My notable pulls so far have been 4*Effie, 4*Corrin(f), 4*Tiki and 5*Fae. I'm running Team Mostly Dragongirls at the moment. If I get a good ranged unit they'll likely replace Corrin. Tiki kinda fits the bill since her Lightning Breath can counterattack from any distance.
Looks like nothing outside of the gacha itself in the actual game is RNG based? Holy shit give me a mainline Fire Emblem game-mode option that lets me have these predetermined level ups and 0-RNG combat.

Eh, if you're going to reroll, do so until you get a couple favorites. Don't go nuts worrying about their star rankings, because anyone you draw will be 3 stars at minimum, which are all better than the base characters in the game.
Side note, I didn't get very great characters. I did get a 5 star Robin, but it was the inferior male Robin, which makes me sad Most of the rest were characters I've never heard of, or like... Stahl....
OK, the factory reset fixed my problem and I'm up and running with FE. Just did the 2 intro missions with Anna and am at the main screen. Had to stop, but I hope they explain all this rolling and rerolling you're all talking about. Don't wanna waste my orbs.

Some people want 5* units or a particular unit, so are resetting their data and playing through the intro again until they get a set of rolls they like.
It's not required at all, and I'm doing perfectly well with some 4*s, since if you link My Nintendo and get the 10 free orbs and play a bit, you can accumulate 40 orbs fairly easily for a pair of 5 pulls.
I rerolled until I got a unit I cared about, one that I voted for on the ballot for example. Sorry Jagon and Mathew but I really don't want you guys being my starting pulls. Luck just so happened to grant me a 5* base, which was Lucina.

On the one hand, I'd like a Healer. On the other hand...my current team has a nice spread of a blue, a red, and a green, with two of them being Air Cavalry and so far it's perfect.

Another five draw since I got the orbs together. Finally got a green unit on offer, and it was 4* Beruka which is a nice bit of mobility. Also snagged a 4* Matthew (ranged!), 4* Hana, and 5* Tiki. My cup overfloweth with red people.
I got a 4* Effie and she also only moves one square. However she gets a support move where she shoves a friendly unit two squares. Her and Hector would make a fun team, boosting each other's movement
I got a 5* effie...so far every hit on her has done 0 damage and shes done 20+ back. Shes slow sure..but I like ma women with big pink armor.

Anyone mind explaing what the deal is with banners? I kinda went in blind but I'm seeing a lot of talk about them.
Is it just a matter of different rosters of characters to summon? And if so how do you change it?

Different rosters of characters. Banners are a way of also introducing new characters in a gacha game. When a new set comes out, a new banner will be rolled out containing them (plus whatever else they decide to put on there), with, usually, higher rate ups for that specific banner.
Decided to take 20 orbs earned from story battles and try another 5 pull. Got a 5* Tiki, Marth and Cain. So I have 1 green (Hector) and 3 red heroes (these pulls) as my best team now. Very lucky, but red heavy!
I have absolutely no idea what a Fire Emblem is, but I like Nintendo stuff, and I like my phone, and I like free things to twiddle on the bus.
Will the utter lack of familiarity with FE bite me here, or as long as I know from the gacha kind of games, star ranks, etc I should be fine?
Did you ever play FF Tactics, or Shining Force? As long as you understand the basic idea of moving guys around a tile map to hit other guys, you should be fine.

Stahl is growing on me. He has a support ability, Shove (I think), that allows him, when adjacent to an ally, to swap places with that ally. This ends his turn and he can't attack after doing so. At first I was lukewarm on something like that.
But then I started to get creative: see, it ends his turn, but it doesn't do anything to the ally's turn. So suddenly I'm using him far more often to run ahead of my ally, turn around, and then Shove my ally forward so that they gain 1 free square of movement towards the enemy line. Which on a map this small and with the AI so particular about ranges and positioning, results in me getting free attacks when otherwise I'd often be just 1 tile out of range.
Hrm, the FFRK part of my brain is telling me to horde these orbs like my life depended on it because f2p currency is precious and later banners will be better, but i kinda wanna do a 2nd 5 pull just to get some good green and blue characters, i only have the 2 starter ones.

Yeah, I got him as a four star and he had the special tome equipped, but lacked any of the abilities.
From what I can tell three star is the base unit, but can have variations like an upgraded weapon or slightly higher stats.
Four stars will have an ability or advanced weapon.
Five stars has both an advanced weapon and an ability.
