Even with my current questioning of Moto, I think I'll pick up the Turbo 2 next week. Specs look good, and my wife has the Tubro now and it's pretty nice.
Plus it has motomaker and a 4 year no shatter guarantee on the screen.
My Nexus 5x just came in, which is my first smartphone! I would post some photos, but I don't have another device to take them with :P
So while I get this thing set up, what kind of stuff do I need for it? I assume I need a case, as I drop my old phone all the time. I looked in to Otterbox and Lifeproof, but neither of them make a Nexus 5x case. I saw the name Spigen tossed around as well, and they have these two. The slim fit one looks nicer, but would it actually protect it? The more expensive clear one is probably supposed to be hardier, but it looks kind of ugly and plasticky.
Do I need a screen protector like I did for my 3DS? I know the phone is supposed to come with some kind of Gorilla Glass but I don't know what most people do with their phones.
It's all subjective. I only use a bumper and no screen protector on my N5. The biggest thing for me is something that keeps the screen from touching the table if I lay the phone face down

A bumper? Is that like a rubber case? Or just a cover around the edges?

Yeah, just a case that covers the back and surrounds the sides. Don't really need a screen protector.
Spigen is a popular brand, and I've had good luck with Diztronic.
I bought the, aptly named I suppose, Nexus 5X case from Google with my phone and it seems very nice so far. It is very expensive compared to the few other available right now, but it's very well made and the cut outs are perfect. The ADOPTED Protective Case, also from the Google store, is a cheaper alternative, but still more expensive that the cases available on Amazon.

Is that the microfiber one? It looked interesting. I'm probably going to spring for that or the other. I'm hoping I can get away without a full drop case. Have you gotten it in hand yet?

Yeah, it's the microfiber one. I'm still waiting on my Project Fi sim to actually use the phone, but using the phone/case while getting everything set up it feels different but in a good way. I'm curious to see how the fabric holds up with regular use, but it feels similar to soft touch plastic but with texture. It feels like a quality product and distinctly nicer than the last few soft touch TPU cases I've had. I do think $35 is a bit expensive but it does feel like a much nicer case than the $10-20 ones.

So I had upgraded to Marshmallow without doing a full wipe and my phone had been okay under it. Still kind of sluggish and slow. I was leaning towards the upgrade to a 5X/6P line of thinking but I decided to just do the full wipe. Man it's so good again. I might be able to last until the next Nexus or something.
My only beef is that I rerooted to use adaway but now Android Pay doesn't work. Google Wallet worked so super good and didn't care if I was rooted. Why did they change it? Now I have to choose between ads and the convenience of NFC payments. Bleh.
it's because android pay api's are built into the system level now, as opposed to the old wallet being an app.
the root discussion is a pretty passionate one on both sides but, in my opinion, I'm 100% ok with root breaking android pay, because root is inherently insecure. Yes, there are superuser apps that are supposed to make sure that things wanting root access ask for permission, etc. But a rooted phone is a compromised phone, and thus the security of the Android Pay API's cannot be guaranteed by Google. And for something related to banking/monetary transactions, yea it needs to be secure.
Was wanting to check out the LG G4 at costco yesterday. They had it in stuck, but not on display. To quote the sales person "for every LG or Droid we sell, we sell 50 Samsungs"

My N5 has been sluggish since updating, too. I'm going to look into clearing the cache(s) before I move to do a full factory reset. I'll probably still have to do a factory reset because that's what I did when Lollipop showed up.
@Endaro@Cormac@MichaelLC The bumper I use, personally, is the one that just goes around the edges. My N5 has the rubberized back, so a case with a back cover doesn't add a whole lot of protection. This is the first time I've used a phone without adding a screen protector; and outside of superficial scratches (that you can't see when the screen is turned on), it's performed fantastically.

Well, yeah. Samsung's positioned themselves as the go-to Android phone. The salesperson is effectively saying the sky is blue.
And there are a lot of carrier/store politics as well. Some companies literally pay stores/carriers for better product placement, better training for staff as to have said staff push those phones more.
Speaking of, I snagged a Galaxy Core Prime on Saturday for the low price if nothing. I've been dorking around with it all weekend trying to decide if I want to activate it and make the switch from my current dumbphone or just use it as a "browse the web from my couch" device.
I haven't bothered with Android devices in a few years, so jumping right in to lollipop was interesting. I'm not sure if I'm going to install Marshmallow or wait to see if it gets an official update.
I have been pleasantly surprised how much performance you can get out of a modern "budget" smartphone. This is the typical quad core 1.2GHz/8GB/1GB and once the phone was rooted and all of the MetroPCS bloatware was removed it has been pretty snappy.
Also I was sad to see that the Play Store was still a disaster.
the grand prime will likely never see an update to 6.0. Samsung doesn't update budget phones. and the grand prime is actually not all that great because of the samsung bloat. Something like the Moto G will run circles around it because of the really light OS footprint.
What do you consider a disaster about the play store?

Like I get why it's just really annoying when the old way worked so well (for me) and this one is terrible (again, for me). I don't even really understand what they're gaining by doing it this way either. I didn't notice any times when I wanted to use contactless and it just wouldn't work with wallet for some reason.
I get that smartphones are more ubiquitous every day, but I think the right answer is to do what Canada and the better part of the rest of the world is doing; and move to Chip-and-PIN; *as well as* incorporate proximity chips into the cards themselves. We can probably argue security merits forever over whether smartphones or cards are more secure; but considering the number of times that users switch phones vs. the number of users that switch credit cards; that alone makes the case for cards.
My Nexus 6P has shipped. Looks like Canadian orders ship from the Toronto area. the ETA to Alberta is Monday.
Really hoping that it sneaks in by friday. With it being Halloween weekend and I will be out all night saturday I really want a reliable phone, which my 3 year old N4 is not. Last night, i could feel the N4 getting warm in my pocket, I took it out to see the battery had randomly dropped 25% in 5 minutes. the battery graph was hilarious. dropping at a normal rate, then boom just a straight line down.

My 5x has landed, definitely a different feel in the hand than my old phone. Thinking of waiting until my case gets here (estimated delivery of this Thursday) before transferring my number and activating the service, while it would probably be just fine in the intervening time with how much I actually have the thing out of my pocket, it shares that pocket with my keys.
On a related sidenote, it seems kinda silly that they wait until your 5x ships to give you the 50% discount on a case, since it adds that gap between phone arriving and case arriving.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Did you order your 5x as part of project Fi? I heard of some of those folks getting case coupons, but I would be interested if they offered one for just buying through the store as I never saw an offer.
Maxx 2 and Turbo 2 are official. Maxx 2 has a pretty good price. Which actually is making my choice between the two harder than I had thought it would be
The Maxx 2 is basically a Verizon'd version of the X Play, so the price isn't super surprising. Though it is kind of unfortunate that the battery on the Maxx 2 is actually smaller than last year's Turbo and Maxx.

Also, the name. Maxx? fuuuu
Sounds like it also comes with 5.1 which is rather unfortunate when they've had 6.0 for who knows how long. Granted, having the newest version of Android is kind of an enthusiast thing, but it's still puzzling to launch a high end phone that doesn't come with the newest version of the OS. How much of that blame is on Verizon and not Motorola/Lenovo may also be a factor.
Given Motorola's reputation regarding software updates is currently in tatters I would not buy a new phone from them. Especially when it's launching already a version behind.
yea, not having 6.0 is kind of unfortunate, but I am more willing to give a pass considering that it has only been officially released for about 6 weeks.
If we get to say, March of next year and new devices are still coming with 5.x, then ya, that's unacceptable.
So, while making dinner, a pot was banged against my leg, completely by accident, hitting the phone that was in that pocket. Paid no attention to it. After dinner, pull phone out to check messages. bottom middle part of the touchscreen doesn't work. After a couple reboots, still doesn't work. No crack/visible damage, but the digitizer appears to be busted.
So um. This was my 3 year old Nexus 4, which I've been using since my 2 year old Nexus 5 died a couple weeks ago. My Nexus 6P isn't due to be delivered until Monday. Maybe an outside chance I get it friday.
I don't think I have my 4 year old GNex anymore. if I can't find it, I may have to use my Galaxy S, no bloody 2, III, IV, 5, or 6. Running good ole' 2.3.x Gingerbread until friday or monday.
How many cell phone gypsies did you kill in a previous life to earn this curse?
I thought my N5 died as one last "fuck you." The thing was on its last legs. The N4, that's just cruel.
Regardless I found my GNex, so I'm currently applying a factory image to it. (4.3 is the last version!!) and will basically pray to some rain gods or something that the 6P comes on friday.

Core Prime, not Grand Prime (so even more of a budget phone). Plenty of their other low end phones got bumped up to Lollipop though (and the Core Prime itself launched with kitkat and got bumped to Lollipop), so it's certainly not out of the question.
Samsung bloat hasn't been an issue (although carrier bloat sure was), and it would be non-existent on 6.0 if I used a custom ROM or took a few minutes to remove it anyway. Also, it cost me nothing, whereas a Moto G would cost me an unknown amount but certainly more than nothing. I haven't decided which provider I'll be going with yet though.
The last Android device I owned was a few years ago (a then semi-impressive 600MHz single core ZTE running 2.3 Gingerbread). At the time the Play Store was a colossal uncurated diarrhea pile and I had hoped that during the time I was back in a feature phone phase things had changed, but they have not.

For my Z3 I got a very thin, tempered glass protector from eBay. It's really clear, and I don't worry about scratching my screen at all. *shrug*
edit: woooops. This was definitely in the wrong thread.
