(CNN) -- A lone gunman is dead after police said he killed at least 21 people Monday during twin shootings on the Virginia Tech campus -- the worst school shooting incident in U.S. history.
"Some victims were shot in a classroom," university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said during a news conference in Blacksburg.
Police believe there was only one gunman, Flinchum said.
"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)
The shootings mark the deadliest school shooting incident in U.S. history, topping attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966.
The Associated Press quoted officials saying more than 20 people were wounded. A hospital spokeswoman told AP that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.
This morning there was a pretty horrific shooting at Virginia Tech, they are already calling it the one, if not the worst College shooting in our history. Not all that much is known yet, but this is also the second shooting that has happened at Tech in a year. Last year there was an escaped mental patient that shot hospital workers in the tech area and hid on campus.
What do you think can be done to prevent tragedy like this, if anything can be done, since apparently not enough has been done since Columbine. Are troubled students getting attention and concern from professors? Are people too afraid to report to authorities when someone seems like they could possibly do something like this?
I think it's hard to prescribe ways to prevent these sorts of things when we don't know what really happened to begin with.

Calling it "The worst in history" seems odd. Have there really been all that many college shootings to warrant comparison?
I don't know that anything can really be done to prevent some screwed up person from going in to a building and shooting people short of a lockdown situation.
What can be done? Nothing, whether we have a right to own firearms or not, because it's not like making them illegal suddenly makes all the guns magically disappear in a puff of wishful thinking.
Fixed.

What can be done? Nothing, so long as we insist on having a right to firearms.
Not many of the people who commit these atrocities use legally obtained firearms.
Edit: I'm really hoping this doesn't become another gun control debate for the next 10 pages. Personally, I'm waiting to see if they can determine whether this guy was a student and figure out what his motives were, because I think that's more important in analyzing these sorts of situations. The BBC has a timeline of US school shootings:
What can be done? Nothing, so long as we insist on having a right to firearms.
Because all criminals buy thier guns over the counter.
This has nothing to do with gun rights and more to do with a very very disturbed individual whom unfortunately no one noticed that they obviously needed some serious help. I feel very sorry for everyone affected by this.
The shooter apparently is dead, some reports are saying it was an asian male using a handgun. Some reports are also saying there were 2 gunmen but it seems certain that there were 2 seperate shootings in different areas of the campus.
Agreed not a lot can be done, unless you put security guards every 5 feet in any populated area 24/7. Which seems kinda hard... But should we do nothing? Surely in the future steps will be made to prevent rampages on campuses...
Man, I woke up a 3 hours ago and heard on the local news that one person was dead and something like 10 had been wounded. Then they held that press conference and told everyone that 22 were dead, including the gunman.
I had a class at McBryde this morning. Good thing I slept in.
Why fuck does cnn have a picture of a bloody student being carried away on their front page? And why does fox news have the same picture fucking SUPERSIZED?

Yes, I think the issue of prevention transcends issues of gun laws unfortunately, which is a much more concrete issue.
Apparently the suspect was a young Asian American male, he had 2 pistols and went from classroom to classroom seemingly premeditated. He also apparently chained doors closed so that people would have a harder time leaving... Pretty sick. This guy probably needed some help, so much so that sticter gun laws probably wouldnt prevent him from hurting people...

Man, if I hadn't decided to blow off my Masters' program in order to make a little money, I'd have been there right now.
I go to Virginia Tech, but I live off campus. I had stayed up late last night doing homework, and decided not to go to my 10am class. My 10am class was in Norris Hall, the building where the shootings took place at 10am. It’s also been mentioned on the news, that part of the shooting might have taken place in my classroom but hasn’t been confirmed. Its strange how life works like this so I just thank God that I’m safe. I haven't read through this thread, but please have us in your thoughts and prayers.

Yeah, instituting some form of gun control won't solve the problem right away. It will only help reduce it in the long term. Therefore, it's clearly not worth considering seriously and must be derided by comparing it to magic.
In related news, all medical research that doesn't yield a one-shot, all-purpose universal cure within the next 10 minutes should be ended immediately.
And tonight on O'Reilly: why do people bother teaching their babies to talk, knowing that it will take them years to learn?

Which part of the school would you have been in? Anywhere near the shootings?
I'm not certain. I was working a Masters in EE in a satellite campus, and was in the process of transferring to the main campus when I met Frankie and decided I really should get a job rather than dig myself deeper into debt.

People still get shot in places where guns have been outlawed for decades. The simple reality of the situation is that for any ban, a black market will form. The people that do this kind of crap will get guns, gun laws or not.

If I had gone to class, I might be dead now.
Im really glad you are ok, and I hope no one you know closely was hurt today... I feel really really terrible the friends and family of those that were killed today. I hope the number of those killed stays at 22 or 23. It was hard to take it when the number shot from 1 victim to 10 to 20...

Welcome to the new millenium. It's not news, it's nENTERTAINMENTws.
Would you prefer them to not show what happened? It's the fucking news and I doubt any normal person is entertained by the prospect of a dead body. For God's sakes some of the most important photographs of the last century have been of some pretty horrific things.

The problem is that they aren't going to report it and move on. This is the news for the next 6 months.

I'll say it again, this isn't a gun control issue. If you want to talk gun control, start another thread and I'd be happy to rip you up.
The thing is, you can't necessarily do a lot to prevent this with a top-down program. Someone that crazy is going to get his hands on a gun somehow.
Better societal mental health is the only solution in the long run, but we as a people are not yet talking about what that is or how to achieve it. In fact, the cultural dialogue is that the way people are right now in the U.S. is the default state of man, despite massive historical evidence to the contrary.
From what I understand, the first set of shootings didn't lead to the school being shut down. WTF.
The first one was in a dorm a ways away from the second incident. Only one person was killed, and they were investigating that when the 2nd happened. Supposedly they were only an hour and 30 minutes apart or so.

Some of these I've not heard of, and it'd be nice to have a perpetrator identification/motive for each.
Oh, and have they ID'd the killer yet?

It's really fucking with me to think of that place as the scene of a shooting. It's pretty damn peaceful up there.
Sounds like a good slogan. How long until someone blames video games?

Then again, details aren't exactly pouring in so far, so I could be way off.
You are.
