so assault proton torpedoes. If I get a crit while using them per the card, do I deal the face up damage even if they have shields left?

    Yes.

The crit roll does 1 damage by itself and then you deal a face up card to them from the APT trigger.

Alright that's what I thought. That's a pretty brutal card, being able to cut through shields like that.

So I have only gotten to play this a couple times but I have every expansion, and there's a store running a little tourny here soon.

Is there any sort of general tips to building a fleet that can help me construct something decent?

Don't underestimate squadrons. I like to run a few 'anti-squadron' guys (A-Wings) and a couple bombers that just stick to the rear arc of an enemy capital ship. Then I round it out with a few middle squadrons (X-Wings).

From capital ships I like one option as a support / squadron activator and then a bruiser.

Oh, read your scenario cards. That can really screw things up depending on which one changes the game.

It seems there can be something said for shooting low points wise and aiming to get initiative, so you can stack the events the way you want them.

Depends on the list. Going first shouldn't be underestimated. Having a perfect shot only for your opponent to fly out of it before you can activate again can happen a lot. Having lots of ships can ease this, as you can put multiple ships in danger at once, but if you're running a lower number of ships, then going first can be big.

Especially dangerous is if your opponent both has more ships than you and has initiative. Then they can effectively have a ship go twice in a row, which is almost never something you want to happen.

Are there any youtube channels you guys like for video battle reports of Armada?

I've found lots of good X-Wing ones but Armada seems trickier to find.

Alright this is the fleet I ended up with based on the ships I have.

Empire Fleet (375 of 400 pts)
    Commander: Admiral Motti (24 pts)
    Flagship: (144 pts)
    • Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer(120 pts)
    • Relentless (3 pts)
    • Intel Officer (7 pts)
    • Gunnery Team (7 pts)
    • Electronic Counter Measures (7 pts)
    Fleet Ship 1: (57 pts)
    • Raider I-Class Corvette(44 pts)
    • Instigator (4 pts)
    • Ordnance Experts (4 pts)
    • Assault Proton Torpedoes (5 pts)
    Fleet Ship 2: (53 pts)
    • Raider I-Class Corvette(44 pts)
    • Ordnance Experts (4 pts)
    • Assault Proton Torpedoes (5 pts)
    Squadrons (121 of 134 pts):
    • 1x Darth Vader Tie Advanced Squadron (21 pts)
    • 1x Howlrunner Tie Fighter Squadron (16 pts)
    • 7x Tie Fighter Squadron (56 pts)
    • 1x Tie Advanced Squadron (12 pts)
    • 1x Aggressor Assault Fighter (16 pts)
Objectives: Opening Salvo , Fire Lanes , Intel Sweep

Weird, it doesn't total the fleet plus the commander. Anyways, sitting at 399 points.

I like that list a lot. Don't over-extend the corvettes and make sure your Imperial Class Star Destroyer moves slow enough to keep as much of the enemy in its fire arcs so you get multiple attacks from the front with your Gunnery support.

I might drop the standard Tie Fighters to pick up 2 Tie Interceptors, but that's personal preference.

EDIT: Drop the number of standard TIE Fighters I mean. I like running a named squadron with a second same type squadron to run cover for the named guy - just like you did with Vader and his support TIE Advanced.

I feel maybe that list has an awful lot of anti squadron stuff without much gained from doing it? Subbing out some of the TIE's for bombers/Rhymer's would give you a threat that means you'd gain more when the enemy squadrons inevitably die to 11 squadrons and 2 Raiders.

  • Options
    DeoDeo Registered User regular
Rhymer is good with TIEs just because it lets them fire on ships at medium range, which can make them useful even without squadron commands. TIEs can do some good damage to ships when they're focusing fire.

Also, fun setup is Superior positions with lots of TIES, as people aren't afraid of that card and will often pick it , but the swarm excels at scoring the objective.

    I got owned hard.

Between my squadrons rolling nothing and my buddy rolling 3 or more damage more often than not, the ties fell early and often. Then I couldn't get the ISD in medium range to really unload.

    MC80, MC30, Nebulon, 4 X-wing with Wedge and 2 A-wings with their pilot.

My trouble right now was just trying to get into close range with my ships without getting popped by the MC80. We had to call it at the end of round 5, ran out of time. I had lost both Raiders and 7 Ties, no damage on the ISD. All his stuff had 2-3 damage, mostly because he kept running into himself (one of the raiders had 1 health left, then he ran it down with the MC80. Doh). We had the objective where player 1 has to completely deploy before player 2, and then damage on rear quarters are worth victory points. He was able to set himself up well to present his broadsides to me.

I'm thinking with that many squadrons I need ships that can activate them effectively. Being able to move and attack first would have been huge.

I wonder if FFG is going to release a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer

Probably not, because it would be too big (unless they're planning on introducing huge ships) :(

Played Armada again today! I got to try out double ISD with some TIE and raider support.

A couple of shots from today's Armada Battle:

Behold, the ridiculous amount of money we've spent on this game:

    http://i.imgur.com/l6dZg2a.jpg

We played hyperspace assault, here's what things looked like when the Rebels first jumped in:

    http://i.imgur.com/9htWtBL.jpg

Annnnd here's what things looked like two turns later (the nebulon is out of play):

    http://i.imgur.com/nwta8Wv.jpg

It turns out that getting in the front arc of two impstars with tractor beams is a bad idea

By that point in time, his MC30 was entirely devoid of shields, was completely dead in the water at 0 speed (due to crits) and about 1 or two damage from dying. We called it there.

Playing in my first tournament on Saturday.

Nervous but excited. I've only played twice and I've never played an "official" game with the exact right size space and rules and such.

My dad and I played a full game over the weekend. It took a while since it was the first full point game and we are still new but we had fun! We might go on in on Armada over X-Wing. While we like X-Wing a lot, there is so much cool stuff to get that it is daunting. As it is we already almost have at least one of every Armada ship.

I kinda want to run a list with carriers and 12 Y-Wing Squadrons. However I don't want to have to buy five more of the rebel fighter sets to get enough Y-Wings!

    They are so cool though!

With half the fire power of a Executor?

Played my first game and a half of this with @Nax yesterday. I won the "learning" setup by wiping out all his TIE fighter squads, then we started playing a fuller game with 180 points.

I enjoyed it a lot (though I will probably mostly stick to xwing because I have more people to play with), and the little I played yesterday is super dangerous for my wallet.

I am playing again against my usual opponent and I've been contemplating this list if anyone wants to give me some pointers.
    Faction: Galactic Empire
    Points: 395/400

    Commander: Admiral Screed

    Assault Objective: Precision Strike
    Defense Objective: Contested Outpost
    Navigation Objective: Minefields

Gladiator I-Class Star Destroyer (56 points)
    - Intel Officer ( 7 points)
    - Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
    - Engine Techs ( 8 points)
    - Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
    [ flagship ] Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer (120 points)
    - Admiral Screed ( 26 points)
    - Captain Needa ( 2 points)
    - Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
    - Expanded Hangar Bay ( 5 points)
    - Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
    - XI7 Turbolasers ( 6 points)
    1 Dengar ( 20 points)
    1 Firespray-31 ( 18 points)
    4 TIE Advanced Squadrons ( 48 points)
    3 TIE Bomber Squadrons ( 27 points)
    1 Major Rhymer ( 16 points)

My major issues are: do I want Screed or Vader? and should I drop some upgrades and possibly fighters to make room for a Raider? I'm thinking the Raider could just be useful as a little more damage and maybe it could hover around the ISD as an escort.

Just some general thoughts skimming your list:

I think the Gladiator I, with all its black die, really wants the Demolisher title on it, I'd consider freeing up points for it.

On the Imperial II, you took Needa but then you didn't go for the Turbolaser Reroute Circuits, which strikes me as a good pairing if you are going for the long range firepower approach.

It's my understanding that Vader is better than Screed unless you have a lot of critical effects in your list, and right now you currently have 1. I'd say get more critical effects in your list or switch to Vader.

Personally I'd look into freeing up points by cutting down on your squadrons some, 4 advances is probably too many points. Look into a couple of them backed up by regular ties, maybe howlrunner.

If you want to stick with screed and want a Raider you could try a Raider II with Overload pulse and the Avenger title on your Imperial II, but I'm not sure if that's a combo that looks better on paper than in practice.

    AnteCantelopeAnteCantelope Registered User regular
Screed only affects one dice, so he's best with smaller dice pools. Using Screed on the front arc of an ISD barely makes a difference. Vader can reroll a bunch, which makes him more valuable on larger dice pools. Screed also works best on black dice, with their hit/crit face.

I agree with Inquisitor about adding Demolisher. I think Gladiators are generally quite weak, but Demolisher is fearsome.

If you want a Raider I'd probably recommend dropping to 2 Advanced, and have the Raider escort the fighters.

I'd like to try a 2xISD list, but otherwise I don't think only 2 ships is a good idea. As it currently is, I feel your Gladiator will die early leaving only an ISD, and even with all those Advanced around, Dengar can't make all enemy squadrons heavy, so a lot of your bombers will be tied up. Your squadrons need some more punch, and your fleet needs some more hull.

  • Options
ChaosHatChaosHat Hop, hop, hop, HA! Trick of the lightRegistered User regular
Demolisher is a good catch. I actually thought I had already put it in so I probably would have played with it and basically cheated (we don't bother to get the cards out, we just refer to the lists on our ipads).

I figured Vader was the better call but I was trying to go cheap on the commander.

I'll probably add the Raider in. I was a bit concerned about the number of activations. He's probably going to run a few rebel ships and it would be nice to have a little more control over the timing and such.
