Home media server for music

At the moment I use PLEX Media Server on my home desktop and we have this set up to be able to stream video to my families phones / tablets / laptops both on the local network and via the internet. (So we can cast to a friends Chromecast if we are at their place for example.)

I would like to be able to do the same with our music collection, and while we love the way that PLEX works for video content we just don't like the way it deals with Music.

Are there any programs out there that do a similar thing as PLEX but for music, or is there a way to share music via PLEX but have it play in something else (Winamp for example)?

Have you looked into Plex's music setup recently? I know they just did a huge update that was focused on the music part.

I've been meaning to try it out, myself.

I have been using Logitech Media Server, previously know as SlimServer, combined with Squeezebox clients for years (there is both hardware and software clients). It is free unless you want specialized hardware players.

@Dr_Keenbean - Have PLEX Theatre and PLEA Server both fully updated, threw in some music last night just in case there was something new I missed but it still looks the same to me. If I want to a play a single album or everything by a single artist it works fine, but if I want to junp around and make a playlist the interface is just just clicking with me.

@bowen - Subsonic seems like it will do exactly what I want. Not had a chance to install it yet, but should be able to give it a try tonight

@khade97, do report back when you find a good solution, as I've been thinking about trying something like this as well.

I think the Plex audio revamp is only for Plex Pass (paid) users right now?

@Jebus314 - subsonic that @bowen suggested did the trick for me. Just using the web player at the moment but supposedly you can hook it up to external players.
