlord just rips them apart.

Thunderlord has a subtle ability that might go unnoticed for some, it seems to have a chance to make enemies blow up in an arc explosion on precision shot kills, which isnt mentioned at all on the gun itself.

Possibly, the weird thing is that its not mentioned at all - Thunderlord special "Lightning Rounds: This weapon fires faster and more accurately the longer the trigger is held."

I haven't been reading the forums for several months now, but has anyone been soloing Crota's End? I can get up to Ir Yut with my hunter, but I'm having a hard time beating the timer.

Basically, I'm not sure about the kill order for wizards and shriekers. Is the Liturgy on a timer, or does it start early once the shriekers go down? I'm trying to quickly down one side, rotate, kill wiz & shrieker, clean up that side (left looking back at spawn from Crota's spot), and then going in for Ir Yut, but I just can't seem to do it fast enough.

You have about 3 minutes to clear out Ir Yut and it starts as soon as you run through the doors. Once she starts her liturgy, you have 30 seconds to kill her.

That was part of my frustration. I haven't really played Destiny in a couple of months and I burned down all my synths trying to beat Crota when the raid came out. It was at the point where having Gjallarhorn meant having to farm glimmer to buy synths for more attempts because no one knew the heavy ammo glitch yet. Other parts of the raid are easy to work on as many times as needed, but this one is limited by how many synths I'm willing to burn. It sucks using one only to hit the Liturgy too early for me to down Ir Yut.

Oh well. Maybe I'll just work on trying to solo Crota and then figure out Ir Yut later if I think I can piece the whole thing together.

You have about 3 minutes to clear out Ir Yut and it starts as soon as you run through the doors. Once she starts her liturgy, you have 30 seconds to kill her.

That's about what I thought. I guess I need to shave about 15 seconds off my wizard/shrieker kill time then.

Pretty sure no one can clear Ir Yut solo without heavy ammo snyths.

Honestly, if you're on prior-gen console I don't see how you can make it happen. The ammo synth loading screen delay is gonna wreck your attempts.

Although I guess it's only one time you've gotta make it through that, so maybe it works.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I have enough marks for some leg armour now, but not quite the rep to get to level 2. It amazes me how many things this game doesn't tell you - I had no idea I could alter the level of a mission before, so I think a weekly strike at 26 is going to be on the cards now.
    Thanks one and all

That is awesome. I love watching players with insane skill and innovative strategies absolutely wreck NM Crota.

Don't think I told this on here yet. My PSN name is just my name because when I first registered it forever ago, I thought you could change it, which you can't. I was in the Tower buying/selling/decrypting and I get an message from a random. "hey I saw your name, do you live in *my city* and know *insert mutual friend*". I was surprised and replied saying "ya, who's this". Turns out I have a acquaintance IRL who's had Destiny since launch; has a 32 and two 31's (I've only had it since Christmas) and we on accidentally got matched together in the tower?! Guess it's not THAT weird as we live both in the Pacific NorthWest but lucky.

What's funnier is that I used to post all up and down this place back in the fall, and I added pretty much everyone from the PA Roster spreadsheet before you put your name on it :p

I've noticed that the tower is regionalized in some way. I often see names with local area codes, references to football teams, etc.

I surprises me how often people are surprised by this.

I imagine a lot of areas just don't have easily recognized regional tropes, or at least, a lot people don't recognize them. I noticed it pretty quickly with stuff like '803ClemsonDude'.
Ha! Even when the tower is regionalized, when you live in a tiny country as Belgium (like I do) I can see by the different names and flavors of usernames/clan names, where they're from:
    - oh, KnuffelBeertje, da's Hugging Bear in Dutch, so the Netherlands or the North of Belgium (Flanders)
    - ah, the clan is called Les Grenouilles Vertes, that's the Green Frogs, so I guess they're from France or the South of Belgium (Wallony) or so.
    - ACupOfTea is probably British
    - ApfelStrudel, my guess is on Germany
    - Sven-DK, I guess he Danish instead of a Death Knight
    - and so on

(these names are invented, though I have met many similar names, but you get the idea).

So that is what happens when you join my fireteam for Iron Bannering, you might get matched up against a bunch of Europeans

(And sadly, most of the time, if anyone has Weed or Blow in their username, they're mostly American :eh: ; Europeans don't seem to boast about that...)

I can always tell because I live in Austin, TX and lots of Gamertags in the tower have 'ATX', 'UT', '512' or 'Cowboy' in the name somewhere.
