just finished the Blood Legacy quest. goddamn that whole thing was GRIM. I can't imagine it going any other way than how I did it, even if I'm doing another playthrough.
Wiped all that shit from the girl's mind and killed the uncle. Up until this point my guy hadn't really been a vigilante or a "murderer", I'd let everyone go or put them in prison, but I snapped his neck. It was kind of shocking how fast I did it, and I was like "Shit, should I have done that?" but I didn't reload because it was a genuine reaction.
You could wipe it from the girl's mind? How? All I could do was let her go and then have the uncle put her into the Sanitarium to be cured, plus adding the threat of violence if he tries anything ever again. The option to help her didn't even appear. It was let her go or break her neck right there.
Now I feel bad.
Yes, you either have to be a Cipher yourself or have Grieving Mother with you. They have that whole ability to mess with people's memories.
Wizards escalate into more than enough spells pretty quickly. I think by level 5 I was pretty much casting all the time.
I also found that few talents were really great for casters. I ended up with +interrupt and bloody slaughter. For a hard run 2 extra quick slots may be pretty good. Potions, food and scrolls are pretty cheap and powerful in this game.
So far (just got to the Gilded Vale) the backer NPC's soul-stories are about a million times better than what everyone seemed to be making out that they were. I was expecting a lot of memes and shit, so far it's just kind of random but still mostly fitting overall. Too bad they're loot pinatas! Soon as I get a full party there shall be a purge. But their stories aren't utter crap. So far.
Suppose the tombstone or whatever are still there to live up to my low expectations.
The backer NPCs weren't written by backers. They had very little say in them at all.
Essentially, backers were asked for a name, a race, a class, and some backstory/personality traits, and the stories were written based on that. That's why the writing is so consistent and fits within the world. You'll notice that some of the names are extremely silly...and a couple of the stories are ridiculous too later.
When I got to the backer "Storm Brightblade" I had to start killing. I don't worry about the tombstones because I actually have to walk over and click on those, and they're admitted to be fourth wall breaks.
Wait wait... so all the people with the yellow name boxes I can kill freely and take their loot?
It doesn't impact the story, but if other NPCs see you do it, you'll take a reputation hit.
I think it only matters if other yellow named NPCs see it.
There was once a lone yellow guy in an inn, I killed him in front of all these people and I don't think there was any sort of rep hit.
It's like the yellow guys exist in their own reality where they only exist to each other, so if you kill one in another's presence then that causes an issue, but there's no problem otherwise.
I think. Unless there was a special situation in that inn.

I'll take your word for it. I don't kill them in most of my games because of RP. On my Bleak Walker paladin I kill them and don't give a shit about the rep loss, so I haven't been paying attention to the particulars.
So on ciphers, I know the Antipathetic Field causes friendly fire. Does Ectoplasmic? I read that it didn't, but it seems like the beam should act the same between the two.
Bearing in mind that I have no prior experience with mac, would it be able to run PoE decently?
I'm running it on a 2014 Macbook Air with no issues. The Macbook Pro has more oomph under the hood, so you should be fine.
You might want to look into getting Windows running through Bootcamp at some point. That opens up all the Windows only games, and there are the occasional titles that just run better on Windows than Mac (not Pillars, which runs fine).
all backer npcs should be murdered in the most painful way for tempting me to read their shit regardless of loot and then smear their blood all over the backer memorials.
my favourite arsehole backer npc is i think in one of the houses of gilded vale (i think, will have to check) who doesnt understand how line breaks work and its just this huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge wall of nonense fanfic text that just makes my blood boil.
the gardener one is alright though.

Is there a merchant or keep addition that gives me gems? I'm getting to where I want to upgrade my gear to exceptional quality but it's going to require a lot of them.
I dunno if I'd call backer NPCs consistently written; they couldn't decide if they wanted to refer to them as "This X" or "he/she" during the writing, so it was unclear if they were generally supposed to be you seeing things the character had done in this life, or their past lives. I assume it's always supposed to be the latter, but it's much less clear than it could be.
Any word on new content, DLC or significant additions via patching? I've strayed away from the game thanks to Darks Souls 2 and Bloodborne, so I'm looking for an opening to jump back in.

I'm pretty sure it's that actual character you're talking to, in every case. Someone always survives whatever encounter it is (at least alive at the end), and they're the same race/sex as the person. Often there are other indications too like mention of a big floppy hat, and they're wearing it.
Some are super on-the-nose. There's an orlan guy named Kroze and his story is about how this orlan goes around to villages with a murder of trained crows that he gathers around him to educate children about them.
There's another guy that was named Tabby or something stupid and his story was about how he went to a cypher/watcher/someone who read his soul and told him that half of his soul was feline and he started laughing hysterically. That was super weird. For clicking on him you get a pet orange tabby.
Speaking of Backer NPCs, I wonder if they guy in Plate Mail in the first town is happy that his NPC gets more attention than all the others.
Note that the attention is coming in getting murdered for loot by powergamers, but it's still attention.
Wait, all those NPCs you can touch the soul of is the NPC backers? And you can kill them without any kind of penalty?
Also, RE: Eder. I can totally see how people miss him. I read this thread and knew he was an NPC, but after talking to him once, I tried to talk to him again and he is all like "Have a good day!" If he doesn't join me right then and there, why would I go back and talk to him later to find out if he's changed? Perhaps if they added something to his dialogue where he explicitly said "I don't have any time to talk more now, but come back later. Perhaps we can be of assistance to one another."

He joins you after you talk to the ghost of the dwarf woman. You have to walk by him to leave her and he speaks outloud to you as you pass him. I really don't understand how people miss him.

Ah, okay. Guess I haven't made it that far (as in I've had the chance to play a total of about 2 hours). If that's the case, then I can understand your point. And this Ghost woman; are you forced to meet her prior to leaving town or anything like that? Or can you end up adventuring and never meeting the individual?

I am completely used to not getting party members the first time you meet them. I mean, just one example, in FF7 you meet Aeris on the street selling flowers long before you meet her in the church and she joins you.
I thought it was obvious he was a party member when a) he was one of very few people with an actual portrait, b) when you open the town map there are big indicators that say "Aloth" and "Eder," and c) when you progress the main quest at the tree, he says something out loud to you as you walk past him, prompting you to talk to him again.
Frankly I think it's kind of ridiculous that most people come along with you after your first conversation, it's really contrived. I appreciated Eder for that. I guess it's just too bad that you can't expect most people to pick up on the clues, and if you want someone in everyone's party you kind of have to force them on them.

Whoah whoah whoah... you can get loot off the yellow boxes? Before you would normally have access to it? So if I am not lucky enough to get specific drops or want a really cool magical hat I can murder them for it?
The problem with the backer NPCs is that there's just so many of them. I just got tired of reading the stories.
I have taken to just dipping in and out every now and again. I imagine it would be the same if I were really a watcher - I doubt I'd feel compelled to collect the past life/history of everyone I see

The Ectopsychic Echo is especially powerful when combined with summons. Summon a creature behind the enemy and cast Echo on it so that all the enemies will be caught in its path.
Man it's actually kind of tough to find real optimized build discussions for this game.
For example earlier I was trying to find a good average/common monk damage build. I found some weird specialized things like a tank or non-ability-non-aoe monk that was able to minimize int for big gains elsewhere, but not a good solid standard monk.
Not a lot of discussion about what the best choices are at every level.
Being toward the end of the game and with guys at my keep who have quietly leveled from 5 to 10, I have a lot of choices to make suddenly, and no experience playing those classes. If I just plow through the leveling process I'm probably going to screw them all up royally, I don't know what synergizes well. :P
For one thing I did know that the ranger pet kind of sucks, so I built Sagani all around her bow and lots of quick shots, with nothing invested in her pet.
Monks actually have some abilities that benefit from Intellect. They're a bit hard to build since even though they have high deflection, their strength lies in dealing damage rather than tanking. Rather than having them go on the front line, I find it better to start a fight by having them use a reach weapon like the Quarterstaff or the Pike and have them stand behind a tank to deal damage. Once most of the enemies are engaged by the tank, then switch to regular weapons and engage the leftover enemies so they don't get overwhelmed.
The pet helps increase the Ranger's accuracy. When they're both attacking the same target, the Ranger gets a +5 accuracy bonus, which can be increased to 15 with a talent. Rangers can get the highest accuracy of any class with the help of their pet and the Vicious Aim ability so they're able to do the most damage to single targets and crit a lot.
I have no idea what's truely optimal but when I did use the ranger, I favored stunning shots (lvl 11) and the charge on the pet that makes enemies go prone.
Being able to interrupt enemies at the start of combat is very valuable, and stunning shots seemed to fire very often with a fast weapon.
Monks are best as duelists. They do need to take a steady amount of damage to consistently build wounds, but not too much damage that it gets flattened before it can spend it all. The monk aggros one or two mobs and uses consistent wounds generation to spam Torment's Reach and do silly amounts of damage.
The builds I generally see are variants of 19/18/10/10/3/18 (Mit/Con/Dex/Int/Per/Res). The Sanguine Plate Armor for retaliation attacks and DR. Recovery speed doesn't matter that much, you just need to be able to spend all your wounds on Torment's Reach without dieing horribly.
They need to be healed or have a steady supply of endurance pots though.

There seem to be very few bad choices you can make while levelling. Sod researching intricate builds, I just want to browse the options quickly, pick something that sounds good, and be on my way. I like this.

Think I'm gonna stick with Eder, Kana, Durance, Sagani, Aloth with Kana set up as a secondary tank

I would expect that he would. I mean that's one of the draws of backing anyway, to get some attention, get inserted into the game in some way.
It's kind of a big deal to be lucky enough to be the "most significant backer." For his money, he gave every player an early source of plate mail.
