With this news, Heavensward this weekend and actually finishing off FFXIV main content, it has been a week full of hype. I think Square is through the dark times.
Oh well at least I can use the Chakram on Rinoa. I don't think I'll ever use the spear though.
Kain with that spear is pretty awesome honestly.
Yeah, I managed to get two of those spears a while back and finished maxing it out during the festival. Kain easily does the most damage in the group, even higher than my maxed Cloud with his buster sword.

And just as I said that, Nomura just hinted that the story is going to deviate from the original:
When asked if the remake, in development for PlayStation 4, will follow the Final Fantasy VII narrative exactly or feature new elements, director Tetsuya Nomura gave GameSpot an ambiguous answer.
“We’ve announced an HD port version on the PlayStation 4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4,” Nomura said through a translator. “You’ll have this extremely, very, very pretty FFVII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, it’s like, why have the same exact game?
“We think that if a game is on a certain platform and that platform becomes obsolete, then we’d recommend playing the new port version,” he added.
He's absolutely right.
This is a good thing, assuming they offer a story that's at least equal (or better) than the original.
Oh jesus fucking christ, he's going to make this a shitty Action RPG, isn't he?

If by shitty you mean awesome, then maybe? It's a given to me that this isn't going to look or play like the original. The 97-era ATB just isn't suited to a big modern console game.
There are two ways this goes. They either change absolutely nothing, because they shouldn't, and they release a faithful remake that is just that, a remake of a game from 1997, or they unacceptably tweak "little things here and there" that make it an entirely different game regardless of if the overall story is the same. Any suggestions that they change X because "this is 2015 and not 1997" are incredibly stupid. Square shouldn't give one shit about the social impact of something they wrote in 1997 and are simply re-releasing today.
I am totally fine with an alternate universe FF7 with a slightly different story existing, but don't blow smoke up my ass and tell me it's a remake then.

Hoo boy, the backlash over this when it comes out is going to be huge.
There's virtually no consensus about what a remake should be like, so every change is going to piss someone off. And there are going to be big changes, because there won't be a way around them.
Even leaving out the cross-dressing thing (which at AC graphics quality would get consternation from some parts, I'm sure), what is Cait Sith going to look like with that level of detail? I have a hard time seeing a toy cat on a giant stuffed body fitting in with the rest of them.
I went out and bought a Galaxy S6 yesterday. I can't begin to tell you how FF:RK runs with a real phone. It took me ~10 minutes to burn through 80 stamina this morning when it normally took at LEAST 30 minutes. All prompts click immediately. Scrolling is faster, loading is almost non-existent.

Yeah, I am of the opinion that nothing should be changed, good or bad, but I also am definitely excited for the alternate/parallel universe game we'll be getting instead.
Since they are changing things, does anyone really think any of the "Omg guys. <iconic scene>. In. HD." will actually exist? They just won't even make them. There will be no muscley men scene at the Honeybee Inn, if the Inn even exists. There will be no (or extremely light, visually) cross dressing. There will be no cat fight on the Junon cannon. Red will not be wearing a Shinra uniform and walking on two legs on the ship. They will find easier ways to do all of those things while being petrified in a business sense that they might offend some precious whiner if they DON'T change things.

It's going to be changed (I hesitate, but really want to say "shit up") by a bunch of feedback from a bunch of "fans" that either barely played the original, didn't at all, or weren't even born. That is surely my asshole cynicism talking, though.

It's being made largely by the original developers, there has been nothing to indicate that fan feedback has anything to do with it. They are going to remake the game they made originally, however they envision it.

Since they're still releasing the Steam version on PS4, I'll bunker down and force myself to complete the original, since I've never finished it. I mean, I've seen like 97% of the game because my roommate in college played it in our dorm room. I never felt the need to play it myself past disc 1 since I saw him play. But I do want to experience it for myself now, 15 years later, at my own pace.
That will allow me perspective on the remake when it comes out in a couple years.

I used to always play ff7 with my family watching (having only one t.v and console didn't leave much choice) getting to that scene...and playing along far past what was required and watching everyone squirm uncomfortably was the best.
I wonder if they'll change costumes during the game, aside from disguises.
Like, as someone who lives in a place with -40 C winters, the one part of the game that totally broke my immersion - beyond the magic and talking dogs and this guy are sick - was the great glacier part, and everyone walking around in short sleeves with no gloves or anything.
Lol, your squats and arm rubbing ain't gonna save you.

At least they recognized it was cold and they would probably die with that clothing. That's a far cry beyond most RPGs.

That's true. At least they had the body temperature mechanic. I'm pretty sure in FFX you walk up a freezing mountain and there's Wakka hanging around shirtless with no trouble.
It's just kinda funny that in VII I'm pretty sure the party gets warned about the weather conditions at least twice, and still they just grab a map and a snowboard and just go for it. Not even a hat.
...the mental image of Cloud with hat-hair is intensely amusing.

What, you've never increased your internal body temp to offset below freezing temps by doing some bodyweight squats? Please, everybody knows that's how it works.

I'm actually interested to see what they do and don't change.
I know some folks are going to be all "it was perfect don't touch anything" but I'd have to agree with Nomura that if you're going to do a release of this size might as well go big.
I think the worst they'd do plot wise is try to add some of the Crisis Core plot to the game.

People are going to bitch about every single little detail that comes to light about the game while it is being developed. Then when it is finally released all those people are going to buy it and say it is the best thing ever. Mark my words, it happens every single time.
