Ironically, I wouldn't be poor if I didn't pay taxes. Without taxes I wouldn't be living on the margins.
You'd also have a lot less infrastructure!
Oh don't worry I'm not actually an anti-tax nutjob or anything. Although I'm pretty sure my personal contributions to the national budget don't have that big an impact.
The ocean is just a really big collection of water drops!

If it means better healthcare for everyone is be ok if that taxed me more
Services, too! Police, fire services, ambulances, public schooling, public libraries, public parks and lands, so much stuff is paid for by taxes, and yet a lot of people think that paying the government tax is theft...

Probably because the occasional misappropriation of funds and/or use-of-funds-for-something-they-don't-personally-care-about-or-like is the only thing they notice. They take for granted all the stuff that just works, just like they ignore, say, the overall high quality of the roads and only notice the couple of miles that are falling apart.

They spend over 50% of the cities budget on the emergency services here and we all know what know part of it does.

Part of why I don't engage my family about taxes is that they're willfully ignorant of the tax revenue shuffle that takes away from the lower and middle classes and directly benefits 'job creators' and another part is where they automatically assume 'someone should do something about it' while simultaneously demanding less government interference.
We don't need less government and we don't need more government; we need *actual* government instead of the broken system that limps along while pointing fingers at everyone else.
Which is why I'm in favor of a tax system where you get to keep an amount proportional to log(c*$) of your money, where $ is your revenue and c is a constant. That way, all revenue increases get you some net revenue increase, but the amount you gain gets smaller and smaller as your salary becomes more and more ridiculous. This might encourage the rich to spend less on themselves and more on their company, so in the end everyone wins.
What might actually happen is that the company you are working for uses different types of brackets for insurance/retirement/whatever and those mess up your take home pay.

Marginal tax rates are annoying if you get a lot of your pay in bonuses. You end up paying more tax on the larger bonus checks and then you get a large refund when you do your taxes.

Every dollar beyond a bracket break point is taxed at the new rate.
Every prior dollar is taxed at the prior rate.
If you get a raise that puts you 10 bucks into a new bracket, only those 10 dollars will be taxed at the new rate.
