Certainly don't just extract a legendary for the hell of it, you ought to have something better to put in it's place, namely a set item or another legendary with better rolls. Or if your class has a non-standard 6 pc like tal'rasha, save your best versions of things like taskers, cindercoat, etc.
The main exception to cubing is offhands. Shields, sources, mojos, quivers, and even 1 handed barb/monk weapons. You are almost universally better off just wearing these, especially in the case of dual wielding with a cubed 2h.
The main people whose stash the cube is going to help are the collectors that just want to have access to every legendary affix, whether it's part of a real build or not. In reality the large majority of legendaries aren't viable choices for the Cube (compared to a Furnace etc), but it's still fun to collect them. If you get a legendary that's really awesomely rolled though it's still worth holding onto it.

Yeah but the problem is that like, half the legendary pool is rare drops. You won't see them again for weeks or even months of dedicated farming, so you have to hold on to it because they update the game enough that it may become viable in the future. There are people who have never been able to play particular builds because the cycle in which those builds were viable, they didn't get the right drops.

Rare stuff like SMK, Krider, etc. are ideal targets for reforging instead, until you have extras. As much as Blizzard says they love creating hard decisions, I'm sure they're relishing stuff like the SMK/DoD dilemma.
The cube is a boon for the weaker build items like RoRG and ObZod, or fun/flavor items like Leoric's crown and Goldwrap. Stuff like that can safely be extracted.

Yep there are always going to be those white whale items that you just never ever find due to bad RNG, maybe they'll come up with a fix for that at some point. In 2.3 though you do have both Kadala and rare -> legendary upgrades, so the odds are better if you target one slot. The requirement for the upgrade is just regular crafting materials.
It's a basic whirlwind build, and I only recently completed the Wrath of the Wastes set. that got me from Grift 20 to Grift 30, but I think my current limit will be around 32 or so. I'm current improving my gems. I got the lightning gem to 25, and am now levelling the poison and bleed gems.
Any quick tips, apart from 'keep running Grifts' ?
I would level a bane of the trapped gem to use instead of the lightning one if you want to advance into higher grifts. its a multiplicative damage boost and scales very well. also taeguk over poison.
My Barb is a template for most BK WW builds. This is what you should aim for, but you can change a few things around, like the amulet can be a hellfire amulet. The Obsidian ring and Taeguk is there to reduce cooldown on your skills. The Bane of the Trapped gem is there for increased damage; when you increase it to 25, it procs its own control impairing effect. If you go with this build though, note that you need a LOT of cooldown reduction. More than 50% is decent.

You can only get obsidian ring on seasons right now m vickers, but it'll get rolled over next week after the patch to non-seasons
Yeah, but that will help his build immensely after he does get one.
You could also go with a mixture of IK and Wastes, but you would need to get an IK Boulder Breaker, something not that common. You'd also need a Ring of Grandeur, but that's not that hard to get nowadays. Cooldown isn't a problem though, because the IK set just makes Berserker's cooldown almost nonexistent.

Yeah the 3 gems you want are:
Bane of the Trapped
Pain Enhancer
Taeguk
Trapped is basically a universal gem, so you'll want to level that anyway. Lightning is decent for early Grifts but you've definitely hit the limit in terms of wanting to switch over to high-level BiS gems instead.
on that note, did they make obsidian ring rarer after the rework?
i never found one this season at all
You're likely just on the bad side of RNG gonna RNG. I'm in a similar boat with the reworked Crusader phalanx ring that doubles phalanx minion duration. Yet to see one since it's update patch but that ring isn't that rare. Or Eberli Charo. Last week I got my first one, then my first four, within fifteen minutes of each other after going over 500 hours on Sader since RoS release and never having that super common shield drop.
Even if obsidian was made rarer I don't think it was made Furnace, SNK, Calamity, etc. 1% drop rate rare. I'll be just shy of 100 hours on my WD this season when it ends and I've found obsidians around the same rate as any other ring. Helping a friend gear up and work on his season 3 portrait and banner he's had a similar drop rate with them, already finding one to wear and one to cube.

It's not desirable to use the reduce damage from elements/75% less damage under 50% life gem?

Super excited for this patch. Haven't played in a while but I've gotten in some rifts recently just to clear the rust off. Any item look like it will be the new Mortick's Bracer? Very glad I was able to grab one of those while they were live.

The Seismic Slam doing 300-400% increased damage to the first (I forget how many) enemies it hits bracer and Call of the Ancients gain Ancients' Fury shoulders look pretty good, especially with the large buff to IK6 coming in the patch.

Thanks for the tips -I had Trapped and Taeguk in my Stash, so I'l start levelling them soon. I'll start gambling for a new ring, too, as I could do with replacing Broken Promises. I don't need the perk, but it's my best ring in terms of damage.
I can't wait for the patch - I have the Amulet that absorbs cold damage going unused, so that's going to be the first thing in the cube.
Hmph, like they should buff IK6 when clearly they should have buffed Akkhan instead. That set is basically DEAD.
Mind you 2 piece is still +500 strength? And now with ancient pieces, 500 strength is just laughable. WD gets a whole new set and a tweaked set. Crusaders get one new set (the most boring playstyle next to fear lock doc, complete with stutter stepping action) and no fixes to older sets.
Just to sweeten the patch they also make Invoker set only drop for crusaders. Single handily destroyed my favorite spec (zDPS crusader) and making me have to scream and shout barb style now. Crusaders are so slow in Torment X. They can't keep up at all with EP monk and Chicken WD.
I'm honestly surprised they didn't revisit akkhan this patch
maybe 2.4 (along with the shadow set, invoker, and whatever else is still lingering in obscurity)
Might of the Earth desperately needs some love too. Whether they want to rework it into a six piece set, which seems to be where they're headed with everything anyway, or add more mandatory legendary items like Lut Socks to make it viable again.

except for no seasonal characters, they've been patching in all other content for ps4/xbone versions same as the patches for PC.
Check this swag out.
Worth it? Hell yes!
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
I'm probably going to cube mine because even though it is ancient it isn't an ideal roll.
Same goes for my ancient Wand of Woh - the only Woh I've ever seen. Non ideal roll = cubing it
