I ran Snowcloak last night for the very first time in my run through the story. I still haven't gotten to experience anything in Heavensward, but Snowcloak was pretty neat. Makes me wish I hadn't quit playing for 15 months so I could have experienced some of this content as it was released and when it was actually challenging.
With them handing out 110 gear in story quests, literally everything is a faceroll. I didn't know what to expect when I queued for King Mog, so I researched it first. I did my due diligence. Then we facerolled it and I was irked that I even bothered to educate myself. So for Leviathan and Ramuh I just went in blind and facerolled those too.
Given that I'm in 2.3 and just completed Snowcloak last night before bed, anyone have any sort of approximation of how many more hours of content I have before I can move to Heavensward content?

4-5 on the outside, if I had to guess.

So the attribute allocation for dark knights is all strength?
So the attribute allocation for dark knights is all strength?
I assumed all tanks went pure vitality.
I went 50/50 because they are pretty squishy so far 30-50. 46 I got the 30% dmg reduct CD and it was much better in the dungeon I did after that. Strength also means more mana for DRKs and so I can see the thought process behind it. More mana more rotations.

Usually, you go STR points with VIT accessories pre-50, because you get synced DPS with a taste for ham. At 50, you flop it over, going VIT points and STR accessories.
I've been rolling with my points in VIT and fending accessories and it's made surviving the HW leveling dungeons a bit easier.
Also, I believe all of your self MP regen on a Dark Knight is a flat value. I know Syphon Strike restores half of the cost of Dark Arts from experience. Blood Price is a set value that scales with your MP pool and I haven't really used Blood Weapon enough because I'm usually tanking and don't drop out of Grit.
Oh yeah, I looked at the tooltip and Blood Weapon does restore MP on damage, however you'd have to turn off Grit for the whole duration as turning Grit back on cancels Blood Weapon.
So if a new player had the main game, and the expansion, the story quests exp is increased? Or is it just increased in general? Thought I saw that somewhere. Sorry for asking these questions which were probably discussed. At work, and can't look it up myself right now.

So there was talk of them adding new gear to some of the main game to speed people through endgame content to Heavenward more quickly.
Does that apply to everybody even those who are still playing without the expansion or will you only get that stuff from those quests if you have Heavensward installed?
Story EXP was increased and the rewards were changed to assist with newbies in getting straight into Heavensward without being hilariously undergeared.
Alright dudes, I need your help. Specifically I need some help from those of you playing on PS4.
I double-purchased this game. I got just the xpac for PC since I already owned the core game. And on PS4 I got the combo pack that has ARR + HW.
I'm having some difficulty with a few controller related things. I'm trying to setup my hotbars to controller mapping and I can't quite figure it out. I have figured out how to move the starting abilities (Sprint, Return, Teleport, and Autoattack) around from slot to slot. But I cannot figure out how to add new skills to the bar.
Also, the whole "use touchpad as mouse" thing seems a bit janky. I can move the cursor around just fine. But when I click the button it jumps the cursor all over the screen, rather than clicking the spot where I've got my pointer. Any advice on how to mouse around the screen properly?
Edit 1: On the topic of mouse movement on a controller, how do I click and drag to expand the size of my chat box? I see there's an interactive corner in the top right but I can't get it to select or allow me to expand my chat box.
Lastly, is there a "best practices" for controller play? What are the essentials for keybinds? Obviously Sprint, Return, Teleport, Summon Chocobo are on there. I'm assuming I probably want to make hotkeys for the /beckon emote and /soothe since there are a bunch of Leves that use those? What else do I need?
Edit 2: Is there a way to move the camera further out from my character? I don't like how close the default position is to my character. It's too restrictive.
So most menus you can open the submenu using I believe square. It should be listed on the bottom of the menu. If you open the submenu while you have an ability selected on the ability page it should give you the option to add to hotbar.
For zooming in and out you can press L1 and use the right stick for that.
@Kyanilis Thanks a bunch! Got some hotbars made. I was going backwards and trying to open menus after selecting the button, rather than the other way around. Also got my camera zoomed out. That helps a ton!
@ForceVoid Mostly just for clicking on things on the screen. The PS4 controller has a surprisingly good touchpad and I would like to be able to use it, but the way they have it programmed in this game seems counter-intuitive. I haven't figured it out yet. Like for instance, I would think that I could move the mouse cursor over the chat window, click the pressure pad and "click and drag" to expand the size of the chat window, but that doesn't seem to work.

Oh well, I think I'm at least playable for now.
Yeah, click and drag is a PITA on the PS4 controller. It took me forever to make the map overlay bigger. The corner hit zone is tiny, and tap-swiping is finicky.
You know how to hot swap crossbars, correct? Once you get to around level 35-40, you'll run out of space in your first bar just with abilities and cool downs, to say nothing of cross class skills and QoL stuff like summoning your mount, teleporting, sprinting, etc.

One of the things I like about my outfit is that it makes me look like I'm in a constant endurance test with the elements. (maybe the slightest of HW intro spoilers?)

Yeah, I figured that out. On Hotbar 1 I put basic mobility functions on L2. Sprint, Return, Teleport, and Summon Mount. Then all the rest of my Hotbar 1 functions are my primary combat rotations. I'm level 50 so I have all my core skills. On Hotbar 2 I set defensive moves and cross-class skills, and also pet commands on L2 in the same position as my mobility moves.
Well, I think I've got most of it figured out on PS4 now. I was able to stumble my way through Shiva tonight using a controller and all new, unfamiliar keybinds. Changing hotkey pages is super clumsy for me right now, and I'm sure my DPS suffered quite a bit for it. But I've got my main two rotations on the first page, so I can at least execute my DoT rotation and my burst rotation. Jumps, cooldowns, and one-off moves are another story, however.
My wife got coerced by work people into trying this, which means I have also given it a shot. Made a dragonlady spear user who looks badass, and holy crap is this game gorgeous. Combat is *slow* though which is taking some getting used to. Not being able to activate an ability until I'm up a mob's ass is somewhat frustrating.

it speeds up some as you level up, but mainly it continues to introduce new things to pay attention to.
once you hit 30-40 it feels much more involved.

As mentioned before in this thread, combat is rather deliberately slow at the start. The game assumes whoever plays is a complete MMO neophyte and some of the content is designed to hand hold you through the basics like pulling small groups of mobs, attack stuff from behind and keeping your gear up to date is important.
That and combat really slowly breaks you into the class mechanics. Unfortunately, you've picked the slowest class to ramp up in combat involvement. The optimal way to DPS at the low levels is to keep your buff up, and keep spamming Impulse Drive...
However, here's an example of what you'll be doing in ~20s at level 50:
Heavy Thrust, Leg Sweep, Internal Release, Impulse Drive, Power Surge, Disembowel, Blood for Blood, Chaos Thrust, Jump, Phlebotomize, Dragonfire Dive, True Thrust, Spineshatter Dive, Vorpal Thrust, Life Surge, Full Thrust
Well, the combat never actually speeds up. You just get more buttons to push. There is no denying that compared to the rest of the industry, the actual combat is not as outright fast paced. Of course compared to that, every single ability looks like you're summoning the might of the heavens to smite thine enemy.
But yeah Lancer is the damned worst about it at a low level, Dragoon is my main so I know that pain. They don't really unlock their full rotation until they are damn near 50.
So the last time I played was when there was only 5 turns of Coil, pre-Crystal Tower and all that nonsense. I'm very impressed with how much new stuff has been added since then, although it means there's a huge amount of shit I need to get through before I can actually get to Heavensward content. I kinda wish the vast majority of this stuff was optional instead of being tied to the main story; having to do a whole bunch of pointless guildhests was not exactly exciting. Still enjoying myself, though. Forgot how much I enjoyed FF14.

I will say the animations are a large part of why the combat stays fun.
But I do continue to appreciate the deliberateness of the combat. (at least when tanking) I'm mostly just doing my threat rotation by muscle memory at this point but I'm watching where the dps and healers are standing, watching if there's any adds that I need to pick up, and watching if there's any situation where I'd need to move the targets (boss or trash) or myself.
I like that your average fight isn't very hectic but rewards efficient execution more than fast execution.
Once I hit 60 on my Warrior, I'm going to be looking at leveling a healing or dps job I think. I want to see all the fights I've done from a perspective other than tank.
(And somewhere in there, work on the gathering/crafting classes.)
Hmm..I never got how to reliably target stuff with the controller. I should probably fire it up again since I'm only doing pre HW story quests right now.

Left and right on the dpad for enemies, up and down for your party.
There is a way to cycle through the aggro list, but I'm not sure the command.
I think combat is better in 14 than in WoW and other MMOs. By slowing the pace, they have kept an element of precision that is not present in most other MMOs.

Yeah but it was real messy on fates. I don't think it targets "nearest target" by default.
Target cycling goes left-> right within your field of view.
Yeah, and that is really annoying. Can I change it so it targets my closest target? Because that's who I'm trying to hit, not the dude out in bumblefuck nowhere.

59-60? Just run Library. It's like 500k at 20-30 minutes a run depending on your team.
