I added some fire damage stuff to my Ludwig and it ruined the damage. It took so many more swings to kill stuff.
Turning a pure-physical weapon into Fire/Arcane/Bolt through Gems transfers the weapon to Arcane scaling entirely and transforms the entire weapon to elemental damage. They're for heavy Arcane specs.
(Note: on BoM/BB it'll just add the elemental damage without changing the Physical/Arcane scaling but the gems aren't worth it.)
Note that Ludwig has the best Arcane scaling for a 40/50 Arcane build in the game thanks to A scaling and high base damage, once you transform it into an elemental weapon.
Also note that it's a greatsword.
Named after Ludwig van Beethoven.
Who had a very famous song Moonlight Sonata.
Moonlight Greatsword.
That is part of why I've been using it.
Dungeons are so frustrating sometimes. The damn bell ringing women make it so dumb sometimes. A constant stream of spiders keep spawning. She has to be spawning three at a time or there are three bell ringers. I can't even clear the rooms because the spiders keep coming and I have no chance to attack the not glowing red enemies.

What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable? ~ Mario Novak
I never fear death or dyin', I only fear never trying.
Even with elemental gems in them, its not worth scaling arcane for weapons period. The spells are very shit, the scaling is okay, but you only get 3 options for damage. Fire/Bolt/Arcane damage. If you have 15 arcane and a ludwigs with full str/skill you get physical, bolt paper, fire paper, arcane buff. Some of the hardest fights in the game are super resistant to the arcane specs, and you don't have pure physical damage to fall back on.
Going full arcane is the worst character I made, i felt more powerful with skill/blood at 70 than I did with full arcane at 120. The spells are shit, quicksilverbullet hungry, and usable in maybe 2-3 places. Just.. Just never go full arcane. Never.

If you go full arcane you probably should be good at parrying. Gotta run the runes for either health or bullets on visceral.

Wow, okay, Bloodstarved Beast in Ailing Loran doesn't fuck around. He finally has enough health and damage to be a serious threat.

Here's a pretty good article on the story and lore of Bloodborne. Note that most of this isn't really theory or anything, it's just a compiled and coherent retelling of all the stuff you learn throughout the game in fragments. I really enjoyed it. Sorry if it has been posted, I haven't caught up on the past couple pages.
I just killed the BSB and explored the Healing Church area that opened up, with a locked door at the top on the end. I thought this would be the next place for me to go but evidently I have to do some other stuff first before I can enter that door. I'm not really sure where to go next.
Also (BSB)
I decided to give jolly co-operation a try and got another player and Alfred, meaning I could pretty much wail on BSB's ass without worrying about drawing aggro. Fun!
Do you get enough Blood Stones throught out the game to keep two weapons leveled?
I recently got the Blades Of Mercy but sometimes the range of the Threaded Cane is super useful.
Definitely. I ended NG with a +9 and a +10 without any farming. I only found one capstone upgrade item (to +10) mind.
On the topic of farming, if you ever need a bunch of vials later on when the game becomes stingy, a run from Grand Bridge to Central Yharnam nets about 14 in a couple of minutes.
I've spent an hour trying to descend the pit in the Healing Church part (with all the cris crossing beams) and there's a point where you simply cannot see what's beneath you. I've been trying to get down here for over an hour.
*edit* lol I was reaching for a beer, accidentally nudged the stick and fell precisely onto a beam I couldn't see. Woop way round the Cathedral Ward gate discovered!

Without enemy drops, iric you will get enough to at least +10 one weapon and +9 another. You can get more items to +10 weapons in the hardest Chalice Dungeons and can farm the drops that get weapons from +7 to +9 from two optional areas through enemy drops.

Have you tried equipping a Torch? They actually work.

Torch didn't really help, but I got there in the end. Currently repeatedly smashing my head against the witches

late game you really shouldn't be farming for actual vials, its so much faster just to buy them. Heck, with them being cheap early on its probably faster to buy them throughout the whole game
Who is easier? The vicar or the witch? I have them both unlocked and I am trying to figure out who to tackle first.
The Witch, by far, seems easier to me. It's more of a "puzzle fight" than an actual "learn the monster and counter its attacks" fight. Once you figure out the trick (or have the trick spoiled for you) to the fight, it's possibly the easiest boss in the game.
Also all this blood vial farming is annoying me at this point. Is there better way? Should I just be buying them like @Beef Avenger suggested?

You can fill up your blood vials by buying them with about 5 minutes of farming. By your stage every enemy you kill will give you enough for a vial. Larger ones 3-4.
Also I know the 'trick' to the witches and they're still driving me nuts.

crows with dog heads making dog noises was way less weird than crows inexplicably making dog noises
That might have been one of the most satisfying levers I've pulled in any game ever.

Holy fuck I beat him. This son of a bitch is very much one of the hardest fights in the game.
I took a break. I came back with a clear head.
And then I Got Gud and killed his ass on my first new try.

Defiled chalice abhorrent beast is probably my least favorite fight in the game. Thankfully it can be totally cheesed using:

so many of the beams have collision solely to interfere with jumps, and so many don't have collision despite looking exactly like every other platform
