It's a better da:o in some respects.
It suffers from da:o's flaws as well, though.
On a sidenote, a question for those lore heroes:
sooooo I'm not entirely sure how ciri is connected to Yen.
From what i can gather Geralt asked for a "surprise" customary reward which turned out to be a child.
Takes said child to Kaer Morhen and trains Ciri as a witcher.
I can see the father figure thing going on there.
But how the hell does Yen figure into it? The game sells her as a motherly figure but the character bios don't answer my question.

The books cover that part. Triss convinces Geralt and friends that they're not equipped to raise Ciri because of her crazy powers, so they send her to Nenneke's temple and Geralt asks Yen to teach her how to control her powers. Yen basically takes over raising her while teaching her magic and eventually regards her as the daughter she could never have (being sterile and all). So Ciri was actually trained to be half witcher, half sorceress.
I've only read some of the books so I have no idea how she got her crazy planeswalker abilities. Last I read of her she had lost her control over magic after trying to draw power from fire and joined up with a ruthless gang of bandits kids, of which she became the cruelest. Curious to see how that panned out.

on that point, regarding gennefer .. Yenalt ... whatever
I don't see the attraction. at all.
Or rather I'd understand if it Geralt runs after women that are bad for him but uurrrrrgh Yen is just so self-absorbed. She doesn't treat anyone as an equal. From a game POV I suppose the djinni spell explains it but why would Geralt ask the djinni to do that in the first place?!
I fucking hate that I have this stupid game breaking bug with this shitty brick. I can't progress because I can't use this stupid brick. What a fucking cocktease of a bullshit fucking thing
Yen's not all bad - she genuinely cares for Ciri and tries to do the right thing more than 50% of the time... she's just not as cool as Triss IMO. I think the game does a good job of showing why Geralt and Yennefer are into to each other and also why they can't stand each other.
End of Witcher 2 spoilers:
I get the impression that the devs are on Team Triss to be honest. Talking with Letho about Yennefer at the end of TW2, he says something like "never understood what you saw in her, but I guess there's no accounting for taste."
The one thing I don't really like about Triss is her voice acting I think. She sounds too young to my ears, and is just on the edge of coming off as ditzy sometimes. Strange that the only characters with American accents (I think) are Triss and the Witchers.
i'm debating if i should free this spirit from the tree. it sounded familar so i checked all the books about and lo and behold, theres a book i found about how there were 4 ladies, a mother and 3 daughters yet the mother went mad the book claims... hmm i dont know. i went into the basement of the ladies house and saw the altar with the blood on it and then there is the whole thing with the dagger so im 98% sure they are killing those kids, because this is the hansel and gretel fairytale almost, the trail of treats.
but then im sure gran is anna and i dont want to risk end up killing her after whats shes been through. hmph choices choices.
Yeah that Northern Realms Gwent Deck I mentioned on the previous page has served me well, just finished all the Gwent: Playing Innkeepers and Velen Players added Roche and Yennefer to my deck and it's serving me well.
Hardly top tier stuff but if anyone else wants an idea here is the list:
Norther Realms: Tight Bonds
Leader: Foltest, Lord Commander of the North (clears all weather)
The nice thing is I've only replaced about 7 cards from the original deck you get plus changed the Leader. It could use some work but getting out all of my Blues Stripes (after baiting out their Scorch) is a thing of beauty.

That's very similar to my deck. I dropped scorch and added another warhorn, though. I find I tend to have the highest value cards on the board, so scorch was often a waste. Also, I find the AI often uses scorch on 6 strength cards and almost always uses it on 8+, so I'll usually use my siege units to bait it and then just use medics to bring them back.
-Early on I find getting siege Foltest the easiest way to win games.
-Keep a clear weather card to make sure you don't get rained on.
-Add spies and decoys to your deck as you get them.
-Frost/dragon combo is really important. particularly against scoiatel and monster decks (muster). Later on it's your first round easy win. I.e. play all the spy cards, decoy enemy spies, play those too, AI will likely pass, you then combo his front line and win with 2 cards.
-Replace weaker cards with hero units, spies, medics and siege units if going for foltest. Seriously, everything else can be trashed. as nice as blue stripes and reavers are, you'd have to bloat your deck to make them work.
I very rarely lose gwent games, and I run zero weather cards. Spies and force multipliers are the way to go until you have a good stock of heroes.
perhaps that's why you lose rarely ;P
I suppose pure hero decks could be beaten by muster decks, warhorning them and keeping a sacrificial minion out would prevent scorch/dragon losses.
Although the fact that you don't get as many copies of cards as the NPCs make me a bit weary of the idea.
Hero-strong decks are very limited in comparison to other deck setups, potentially
Outside of the Geralt and Ciri cards, every other hero can be skunked by a decent Muster multiplier on most soldier cards, especially after pairups or supports
The thing about heroes are that they're safe, but if they make up the biggest part of your deck then you're going to end up with some very serious limitations in terms of just laying down points
freed the spirit. something is nagging me about the madness bit in the book though but she sounds like the truth about the kid eating is true and she wants to help so maybe everything will be okay?

As far as Ciri's powers,
I believe the basic idea is that Ciri is an accidental descendant of an Aen Elle "breeding program", which involved pairing elves with talents over time and space in order to create offspring that grew stronger and stronger planeswalking powers with each subsequent generation. They wanted to create a child that could allow the Aen Elle to walk between worlds at-will.
However as they were approaching the final generations of this program with Lara Dorren, she rejected their chosen partner and fell in love with a human mage instead, fucking up their plans. Since then they've been after the descendants of Lara Dorren(i.e. Ciri) in order to try to breed them back into the elven bloodline.

i just met the ladies in the flesh. fuck it no matter what happens i made the right choice and im going to let all 3 taste silver. jesus.
I'm wondering how far I am into the game and how much I have left.
I just returned to Khaer Moen
and turned Uma.
so I'm to go recruit allies and summon the Wild Hunt to Khaer Moen
Cause I'm doing these quests cause they're about my level and I don't want to end the game cause they have game ending names
information!
the game becomes ALOT more linear after you start with ugly baby.
HOWEVER, there are several opportunities to go off and do side missions.
the last mission name I can think of is "final preparations".
And even if you're on that one you can still go off and do other things.

Only way for the
djinn to not destroy Yennefer and the town was for Geralt to make his last wish. But the wish has to be precise. If he wished for the town to be saved then the djinn might've destroyed all the people but left the town in tact, in order to kill Yennefer. Only way was to bind his fate to that of Yennefer so then the djinn it's freed and everybody is safe. The book even mentions Geralt notices Yennefers flaws, which they show in the game so well. (crooked shoulder, slightly long nose etc).

put down everyone involved, the spirit and the crones.

I concur. Triss is the superior sorceress.
The djinni wish explains everything, Yen can go suck eggs.
