The impression I got and am getting is that essentially every single NPC with a name can be a party member.
Which makes me slightly worried just how much of an impact they all can have on the story. On the other hand, I have personally said that not every person in your typical RPG group needs a deep seated 10 point connection to the big bad guy to justify their place in the group. Plus there's all the news that most of the game's "story" is done through character development and affinity quests and all that.
End of the day, we'll probably get enough personal character story for everybody to justify why they're coming with us to explore. But probably not enough to explain why they're coming along with us to kill God ("Hey you said we were going to get some burritos, what's with this existential bullshit?!")
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
A couple of the "tag-along" characters were offered as DLC in Japan. In the Western version, they are available in the base game but obviously don't play a huge role in the main story. Others like Elma, Lin, Gwin and Lao are more important to the plot.

Maybe it'll be like Suikoden. You have your group of primary characters who get most of the development, but through side quests and recruitment, you get backstory to all of the side characters that can go out and adventure along with you.

I mean the game has been out in Japan for a bit now.
So I'm p sure we can get an answer to the amount of party characters quite easily.

I've been trying to stay mostly dark so I can play without knowing a lot about the world/story. I have been purposely not looking at any of the Japanese release info. Thus all the guessing on my end. :P
By the time someone maxes the affinity system Xenoblade will be documentary

Mostly because that's all it's intended to do as it's comparing apples to oranges to strawberries.
A pointless statement for the trolol of it all.
I don't really think it's pointless to compare one open world exploration game to another on size of said open world that you get to explore. Xenoblade Chronicles world is supposedly pretty fucking huge with intense scale for both its geography and its creatures.

Well first of that's not what this dude was doing so kinda a moot point, no?
But if you want a comparison sheerly on size sure you can say "this one is bigger than that one" as long as you aren't using that as a metric for anything else.
It seems to me that is exactly the comparison he's making. The size and scale of the world and the ease of traversal and exploration. In his opinion these factors in Xenoblade Chronicles far exceed those in the Witcher and Fallout.
I don't see how you can read the tweet that you yourself linked and NOT see that he's comparing the explorable worlds to each other.

I didn't link it?
And explorable is the key word. Explorable means a lot of things. Interaction with the environment is a big part of exploring for a lot of people. The more interactive you make the world the smaller it has to be given the same tech and hardware. The more you remove intractability the larger you can make that world. This is why you can't compare them because they are not even TRYING to do the same things.
Plus a game with vehicles allows for greater expanses. You can't do that in a game without vehicles to the same degree without driving people insane.
It's a matter of design and technology. You can't compare these games 1 to 1 to 1. They have different goals in using the design space and technology.

Ended up ordering the standard edition at an online store that usually delivers new releases one or two days early. I've had the special edition pre-ordered at a local store for a while now, but its contents are honestly not that great so if I get the standard edition early I'm just gonna cancel that order.
I wonder if I can get Fallout done before this comes out. CHALLGENGE ACCEPTED.
I'm also a bit meh on the special edition, but I kind of want to keep the Wii special edition line going from the Pandora's Tower and Last Story ones I managed to get.
Imma just download it. I'm going to download all of the data-packs anyway. I wish I felt as "safe" about my external hard drive as I do my PS3/4's hard drives. I've got so much digital Wii U stuff that if that hard drive failed, I'll probably just toss the system rather than try to redo everything again in all of my games.

That sounds a lot like one simple global completion percentage, taking into account tertiary stuff like achievements, the collectopaedia, and so on. It doesn't literally mean in 50 hours he's only a quarter way through the plot.
Then again, if you are the type of person who likes to have that 100% number... "looks at his 120 hour Xenoblade save..."

So I just ordered an enclosure and a HD so I could expand my Wii U storage so that I could buy this digitally if I so choose. Which I guess means I've decided to get this game.
Inevitably I'll play for 20-30 hours and get like 5% completed at that point then stop playing it and never touch it again like so many other large open world games.
Playing Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time. Just over 2hours in......
FIORA NOOOOOOOO
Took me 30 mins fighting that fucker to understand the break, topple mechanic and chain links. I didn't realise you could press up and down in the hotbar lol.
