Whee, level 10 get, I can finally start growing my own berries instead of dashing wildly through the jungle mashing use.
Assuming outdoor plots, is rainfall consistent enough for watering to not be a concern?
Similarly, has anyone mathhammered how many farm plots a given dino can reasonably keep fertilized?
For that matter, has it been mathhammered how many dinos a berry plot can keep fed?

Honestly, it's better to gather the berries enough to get a dodo trained (or gather around 20-25 meat and tame a dilo) with a combo of preferred berries (the yellow ones) and narco berries (or Narcotic if you can make it), and then use the bird to store more berries for longer to tame a trike. Then farming (at least for berries) goes out the window.
I make art things! deviantART:Kalnaur ::: Origin: Kalnaur ::: UPlay: Kalnaur
I'm planning on setting up some plots just to play with the planting system, because there are seeds for things that aren't the berries I usually get. Also having an in-house supply of emergency narcoberries isn't a bad idea.
How does taming work when you have pets with you? Like, will my new turtle accidentally kill my target? Or reduce the taming effectiveness by damaging it? Or another example, if I use dilos to keep up with a speedy parasaur, will they murder it?

From my limited experience in solo mode, you could set your pets to passive while you knock out the target, then put them back to neutral once the target is sleeping. In solo, my turtle wouldn't attack unconscious things while neutral.

After lurking around for the past couple of pages, I went ahead and bought this. Is it generally recommended that I play by myself for a while to get the basics down before joining the PA server? Also, as I don't know the usual password, would anyone be willing to PM me with it for whenever it is that I join?

I'm more worried about what they'll do while I am trying to knock it out. Guess I need a scorpion for that.

Does anyone who's been around Kun Lun know what's been happening to my raptors? I've yet to have one last more than a day no matter if it's on passive and in the garage or was on neutral.

That's why you set them to passive for that bit if you are concerned about hurting the target.

Ok, crazy question time. I came across a few structures around the SW beach area, and was getting ideas for my own little hut area. I see people with those large fenced off areas, some of which are using thatch walls...yet I can't seem to place thatch walls without the foundation? What am I missing?

Later on you get fence foundations for putting walls on.

There's a separate fence foundation engram you can learn.
damnit. I was like 5 minutes away from training my carbonemys. Then a stupid croc ate it. I tried to pull aggro, but the croc refused to stop eating the carbo.
Lost most of the fiber that i'd gathered while preparing narcotics. (also my supply of narcotics and narcoberries)
New plan: Learn the spike barricade recipe and surround any dinos with a wall of spikes. Its gonna be a pain to re-harvest all of those narcoberries though.
Leveled up the new guardians of the SW a bit this evening and took out two spinos that were in the area, good times.
Managed to fall to my death off of Horus and lose him in the jungle near where we're planning the village - thankfully managed to find him again and then recreate all my belongings.
Got @Kalnaur moved over to the isle with his dino/dodo entrourage (then flew Larry back to @MuddBudd and was sad to see that a dilo took him out later).
Checked out Blue Base and their fancy new lighting, wrote down the mats for the mammoth saddle BP.
Scouted for Rexes in Death Valley.
Scouted the city area again and the surrounding areas for mammoths.
Stopped in and fed the dinos at the homes of @Ktulue and @Malakaius.
Realized how late it was - stopped and posted this, then...passed out. At least, that's my prediction.
So once Carnos stop being scary, is there any other real non-player threat aside from rexes and/or whatever goes on in the caves?
I've yet to see a Rex (biggest threats I've come across are the Carnos), but I've got a pack of a half-dozen raptors and a pair of carnos running around with me and I feel like I'm basically the Dinosaur King
Today, with Kalnaur's help I turned my makeshift walls into an actual dino pen, complete with gate. Also grabbed a bunch of supply crates which are spawning weirdly close to structures right now, and tamed a Parasaur mount.

Earlier there was mention of farming berries using farm plots. Dont do this! Its still easier and faster to gather berries by hand than to farm them. Just keep pressing 'e' in a berry rich location. To tame a herbivore early, find a trike in a area with lots of berries. Preferably one that's hung up by trees or rocks. If you want to start farming plant the rare stuff you can't find by gathering!
You will want:
stack 100+ narco berries or better bring any narcotic if available
stack of 100 mejo berries (others will work as well, mejo is better)
30ish stones or tranq arrows (tranqs are better)
sling shot or bow
1-2 hours of free time
find a low level trike (get close to see the level) as low level dinos take less time to tame. You first big herbivore is meant to gather not be a combat machine (even though it will be good at that too)
keep hitting it in the head with the sling shot. turn and sprint as needed.
drop the stack of mejo berries on it. (you can put other berries on it too)
once its downs feed it narcotic/narco berries as needed
Now wander around the trike gathering more berries. Keep an eye out for predators. You will be waiting so spend the time gathering berries/fiber by hand. You can dump stuff on the trike, but it will vanish if he wakes up before getting tamed. Still its not a bad idea if you are getting loaded down with fiber/berries. The goal is to keep getting more narco and other berries while the current ones are being used. Its better to feed it mejo but not critical. The gathering gives you something productive to do while you are taming. You may want to build a fire/standing torch next to the trike and toss wood on so you can find it in the dark to.
Don't force feed the trike food. Just let it eat as needed. Forcefeed it narcotics every time its down by 40 or narco berries every so often (8) each to get it torpor up. Just don't let it hit zero torpor.
Keep dumping more berries on it as you go... check every minute or 2 till you get a feel for the rate the torpor goes down buy.
If you are using narco berries back off when it gets close to taming. This will get you a better taming efficiency. Just don't let it get to zero torpor. When it doubt drug it up more.
When you are done, you will have a trike buddy. Dump the first 5-10 levels into hitpoints. Make him tough!
You can learn the saddle engram at 20, find and existing blue print or ask someone for a saddle. Trike saddles are super easy to make materials wise. There's enough high level players on the PA server someone should be able to get you help with a saddle.
With a trike you can gather berries quickly, much faster than by hand. Don't ever try to gather berries from a parasuarus they suck at it
For berries is goes:
Bronto > Steggo/Mammoth > Trike > other herbivores
Even a 'just a trike' will be solid for fighting/gathering. Just get those hit points up 1st so you don't waste all that time. Good luck!
The dino taming tips in the OP say tintoberries for Trikes... is that right or is it mejo? i used tinto to tame mine but i have no idea how to tell how efficient it was.
Also speaking of, can anyone Make me a trike saddle? i maybe have the mats for it? if not i've got some fibre i can give.

Always use mejoberries for herbivores. Some folks dug into the files and found that mejos give 30 affinity, whereas all other berries give 20.
So when you want your dino pals to go collect you should set them to wander?
I'm still confused how my turtles were able to generate some metal tools when the highest things we killed on my trip back to Moth Falls (but ended up at MVickers's lodge--on the opposite coast) were raptors and sabertooth tigers.
Edit: I think my next engram investment is going to include a compass. I get lost way too easily while chasing down supply drops.
Last night I finally managed to train a Phiomia and make a saddle. I was wondering if there is a way to fight from Phiomia-back or harvest things, or if it's strictly a method for getting from A to B.
How good are trikes/steggos at wood gathering? Thinking I might have a clearcutting project in my near future.
Terrible. They get thatch mostly but not even a lot of that. Faster to cut trees down by hand, turn them into whatever you're building (i assume walls or other building parts) and use the animal to carry the products (which are a LOT lighter than the wood used to create them).

Today I wanted to go exploring, so I stripped down to a basic cloth set of armor and took stone tools and journeyed off into the woods in search of loot drops and scenic vistae. Found the top of a mountain in a forest, put a thatch foundation on it, just for funsies. Coming down the mountain I spotted a level 3 stego and thought... why not? The answer is actually "because it will take way too long and you will have to scavenge the whole time". But I did it anyway. Two full night cycles and 3 days is a really long time to harvest berries in hopes of obtaining narco's to keep your unconscious stego unconscious. But I did that too. Then I had to figure out where exactly I was, and how to get back home. That was a trip I made twice due to a server reset. But I did it. How I have a dodo, a dillo, a trike and a stego all chilling on my little peninsula. It's getting crowded.
Can someone please make a Stego saddle for me? Or trade Fiber for one? Or have me provide the mats so you gain experience?
e: I'm 24 now, so if I can learn the engram at 25 then disregard.

Man, this seems to have been a good week for getting into ARK, they've made optimizations on CPU(15-20% perf gain), RAM(3GB server reduction, 1GB client reduction), and GPU(25% perf gain :edit: plus another 10% from another patch just now), according to their changelogs.

On the subject of pens, when tame dinos are set to wander, is there a tether range at all, or could they theoretically wander far enough to get lost?
Thus far my dilos have been free ranging along the beach nicely enough, bit of a hassle to gather them up if I wanna go hunting, but no actual vanishings yet.
