oh by the way. if we ever get tired of playing on the official Island (ie, we know where everthing is), we can use the Ark Dev Kit and create our own islandscapes.
The kit itself is a modified unreal engine executable, so there are probably some that are pretty familiar with it or can slide back into it.
The official island is mostly a singular land mass, but we can create archipelagos so that water routes play a more important role, or make a mountain range or cave warrens. We can make our own climates and weather patterns, etc. Make a ''newbie'' island so that players can get acclimated to the game/server, make it easier to find them to invite to the clans, etc.
just a thought, and the dev kit can be found by going to your Steam Window's Library dropdown tab and clicking on Tools and downloading the 37~ish gig folder.

I've been meaning to play around in the Dev Kit. I especially want to see what tools they have for determining spawns and stuff.

Woo, tamed my first raptor. Had enough raw meat to manage it alone, but a very gentlemanly person (@SutibunRi, I think it was) showed up on a T-Rex, roared at me, and then went hunting prime meat. And as a bonus, they gave me a set of metal tools! Super classy.
:edit: and now I've gotten a saddle airdropped by Suti.

Thanks.to the GPU efficiency updates, I've been able to play on the lowest settings with my surface pro 2.
Got myself to level 15. So yuss... Stone arrows all day. Not the fucking slingshot. At north shore there are some key schematics that I like so that will be my residence.for the time being, until I can make a ptera saddle. Thanks to @firewaterword for metal tools and a pike. I can make repairs, even if I can't make the actual tool.
I'm interested in getting me a sabertooth. I'm in the SW. I'm not sure where exactly they spawn closest to me, or if I should just go around the coast to the east and north.
There's no plan, there's no race to be run

Also shoutout to @Kalnaur for the trike saddle... i know have a bunch of narcotics to build my raptor army of doom! it made gathering narcoberries so easy.

I think they spawn further inland. Most of them I've seen are on the mountainside when I'm searching for metal. So find a mountain on your map and go for it.

I've encountered a pair on the northern edge of the east shore, no clue if that's common or just a fluke spawn. Especially since I live well south of there, was just passing through after a supply drop run.

I find most of the sabertooth spawns at the low/mid sections of mountains. Usually chasing down things in packs of 3 or so. My first taming experience with a sabertooth was not successful. I would suggest either baiting one down to the beach or dragging it there to tame it. Taming it in the mountains is basically a defense mission where you're fending off birds, raptors, and the occasional carno/rex.
Thanks again to @Grunjin@Shinimegami and Tipin for the Rex taming assistance! I've already got Herbie to level 19, and his max level will be 47. If my math is correct I should be able to get him over 900% damage without issue, and about 6K HP.

On the server I play on we've just discovered the location where we (more likely I) will build our large metal base, so I started looking at what-kind-of/how-much materials we will need for it. As someone who generally does the gathering themselves for building (everybody else is too obsessed with taming and exploring), the time it will take to gather up the materials is really daunting. I mean, just for 9 Foundation I'm looking at 450 Metal Ingots, 540 Chitin/Keratin, and 1080 Stone. 3-4 hours of metal farming later and I have just about as much metal as I need, and an hour or two down in a cave netted me about 400 Chitin. It feels like It's going to take me a century just to get all that stone.
Is there a faster way of mining than just chipping away with the ol' metal pickaxe? I heard someone say Anklyos break up rock pretty well but wasn't sure if you get the same yield. I haven't tamed one yet so I couldn't do the science myself.

The best way to get stone, I think, is to cruise up and down beaches and some mountain areas just picking it up bit by bit. It's best if you've got a mouse that lets you bind a repeatable key press though. Just hold the button down and run around - you'll get plenty pretty quick.
I picked it because it's cliffs/steep hills on three sides and has a large rock cluster that makes it hard for larger dinos to move around. It's defensible, basically. And this turned out to be a good idea because yesterday after getting my pens set up to one side, I go to the nearby river to collect rocks and metal and see a Spinosaur in the distance, clearly trying (and failing) to climb up there to get at something. Probably my dodo. (note to self, park dodos all around the edges as bait).
Of course, now I want a saddle for him, which means farming pearls, which means getting shark and/or turtle saddles, which means cementing compound, which means I need a better way to get keratin, which means I want a sabretooth. So I'll be prepping this week for a hunting expedition to the mountains to get a cat. And maybe a few other things too. (Mammoths/T-rex if I can pull that off as well, and raptors)
As far as my base goes, it still needs a lot of work, but before I leave I will be setting up an additional pen with the doors unlockable to anyone, so anyone in the area has a safe place to park their dinos if they need it. I also have basic crafting and metalworking facilities for Warboyz in the region.

@downer I would be curious as to that damage %. You gain 10% of the base amount when tamed per level. What was the base attack when you tamed it?
My numbers are off, I'm sure. I was somewhere between 70-80% effectiveness when I completed the tame (he was level 9). Can't recall his base attack, but I'll check the increase when I log in later.
I'm looking forward to getting a raptor and a flying mount soon. Then I'll probably do a tour of the various bases and outposts that have been established. I still want to build my home into a lighthouse, but only the lower floors have been assembled.
Ok, I think I have messed around solo enough that I sort of know what I'm doing and have an early game plan in mind. Going to try my luck on the server tonight if time permits. Are any areas of the island considered off limits as far as building goes? Don't want to accidentally build a shack someplace I shouldn't.

Not really, but try not to leave tiny one-square shacks littered everywhere. It looks awful.
Oh, and don't build a shack right next to a supply drop if you can help it. Right now it doesn't matter, but at one point anything too close to that spot would prevent them from spawning, and they could easily implement that again.
The main civilized areas right are the NE of the island and the SW.

Right on, I'm just going to look for a suitable spot and set up a permanent base there.

Yeah, if you're going to make a temp house feel free to demolish it after you have a respectable home base.
I'll follow this by demolishing that small hut near Mudd soon enough . . .
Edit: That said, it's always good to set up a temp thatch place to store your stoof before manufacturing a larger abode.

Not that demolishing old works also returns a bit of the materials back to you. It's not efficient by any means, but it's a nice return.
I wish there was a timer on that. Like, if you demolish it within 60 seconds you get 100% of the materials back. The amount of times I've dismantled something because the facing was wrong...

In looking at the questions asked, a "fix my fucking placing" feature is on their list to implement. Just not sure where it is on their list . . .

Set out to explore a little bit more around the east side of the island today. Found a spot with some raptors, managed to tranq and tame one! Then not five minutes, I got ambushed by a damn carno and the raptor bit the dust. Very frustrating.
On the up side, checked out the blue pillar area, and raptors seem to be plentiful there. I'll check back tomorrow and try to tame another.

I've finished moving into my new spot! I've marked it on the map here. (linked for huge)
I'm calling it Rocktop.

Anyway since he couldn't get up I drew him into shallower water and tranqed him from above. I wasn't PLANNING on owning a giant carnivore so soon, but it just kind of... happened.

You could easily use them for trade by just circling the island.

If nobody moves into my old place in say, a week or so, I'm going to go back, demolish the house, and just leave it as dino pen for folks in the area.
