I will probably buy a VR device when they're ubiquitous, required and miniaturized in 10-15 years, if they stick around that long

    I will never buy VR

Do any of these headsets work for people that have to wear glasses?

The Morpheus definitely doesn't look like it would fit over my glasses well.

VR definitely sounds like a thing you have to actually see to believe

But I agree with Lorne Lanning when he was like, "the build up and excitement around VR is coming from the creative and hobbyist side, as opposed to something like 3D which came from studios and theater owners wanting to make more money"

Everyone who's tried it, even the most skeptical, jaded sons of bitches in video games, has gone "this is fucking crazy"

And given that there's like five or six fucking independent companies producing their own version of VR, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a big thing at least for a while

Who knows what the blowback will be, or the side effects, or whatever

But it's not just gonna be a massive boondoggle like 3D was

Several big companies are going to TRY to make it a big thing, but that doesn't mean it will take off.

I just don't believe that many people are going to be interested enough to shell out a bunch of money for a device that shuts you off from the rest of the world. A lot of people just can't do that a lot of the time. Like, for example, anyone with small children.

And there are so many different head sets being made that I don't know if any of them will be able to carve out a big enough market share to stay afloat.

10-15 years seems like a really long time

If VR actually works I expect it to take off in like 5 years maybe in a major consumer way

The iPhone came out 8 years ago and look how ubiquitous smart phones are now

VR is absolutely going to be a thing, but I'm not sure it's going to define the future like smartphones do

It'll be a powerful device that has some cool games and some practical applications as well

VR will find its audience, but I would be surprise to see it sweep the world.

I still want one pretty badly, but I have almost no desire to get deep into VR gaming. I just want to throw the thing on for space sims and that is almost exclusively it. Booting up Elite Dangerous or a good X game if they ever make one again and feel like I'm actually in space sounds incredible.

It's possible they might include some kind of built-in diopter which lets you kind of dial in your prescription like SLR Camera Viewfinders have

    Shu Yoshida wear glasses.

If the face of the company wears glasses, you'd think Sony might have considered the possibilities already.

I think the tech is basically there and it had every bit of potential to catch on in a big way but I don't think that conversation even happens until we have a price.

I'm not optimistic that any of the manufacturers can get the price low enough to avoid sticker shock.

I've heard Oculus works with glasses on, and also has the option for special lens as well

Or at least, a devkit did. Dunno if they'll be in the commercial product.

I feel like enough people wear glasses that worrying about these things not fitting well with glasses is totally crazy

Like, these huge companies aren't going to sink preposterous amounts of money into this product, ship it, and then go all "Oh fuck we forgot that literally like half of the entire population wears glasses."

    It's not totally ideal

But virtually every pair of 3D glasses is made to have enough room to fit over existing glasses

Also 3d is basically a failure at this point so hey, maybe the fact that they didn't do a solid job of accounting for glasses is a contributing factor to that.

  • ButtersButters A glass of some milks Registered User regular
I'd say 3D is a failure because it was a gimmick from the start and doesn't actually add real depth.

VR/AR looks cool but I've read there are issues with it giving some people motion sickness so that could be another challenge for it.

A lot of it is going to come down to people creating experiences for the technology that don't have those problems. And people acclimating to the technology.

VR will take off because the human instinct to create and experience new worlds if fucking insatiable.

Pac Man's character is difficult to explain even to the Japanese -- he is an innocent character. He hasn't been educated to discern between good and evil. He acts more like a small child than a grown-up person. Think of him as a child learning in the course of his daily activities. If someone tells him guns are evil, he would be the type to rush out and eat guns. But he would most probably eat any gun, even the pistols of policemen who need them.

    I will never buy VR

No desire to strap a thing to my head and no desire to shut out the outside world

Yeah that's what kills it for me. It's already a big enough commitment these days for me to say, sit down and play videogames for a couple hours in a row, but at least I can still respond to texts, emails, etc, while I do that. With VR I basically have to be comfortable setting aside large chunks of time for games and also going into a zero communication bubble? It's a real deal breaker.

To me that's the biggest appeal

Just a solid chunk of time divorced from the noise around. Complete focus on one thing without endless distractions from all angles sounds like heaven.

I wouldn't want itnall the time, but as a getaway it sounds awesome.
