On the subject of pens, when tame dinos are set to wander, is there a tether range at all, or could they theoretically wander far enough to get lost?

Thus far my dilos have been free ranging along the beach nicely enough, bit of a hassle to gather them up if I wanna go hunting, but no actual vanishings yet.

I think they just wander completely, although I've heard discussion of a 'hunt and return' behavior option.

Don't set you dinos to wander! To have the herbivores gather you need a saddle and climb on it and then attack the berry bushes.

Your herbivore that had metal in its inventory probally got it off another dino it was fighting. You can find all sorts of gear in the higher level dinos.

Leave your dinos on neutral. keep them in a pen. If you dont have dino gates tear down and put up thatch walls for the short term when take them out/return them.

Congrats on the Steggo. You will never want for berries ever again! I probally won't be on much tonight, but I'm sure we can get someone to help with a steggo saddle!

That's not exactly a small shack. 4x3 plus that little extra room is a fairly large amount of floor space for a single person in this game. If you plan things out right you can easily have a bed, a preserver, a pair of camp fires, 6 large storage chests, a smithy and a pair of refining forges in there. Plus you have room on the roof to land a pair of flyers.

Oh it's by no means a hovel no, but compare how much wood it physically looks like it needs to the amount of forest/jungle/whatever it is that I had to clear to make it. Similarly, compare the size of mineable rocks to how much stone you actually get out of it by the time it gibs.

    Oh, before I forget.

I want to say... Mvrck has a base next to a waterfall across from what I have taken to calling Harvest Island (due to its large amounts of relatively tame beasts and trees)... I built a small thatch shack across the inlet from you to use while taming my Steg. Please feel free to take it down if needed. Otherwise I'll get it next time I am over there.

I've heard brontos can rake in thousands of berries with no effort at all. I've heard that as I dug in the mud for enough narco berries to make the narcotics to train a carbonemys (who later was eaten by a sarc ~20 minutes before I estimated training would be done).

Farwell carbonemys. You will be missed. Your time with us all was cut short.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of trikes and a few stego that moved in around my home (added a smallish pen to store my dilo herd in, Jurassic Park this isn't, these guys can't path through an open door to save their lives), and since I'm more or less out of desire to try expanding my house at present because of all the wood required, I've started going on berry harvest runs to start building up enough narc to see about sitting around for hours watching a bar fill.

Half tempted to migrate to the server, but then I'd have to start all over all over again. Plus find somewhere that hasn't already been civilized.

Are pteros supposed to eat, like, a world-shatteringly insane amount of food?

I finally got to make a saddle for my pteranodon, and I flew him...not very far. From the little bay on the southeast end of the island down to the blue obelisk, less than a 30 second flight.

He started at full hunger, but still ate an entire stack of 30 cooked meat on the way there.

Is it just because I was sprinting? Is there a bug of some sort involved?

I've moved myself to a new spot to build something a bit grander (once I get the materials).

Which means my old place is now empty.

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=470141522

It's sitting at Lat 75, Long 37. It's built onto a cliff ledge above a lagoon, has a bunch of empty crates and a bed, and a pen for holding dinos. Feel free to move in if you need a place around there. I think if you aren't in the Warboyz you might need me to come dismantle the doors. Not sure.

@MegaMek and I are continuing to build on that river island near south 2. Construction of the lighthouse continues. Since we don't know where everybody else is on the island, we've temporarily formed our own mini-tribe. We'll join up with you guys once we have the capacity to safely push beyond our home.

We managed to tame a trike! We named her Berry. We were a bit lacking in building materials for building a proper defensive wall around our base, so we knocked out the walls on the second floor, put in a ramp, parked the dinos up top, and destroyed the ramp. I'm happy with how it turned out. It is like defense 101 from the zombie survival guide.

    jw5dmfv21ask.jpg

Plans for tomorrow are to tame a few carbonemys. Some to act as heavy freezers to replace the dodos, and a few to be robust tanks and workhorses to follow us into the field when fetching lumber.

Also, is this anyone's Philomena? She's chilling in the water near ~84, 60.

HMM. I'm sorta close to one of the pillars (the blue one, I think, never paid that close attention to it). There any hazards in reaching them beyond the presumed likelyhood of running into carnivores along the way?

Went ahead and took the plunge, the trip to the blue obelisk went quite well. As I suspected, you don't get to bring gear with you when you upload a dude, also it removes you from that server, so if you wanna go back, you get to do the obelisk hike again.

Forgot to pick I spawn location when I joined the PA server, so I got the default of East 1. Did a bit of wandering, found a promising location, started a hut.

On the one hand, thanks for the invite to the tribe.

On the other hand, NEVER EVER EVER change tribes while mid-tame. I thought the carbo would default back to me. NOPE. 1.5 hours and 45 narcotics down the drain.

Just a heads up for other people if the scenario pops up on other servers.

On the bright side, I consider this a bug to report. You'd think it would default down to the individual who knocked out the beast.

Over near Mudzgut's old place, near X:19, Y:85 on the map, there are 3 small chests, a sign, and two torches. When I remember (I did not before signing off just now) I will leave the torches on for easier viewing. Anything in the Chests is free for anyone; it's mainly things from white and green supply drops. However, sometimes there might be something nicer, in case I don't have the room to store it, or already have it myself.

First come, first serve, and I will be emptying them at my leisure if I find new things. So basically, new free stuff daily to semi-daily. I will add a cabinet behind them; if you want to leave a donation of stone, wood, thatch or fiber, you may do so once I have it up. Any donation large or small will go towards building a walled fort down here.

That pants-shitting moment when you spy a carnotaur in the distance, it sees you on your rock perch, scales the rocks, and then drops down into your base over your walls to eat your face off. Unbelievably, I managed to kill it with what few arrows and spears I had before it killed me. I finished it off with a hatchet.

Geez, people weren't kidding when they said trike is awesome for berry collection. Now that I have a stego though...

Also now that guns are starting to open up I've started crafting them. Yes yes better against humans than dinos and expensive to make but since I'm a short trip from "Death Mountain" IIRC and I have a nice convoy of a Parasaur (probably leave her behind for supply drop runs till I get a new raptor), two Trikes (mate boosted) and a Stego I can walk away with 200+ metal per trip, assuming respawns are decently quick. Already took down two Rexes with my pack so I'm feeling pretty safe.

Future plans are for my outpost/fort "Mothy Retreat", or some other corny/pun name, above Moth Falls (the old hut will be converted to a storage shed, which it practically is already). Probably improving my dino pen though my trikes and stego can take care of themselves. I may need to trade for a turtle saddle so I can start doing some underwater collection eventually.

I also have a few duplicate blue prints from my supply drop runs which people are welcome to. I'll check again after the restart but I think there is a Raptor Saddle, Medium Crop Plot, and Metal Foundation. Of course you can use any blue prints that are there but please put them back.

Thanks for that hint, I probably never would've figured that out. Still no sign of the PA server though (searching for salute your shorts on the unofficial server type shows no results, even with the option to look through password protected servers)

I take it theres no real plot or missions to explain those columns of light in the sky, or why a naked human with a crystal thing in my arm is on an island with dinosaurs. Its just gather stuff and tame dinosaurs.

Yeah, I'm not sure how long the restart takes but it definitely went down around 30 minutes ago. Still, playing on another server will give you an idea what to do and if you had really made a bunch of progress you could upload your character and transfer it at one of the obelisks (not available for official servers but it is for ours and other unofficial ones). We'll be sure to give you plenty of tips and places to stay when you join our tribe.

The only endgame thing is the broodmother which I see from the achievement. Otherwise I imagine we're in some alien zoo (or human science experiment gone wrong/right) where we try to survive, build homes and tame dinos.

Edit: Ha, other than the flooding in the middle (and maybe the food poisoning/cerebral parasites) this seems rather appropriate.

    @GaryO
Ignore the in-game browser. It is still terrible.

    In steam, click view->Servers

Then filter by game to find the "Salute your shorts" server. Add that server to your favorites in the steam server browser. THEN you can finally use the in-game browser to find the server with the favorites option.

    Also, behold the dino-garage:

    ii3arvfd27ii.jpg

This is just a side garage added on to the foundation of the lighthouse. The whole thing is suspended a story in the air.

Later I'm going to try and figure out how to make a multi-story parking garage with ramps and stuff inside.

On that note. Ramps can be incredibly silly geese to place.

I picked this up and messed around on a local game for a bit to get my feet wet. So far I really like it. Is there a "best" or "better" area to spawn in initially? I choose one of the southern points and sometimes it seemed that meat was scarce.

I can't speak for the other zones, but at least south 1 and south 2 were close to rivers. Fishing for coel in the rivers was an easy and safe way to acquire some early game meat. Keep your head on a swivel for mega piranha. You'll have an easier time hunting trikes and carbonemys once you've tamed a small pack of dilos.
