I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.

Yeah, Serious Sam as a Mage is in the ballpark for Ziggurat. Levels are procedurally arranged from a variety of rooms with a variety of challenges to be defeated before the doors open and you can move on. It's pretty hard, looks good and is easy to pick up and play.
@GnomeTank gifted me Metro Last Light. Many thanks man!
I'm glad to see a few people getting Metro Last Light. That is one of the most surprisingly awesome games I've ever played. It is so immersive and intense in a way that I haven't experienced since Half Life 2. The voice acting is great, the pacing is perfect (after the first bit), and the gameplay is, well, sufficient. Though I gotta say that if you find you aren't getting into to it in the first few hours just push on a little further. I couldn't really get into it and put it aside for a few months, but when I pushed through past the point where you are driving a trolly thing it sucked me right in and I played it a few hours a day until I beat it.
are the originals still worth playing, or should I just get the Enemy Unknown complete pack?
The originals are still worth playing.
If you like your games to be puzzles that you solve with very little spoonfed information, with mistakes equaling gruesome death, then you should start with them.
If you want pretty graphics and useful-but-unobtrusive tutorials with your gruesome death, you can skip to the newer stuff.
The originals have a lot going for them and have aged well, but they're not necessarily "for" everyone.
Thanks so much @Berylline! Some sci-fi mystery is right up my alley and I seem to remember Pixie speaking very highly of this awhile back. Also, hahahahaha! Costume hit already! I can't wait to see that stream.

I found the originals "not for me"; they are in the vein of having to be in the mindset of a PC gamer of their time, which I was not.
The new material, however, was grand though sometimes frustrating amounts of fun, and you should totally jump on it. Hell, the complete pack for $10 should hold you until the sequel comes out. At least.

There are a lot of things original X-Com does that no game even today does, even Firaxis's XCOM (except those that were specifically meant to replicate it to begin with -- i.e. Xenonauts). It's an extraordinarily compelling game, but also extraordinarily obtuse and unforgiving of beginner's ignorance. Also the battlescape UI is something H.R. Geiger has nightmares of.
My thinking is do get the Enemy Unknown complete pack for an excellent, thrilling game that is much less arcane but still challenging if you want it to be, and take a look at the older games to see where it all came from if you really are hankering for more. They're similar yet unalike at the same time, if that makes any sense.
Trying to pry the details of a wanted game out of @Berylline backfired, and now I own a copy of Oceanhorn as a result.
This is the notzelda game that the thread was talking about a while ago that looks really freaking awesome, so I am stoked. Gonna try to pick up a cheap controller tomorrow and give it a shot. Thank you Bery!
Everybody seems to love The Binding of Isaac, but I don't know if I can get past how unappealing the look and subject matter is to me. I really don't like to be creeped/grossed out by the media I consume. Anybody with these types of reservations end up getting the game and loving it anyways?
The game is awesome, but I can't imagine enjoying it if all the poop/piss/blood/religious imagery bothers you a lot.
It doesn't bother me exactly, but it certainly does nothing for me. Well, it ensures I tell almost nobody in my life I spent 200 hours playing it. It does that.
@youngfrey and @chuck steak : You can take this with as much, or little, grains of salt and ymmv's and the like, as you will, but i would say that Rebirth is the best game as game (that is, as opposed to game as art, or game as story) that i have played. It's extremely well designed, plays as smooth as fecal matter through waterfowl's GI tract, and is very, very fun. Probably the only game i've really wanted to come back to and play again, and again, even after reaching this milestone yesterday:
i mean i got up past that in Disgaea4, but that was really just a bloody-minded grind to get the PlatTrophy for it, i had lost most all my sense of enjoyment well before that point. Rebirth hits all kinds of sweet spots for me: it's not tedious, or excessively difficult, but it does harshly punish repeatedly stupid play. There are some "(almost) i win" items, but most everything can be put to some use, and the synergies between different things can make each run (relatively) different. A decent run can usually clock about an hour, so it's not hard to slot a bit of play in here and there. Plus, as much as people like to point out all the poop, it has a quirky, almost cute, style to it; a very good example of what can be done, and done very well, with pixel art.
The only thing i would say against it is its treatment of Christian images/themes, if that is something that would honestly bother you, then you'd be better off with something else. Still, aside from that i cannot recommend Rebirth highly enough.
Buy eeeeet!
Damnit, that all sounds great, and now I don't know what to do! I'm not religious so that wouldn't bother me, it's just the grossness that turns me off. I wish there was a mod that re skinned it with puppy dogs and unicorns and rainbows or something.
It's really no more gross (to me, though bear in mind i used to work in a funeral home) than some of the more gribbly enemies you'd see in, say, Final Fantasy 4 or 6. The fact that he's run with a pixel style keeps things more on the goofy side of things, than the hideous side of things.
I'm thinking I'll probably grab the EU complete pack, and then UFO Defense at some point later in the sale. Between the store page and your descriptions, it sounds a little like Jagged Alliance 2 with aliens, and I love that game

Finally caught up!
Just a reminder for those who want to enter either the steamgifts giveaway, or want the chance to win a $20 steam wallet code. If you're interested in the steamgifts giveaway, try to enter as soon as possible because the website usually gets overloaded during mega sales. I only just now remembered myself, so I'll probably have trouble with the website as well when I check the winner.
I actually ended up having to re-input the entrants into my raffle spreadsheet because I was making it too hard for myself. I hadn't been using a table so I couldn't sort from a to z to see the duplicates and I also was deleting these duplicates as they came along, instead of waiting until the end of the raffle deadline. Fixed now and will remove the duplicate names on the 19th/20th.
EDIT: Ok so I have a $20 USD Steam Wallet code and guess what? Everyone who's donated at least $10 up until the end of 19 June 2015 (US time zone? I'll just go off by the final donation on that date in the charity drive's spreadsheet) has the chance to win it!
This raffle will be determined by using the excel formula in this video, unless someone can recommend a better alternative.
This is my first time doing something like this so I really hope I don't screw this up. :bigfrown: I already checked in the steam support that the steam wallet code should be redeemable in all regions, just that it will be converted to the user's store currency, so there's that I suppose.
Everyone already knows this by now but @Berylline is awesome. Another victim of her classy rampage here. She got me Blackwell Epiphany, the final game of a series I've enjoyed so far and thus completing my collection. Thank you!
Got excited Tales from the Borderlands was on sale. Bought it. Then realized that is NOT the new BL prequel but instead the story based game. I got my names all mixed up. *forehead slap*
Ah well, I did want to play this at some point, so hey.

I forgot the first rule of Steam Sale: Don't mention things you want, even in passing. I was asking about Pandora: First Contact, and this came up in the course of discussion.
And speaking of courses, now I must plot one . . . for adventure. Thanks, @Mackenzier! :heartbeat:

It seems like you get a card the first time you play, then after the first boss, but nothing after that.
My game is now at level 51, and aside from just getting stronger, there doesn't seem to be any more sale related rewards.
Well, strike that, the boss kill unlocks still is in progress, so I suppose that's a reason to leave it running...
But there seem to be no more cards to earn from it? Or at least today?

You don't. Just play it. You can earn up to 3 cards per day from playing, at random intervals.
Enough people play, more deals are unlocked the next day.
Otherwise it's the usual sale; spending money earns you sale cards, badges earn you sale cards, etc.
The higher your badge level, apparently, the stronger you can begin the next day in the mini game, but otherwise it's not required at all.
