You can totally tell where the funding was cut in Xenogears. :?
That's awesome that they were able to release Xenoblade without any meddling. It must have felt nice for Takahashi.
There's still some unused huuuuuuuuuuuuuge areas in the game files you can visit by using cheats (I believe one is the other leg). They probably didn't have either the time or ideas to include them. But that's not a meddling thing. There's cut content in pretty much every game in existance.
In a narrative sense the game is fully complete, unlike Gears/Saga.
Xenoblade's world is already enormous. Nobody is missing anything with that cut. Hell, a lot of the maps the story only takes you through half of what's there even.
luckily there's interminable fetch quests for the other half
Not really? Like, the extra areas of Tephra cave outlevel the final boss. There's only a couple quests in that part...

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

No, an MMO would have had triple the number of fetch quests. At least. You'd have done like ten quests just for the first part of Gaur Plains (before the bridge). Just for the story.

I'm just bitter that Bionis Leg forced me to do every single quest before Colony 6 that came right after. I thought I was going to have a bit of time to space things out

Well, the point of no return for them is whenever you want it to be... you can come back after beating the game if you want.
Most of Saga's narrative dissonance comes from the trainwreck called Ep. II. Namco, in deciding that male rpg heroes focus grouped better, fired Soraya Saga when she refused to rewrite Ep. II and the rest of the series to have Rubedo as the main character. Namco decided they could write and design the games/series better by committee. And it's why Ep. II has a split character focus between Shion and Rubedo and why the plot seems to go completely off the rails somewhere around the halfway point (where the Soraya Saga written scenes end). After the backlash to II, they re-inserted most of Soraya Saga's already written material into Ep. III.
It's a shame that Ep. II was bad, because bad censorship and localization changes aside, Ep. III is a fantastic game and the best in the trilogy. Not to mention some of the shared plot details from her that never happened were much better than what we got.
I gave up on the franchise when Yasunori Mitsuda left
Really? The OST is what made you leave? Yuki Kajiura's music for Ep II and Ep III were incredible while Ep I is one of Mitsuda's weaker works.
The characters honestly don't bother me much, but I'm a fan of 80's - Early 90's anime and it pretty much just looks like that but in 3D. I can see how it might be considered a little "off" though.
From what I've seen, the models look like Xenosaga Episode II and beyond models, just not stylized as well as they were in Chronicles. They definitely look Xeno to me.

Many of the fetch quests in Chronicles was made more bearable since you didn't have to deliver the items back to the quest giver. Instead, in many cases, it would just complete the quest and give you the experience/items for it. I loved that.
Edit: And as tedious as some of the quests were, they did some nice world/character building for the characters in the towns.

The fact that the quest objectives were entirely random and identical - and there was no navigation for the quests that weren't - made exploration purposeless and frustrating. There is a lot of room for improvement.

So far the only QoL change I've seen in videos is that items in the distance show up with a little digital popup thing, so no more looking for needles in haystacks.
Sounds like everything else is the same though. From quests requiring rare drops of those items, to possibly having some of those items in your inventory but not knowing it they're needed for a future quest (god I hope there isn't a fucking inventory limit this time). I haven't seen anything, but I really hope they made finding quest givers easier.
It's all blech. Not game breaking, but they were the worst part of the first game and really dragged it down. And they didn't learn the lesson.

Shoot, only about two weeks until X comes out, huh? I've been meaning to finish Xenoblade Chronicles before then, after having had it on hold for months and months. IIRC, I'm at Gallahad Fortress, though I've really forgotten what's going on in the plot. How much more game is left, and how long do you think it will take if I I only do what's required?
I haven't been keeping up with X news, so I have a few questions. First, what's this story stuff people are concerned about? Bad story? Lack of story?
Second, is the structure of the game anything like its predecessor, and if so, has it been made more manageable and balanced at all? The first game is a completionist's nightmare, as even just finding all of the quests was a huge pain, and you trivialize the combat by gaining too much XP from sidequests.

So I'm trying to do the who hard drive thing for the first time for my Wii U. Nothing crazy expensive. So I grabbed a 3.5" bare 500gig hard drive and an enclosure with a power cord.

Very light on story.
There are like a handful of main story quests and they are gated by level.
I'm sure during those quests there are lots of big fun Xeno style cutscenes though. I would imagine at least.
So in between the main story quests you just do side quests and stuff to grind up to the next story quest. So it's like Story stuff >> grindgrindgrind >>story stuff >>grindgrindgrind etc
I do look forward to making mechs and accidentally falling off the world until they are destroyed and I have to buy new ones. (That may seem like sarcasm but it's not that seems weirdly hilarious to me)

Supposedly there is a pretty large amount of story within the quest system, making a chunk of the quests more involved than what was in Xenoblade. It'll be interesting, but I am actually most looking forward to exploring.
The game seems to be about a new colony forming on this new planet, so you are exploring and discovering along with the colonists. That entire idea appeals to me greatly.

Yea I certainly think there is fun to be had in the game. It's just going to be so very different than would be expected after Xenoblade in some ways. But building my own mecha and making my own animu superstar to play dress up with should be cool.
Side quests have been greatly expanded. There are affinity missions for all of your allies which flesh out their stories and personalities, and "normal" quests which tell the story of how humanity is colonizing planet Mira. This is probably the biggest difference to Xenoblade Chronicles, where basically the whole story was packed into the main missions and the side quests were pretty inconsequential.

Oh the character side-quests are good to hear about. I do like that.
There are more than 4, yes? I swear I remember seeing a bunch of potential characters, but all the promotional video seems to show the "Cross" character you make, along with the same 3 NPCs.
According to some of the discussions/previews, Lyn is one of the better characters of the game.
I don't care for her look at all, so if I've got other choices, I'll definitely be taking them for the most part. I assume you need to use those characters to do quests related to them though, so I'm sure I'll use her some.
