She does give up with a little grouching on certain issues, but the food is a strong one with her... I usually end up leaving it because it’s ultimately not harmful (except to my sanity!).

For example, she has expressed concerns about certain vaccinations and has quoted bunk sites like Natural News, and I explained why those sites are awful, and she didn’t wholly agree but she did stop linking me to them.

My mother in law is coming to make cookies on Saturday night. A tradition my beloved spouse remembers and likes. Our relationship with her parents has been rocky at best. It has gotten better between those two recently, but I am still nervous something shitty will happen. I have long been ok with cutting shitty people out of my life, but my beloved spouse struggles with doing the same. I am really hoping this ends up working out well. My beloved had cut out her side entirely for a while but has let my mother in law back in on a limited basis as long as she can respect our wishes.

My mother in law has seemed willing to play by the rules so far, but neither of us are entirely certain how long that will last. My sister in law and father in law are more or less permanently ejected from our lives for being supremely shitty people.y mother in law doesn't like that fact, but has so far respected it. Here is to hoping she makes it through the holidays without trying anything stupid.

It really grinds my gears because their parents were the generations who suffered the hardest because of those communicable diseases and were like "YES PLEASE LETS BASICALLY PUT THIS IN EVERYTHING POSSIBLE" because getting whooping cough and polio was fucking frightening back then.

Then, having grown up in a generation of people who never had a chance to get sick, they decide it probably wasn't as big of a deal and suffer their children through it.

That's literally how my cousin lost custody of her son. Well, OK, there were a lot of reasons, but the anti-vaccine thing was the final nail in the coffin.

The kid got scratched all the hell up by a big gnarly swamp raccoon, and her husband refused to allow Medicine to happen out of the fear that some of it might be the Evil Medicine he'd been warned about as part of this... fucking insane "support group" for white-as-hell people who claimed to have native american ancestry, but couldn't provide any actual evidence or get recognized by any real tribes. So they just hung around each other in their Wolf Moon T-Shirts making dream catcher belt buckles and sharing theories about how they were all the reincarnations of a group from Wounded Knee and they had been destined to reunite in the Delray Beach library conference room on Tuesday nights, under the guidance of a gentleman who has been described to me as "the most Swedish motherfucker you ever saw evaporate in strong sunlight". So my 80+ year old grandma had to literally grab the kid while his dad was in the bathroom and drive to the hospital. After that my Aunt finally started up the legal proceedings to become his primary guardian, and the kid seems to be growing up all right now.

At least, that's the version of the story that eventually filtered to me through my mom, after passing through god only knows how many intermediary steps. And a generous helping of supporting details about the "Native Souls" Support Group from a friend who still lives in the area.

But I'm willing to believe it all, because Florida!

Realizing lately that I don't really trust or respect basically any of the moderators here. So, good luck with life, friends! Hit me up on Twitter @DesertLeviathan

The fuzz arrested some suspected terrorist at 5:30 this morning, using a charge to blast the door down it seems? National news and everything.

Anyway my parents live a dozen doors down and my Dad texted me in a stroppy mood because armed police stopped him walking that way down the road to buy his morning paper and go for a brief coffee.

It's nice to see that in the face of terrorism, retired old farts retain their sense of vaguely self-satisfied grumpiness.

Fun times. My mom is cutting back on her expenses to line up with a fixed income lifestyle. So she was on the phone with both FiOS and Comcast to get a better deal for her TV/Internet service. She ended up going with Comcast (yeah I know, but she doesn't really have the option to vote with her dollars), but this means she will have to cancel her FiOS service. Which is fine since her contract with FiOS runs out this week anyway.

It also cancels her landline phone; which is used by her security system. And she just renewed with the security company (for a year, back in August). They told her that it would cost $198 to convert the system to cellular, AND cost an additional $7 per month; but they would waive the $198 charge if she signed a new 2-year agreement. (Both of these charges are complete bullshit)

I had her try to negotiate with Comcast to get the phone service tossed in at no or minimum charge, but they weren't budging. So we are going to wait and see how the security company reacts when her phone line gets shut off.

If I knew she was going to renew back in August, I would have worked with her back then. We have Simplisafe and while the cash outlay for equipment was a bit heavy up front, the reduced cost on monitoring has paid it back. Also, I cannot praise their monitoring highly enough. We have had nothing but good experiences with them.

So long story short, there's a decent chance she will have to buy herself out of the security company contract, AND we will have to work out how she can afford paying for the hardware to set up a Simplisafe system later. (Yes, I know about the bundles that are currently on sale)

At the risk of turning into “that cancer guy”, I found out last night after our family Christmas get-together that my dad has stage IV colon cancer and is only expected to live another year, max. He’s 58 years old.

I’m having very conflicted feelings right now, as I sit in a Dallas restaurant just before heading over to see him for the first time in at least 10 years. The last time I saw him in person was at my sister’s wedding, and he didn’t even look at me, much less speak to me. He was an abusive asshole when I was growing up. Emotionally and physically, never sexually. He would hit me until I bled, so one time I hid all the things he usually beat me with. So he went out into the garage and made a 2x4 beating stick with air holes so there would be no wind resistance. He ended up breaking it over my back and making me stay home from school for a month so nobody would see the marks he left.

Nowadays he’s still an asshole, although he doesn’t hit me anymore, obviously. He’s a prosperity gospel enthusiast (makes sense since he’s a rich fuck), and he remarried and went all-in on his new family, like his old one never existed. Like he gets a do-over after fucking us all up so badly. I would be surprised if any of his kids were in his will, he most likely will give everything to his new wife.

Still, I had trouble sleeping last night. And I made the decision to go see him relatively easily, even though I had to hear the news secondhand.

I’m not happy that he’ll be gone soon, and I’m also not happy to know this puts me at an even greater risk of getting a deadly cancer. My last bout with it was dealt with fairly quickly, since we caught it early. It makes me nervous. But mostly I don’t know if I’m ready to live in a world without him, which is bizarre because we don’t speak.

    Fuck.

  • joshofalltradesjoshofalltrades Class Traitor Smoke-filled roomRegistered User regular
Well I saw him and he’s weak and feeble but it went better than I expected for a meeting that hasn’t occurred in a decade.

You're a good person, Josh. I know this because I know you, how you think and how you act and how hard you work to do the right thing. Even though we only have the chance to get together once a year these days, I'm desperately proud to count you as a friend.

Don't ever think I wouldn't lie down in traffic for you; I would, and I'd count the cost as a small price to pay to keep you and yours safe.

(Now, enough with all this mushy stuff, you still owe me a beer, numbnuts.)

My family bemoaned my "never replying to text messages" this xmas

and I responded "yeah I usually toss my phone down to charge when I get home and never touch it until the next day"

my brother who also works in IT said, "how can you be in IT and not always have your phone handy?"

I said, "I'm not really addicted to my phone like you guys all are, I can put it down and go do other shit for a few hours and not give a crap"

I distinctly remember them being annoying as I was a kid because I was a nerdy kid teaching myself computer skills and programming and "being addicted to the computer" and I also remember my one brother preventing my parents from buying me a C++ book for xmas when I was like 14ish saying "I'd destroy the computer" whatever that means. They were always trying so hard to stop me from playing video games and toying with the computer. Also I took apart a lot of shit just to see how it works and tried to put it back together. Usually not successfully but I got better at it.

I'm still not really sure why it bothered them so much... I guess because I didn't do shit like go to school pep rallies and school dances. But lol I am stupidly shy so of course I was not going to do those things.

I realize this isn't on the same level as a lot of the stuff you guys deal with with your families but I just found it amusing and wanted to share it.

@bowen curiosity about how things worked is what ultimately lead me into mechanical engineering, and eventual PC building. I'm looking to learn some programming in the near future, as well. Good on you.

Yeah it absolutely did not stop me that's for sure.

I had already learned BASIC at that point, so I went online and printed out as many C++ tutorials as I could find and worked my way through them at 14ish.

I sometimes wonder where I'd be if I had had that head start with a real book.

My sister is being a dick to her ex husband about custody of her dog. She claims it's ok because he was a dick first about other things.

I told her that using a pet as a proxy for revenge is fucked up and gross and unfair, but she keeps forwarding me the email chains between the two of them as though she expects me to take her side. It's got nothing to do with me but it's stressing me the fuck out - I don't need my face rubbed in this garbage and I feel horrible for the dog.

so my dad can no longer walk thanks to the tumors on his spine

my brother who has a martyr complex was just told the other day

the last time he was in town his last words to me were: "see you at his(dad's) funeral" (this was before the cancer diagnosis i believe.)

somehow he came to the conclusion that he needed to come move down here temporarily despite still holding onto to his accusations that his upbringing was abusive.

fortunately after talking to my parents he was convinced that he didn't need to do that, so he can focus on being a martyr for some other situation he has forced himself into the center of

i am still coming to terms with the fact that all i can do now is try to make dad's last days/weeks/months whatever we have comforting, and i just can't deal with my brother's bullshit and i don't feel i have the right to tell him to fuck off
so now i'm just so exhausted from family stuff and i don't have the energy to spend with my dad and that makes me feel like shit
