Facebook help because I guess I'm old now

OliverOliver Registered User regular
So I am trying to surprise my wife with a present. The problem is that the best source of this thing is a facebook buy/sell/trade group that she belongs to. I've joined the group, but I know she'll see it if I comment in any of the wall posts in which one of these things is being offered for sale. I can send the seller a message, but since I'm not friends with any of these people my message goes to their 'Other' inbox, which I'm guessing most people just ignore because it gets filled with junk. So far all of my messages have gone unanswered while the seller continues to bump their wall posts haha. Basically what I am looking for are alternate methods of contact (through facebook) that don't make me look like a creeper. Thanks!

Can you just make an alt Facebook account post on their wall thing and ask to talk in private messages where you can explain the situation? Or maybe friend the poster but she can see that too. Heck you can pm me and I'll Facebook add you and tell that person to message you for a surprise sale lol

When you do send the message , you can also change the settings on who is able to see the message, cahnge it to a custom filter, and only allow the group to be allowed to see it

Tried making an alt profile, but the group is private and you need to be approved by a mod to join. I got rejected, presumably because the fake profile looked fake. One route would be to spend some time on a profile to make it look real. I bet I could friend the poster without my wife seeing it, she doesn't really pay attention to my facebook since I obviously never use it. I figured a friend request from a random dude wouldn't get accepted though, can you send a custom message with a friend request?

Thanks for the offer haha, I'll probably have my sister in law help out if I'm going to go the route of having someone else try to contact a person. I may potentially have to do this several times with different sellers depending on how price negotiations go.

Can you filter it such that only the the OP of that wall post can see the message? So it would kind of act like a private message, but not go into the 'other' folder?

Ya it's via Custom filter, it'll pop up a list of everyone you could send it to, just un-checkbox everyone BUT the group

Do you know anyone else in the group besides your wife? if so, could send them a private message and have them do your inquiries for you

The only other person I know in the group is my wife's sister, but she knows someone who my wife doesn't know. That will be my best bet for help if it gets to that point. I've actually had a bit of success having people see my private messages since I originally made this thread.

I looked at the custom filter and I may try that, but I'm a bit nervous about misinterpreting who is and isn't blocked because my cover will be blown immediately. Anyway, thanks for all the help! I think this is solved enough to be closed.

One final tip, You can always delete a message , if you think you've made a post that's fishy, just scrap it and start again.

Why not just ask your wife's sister and give her a run down of what you are trying to do.
