My pixel arrives today. Which is good, because my already busted up old Galaxy+ now literally has a bend of about 15-20 degrees. The screen is completely shattered across that line in chunks of shards.

I am never buying a phone this size again, they are so fragile.

What is this I don't even.

Just got a new lease and the new car has Android Auto instead of SirusXM

About time they realized people want to control their own entertainment.

Anyway, having the maps pop up on the dash screen and having controls for my audio apps is a pretty cool qol upgrade.

Yeah, I had AA in a rental and will not ever buy a car without it. It has some quirks, but it is so much better than the built-in systems.

    A few main things.

    1. it allows assistant to use the mics in the car.
    2. it will push map data to the car screen
    3. it will read you text/messenger app messages and allow you to respond via voice (maybe only with pre-canned responses? I haven't tried it yet)
    4. it will let you use compatible audio apps with an interface on the car screen and switch between them.

Assistant won't already use the car mics? I think mine does, although I really have no way of telling. It hears me fine either way.

My buddies' car doesn't over BT but that might be on a car to car basis. I honestly didn't try it with it connected only to BT and not plugged in for AA.

either way my old car was from 2014 and I had to use line in like some savage.

Mine may or may not use the built in mic, but I have no problem controlling it using voice "play xyz on spotify" or "next track" or "go home" or whatever worked fine. Being able to push map data to the car's HUD would be super nice (if I had a hud, but yeah).

you can respond via voice with the full speech to text thing in android, it's not just canned responses.

I really enjoy having AA in my car, and it has cured me of the need to constantly feel like I should be looking at my phone while driving (which is super dangerous! don't do that!)

Nine is what I use for work and I love it.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3&hl=en

It sandboxes all of your work security policies inside the app. So if your employer sends a remote wipe command, it only wipes the contents of the app. If your employer requires a 17-digit alphanumeric passphrase, that policy only gets applied to the app.

It's also just a really good client overall.

(I don't know if it supports OAuth2, but it promises support for Google for business, so it should...?)

Odd thing going on with using my phone to store music for use in car stereo, are there any thoughts on why the last song in one of the albums I've migrated over shows up as its own album of one in Google Music? My desktop media player of choice does not do this to it.

:fakeedit: May have just spotted the problem, while the album title and artist name tags are the same, for some reason the final track does not have the album artist tag set, perhaps that is the issue.
:edit: yup, that was it. Wonder how that happened, this would have been ripped all in one shot, so everything should have had all the tags

So my super faithful Galaxy S4 I've had since shortly after it came out shit the bed recently. Apparently it's a super common problem where the internals of the power switch think the power button is constantly being held down, so it powers itself off as soon as you try to power it on.

I've watched like 8 youtube videos on how to fix it that consist of "unscrew the backplate, jiggle the power connector a bit, screw it back together" but my family (who's plan I'm still on because you can't really beat the rates) was like "WAIT, we have phone insurance, don't void anything, they'll take care of you." Insurance brand is Asurion btw, fuck keeping them anonymous after what they've been putting me through.

Despite my better judgment I've spent the last 2 weeks phone-less while jumping through hoops, struggling to even talk to human beings, having to get my grandmother to fax things, etc, only to get to the final step of the claim: "Great so your claim is approved, click here to finalize us replacing your S4 with an S6" with zero other alternatives.

AKA that time Samsung went "hey exactly how much of a conniption fit will our customer base go into if we nix SD cards and replaceable batteries" and the reaction was "WHOA NELLY HUGE MISTAKE LET'S WALK THAT BACK FOR THE 7 AND 8". So it's pretty obvious that Asurion has a stockpile of S6's nobody wants that they're trying to offload under the guise of "upgrading", despite the SD card slot and replaceable battery being the main reason I bought the S4 as my first smartphone.

Tomorrow I'm going to scream at them till I'm blue in the face about how they're cheating me, and more importantly, my family who was conned into buying this insurance. I put the odds at 10% of me browbeating them into replacing my phone with a real one, 90% repeating over and over "Sir, sorry, this is our offer and there's nothing we can do more", at which point I go back and do what I originally planned on, which is manually fix my fucking phone.

Never buy insurance for anything you're not legally required to.

There was a steam sig here. It's gone now.

I'd just take the S6 from insurance and sell it on Swappa/CL/etc to buy a used S7 or S8.

I'd rather scoop out my eyeballs than use a phone with Android 4.4 or 5.0 on it at this point, especially one that hasn't gotten a security fix since 2015.

I'll echo the love for Nine. It's what I use for my work email too. One function I love is that I can squelch all notification except those of specific types on whitelists (ie specific distros, clients, or just specific folders of the inbox, etc.)

My biggest gripe about AA is that it would munch battery like a monster. I'm sure it's mostly GMaps but I finally decided to take the app off my phone.

Granted, my car is a 2006. If I had some sort of integrated HUD, I'd make a better effort of trying to live with the app.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
My car is a 2010, and its only Bluetooth functionality is for calls (also contacts, of course), and showing the phone's battery level. In the UK now there is a 100% blanket ban on physically touching your phone whilst driving for any reason, so AA entirely being confined to the phone makes it useless for me.

So I might check Google Maps before I set off for traffic conditions, but while driving I'll rely on the car's own navigation if needed. Thankfully it has a pretty good system.

AA is definitely a good idea, though. One day in the distant future I might find myself with a car that supports it. Not planning on that for a while though - I only bought this car earlier this year!

The fact that this is apparently wildly inconsistent sucks, and is a reminder why I gave up trying to get Google Assistant to do anything and went back to Cortana. :(

so about the google assistant, what I've found is that if you have a google phone (nexus or pixel) where it's baked right into the firmware, it's 100% solid, and does everything you'd expect want.

After 3 weeks with he GS8 I think what I can say is that it's about 95% as good on an OEM/non google phone, but that last 5% when things just don't work like you'd think/want that you notice.

Question for the group here: my wife and I have a podcast that we have been recording on her iPhone (recorder plus) and editing on her phone or iPad. I'd like to look into other solutions that involve my phone. Basically I am in the market for a converter (m4a to wav or mp3 etc) and possibly another recording/editing app. Anyone have suggestions? I'm avoiding desktop options for the moment.

There are obviously a ton available, just curious if people have experience with specific ones.

Well, my Nexus 6P hit the floor one time too many and now I've got that spiderweb of cracks from a top corner.

I really don't want a top of the line phone, so something with comparative specs and screen would be nice if someone has a recommendation. I don't plan on getting one tied to any carrier.

Galaxy S7, HTC 10, LG G5, anyone have positive experiences with one of those? Is TouchWiz still a pain? I do like the waterproofing in the S7.

better idea is to give a price range/budget if what you're willing to spend. Easier to recommend phones via that way.

Of course, but I am a Swede and all electronics are more expensive here. A new Nexus 6P is about $460.

Avoid the LG G5, There have been a number of build quality issues with it compared to previous LG phones. The S7 is probably your best bet if you can afford it the camera is still one of the best in the market and the specs are really solid. Touchwiz is much much better than previous smashing phones but will still have a boat load of apps you don't want.

Other phones on the market that are Mid range don't match up really to the specs you are looking at with the S7, HTC 10 etc. the P9/P10 phones might be of interest or even if your budget could stretch to it looking at the OnePlus 5 or 3T if you want closer to stock android experience.

Not sure how it is going in Europe, but in the States if you bought a 6P straight from Google you can complain about early shut-down and crappy battery life and a get an out-of-warranty RMA without much trouble. It is worth checking out for free.

Got my new S8+ this weekend and very happy with it so far - the battery life is such a relief after the problems I was having with the 6P. I had a battery app on the old phone - are they worthwhile? Do they add anything? The one I had said you should never charge your phone to full as it damaged the battery - any idea if this has any basis in fact?

I would not use a battery app with a modern version of android. Nearly everything you hear about charging batteries is a myth, and either has absolutely no basis in reality or is based on other kinds of battery tech (IE nickel batteries and not lithium).

yea, do not use a battery manager app. They almost always actually harm battery life. Instead of letting the OS manage running apps and battery life, which it is actually very good with, all those apps do is fight with the OS. They try to close an app, the OS goes "no actually that app needs to be on in the background" and launches it again, and the cycle repeats forever, which actually drains the battery faster.

As long as I don't think about the payments for the next two years.

My weekend with this phone was amazing. AFter using an N4 for 4 years it was like a dream upgrade.

Also I played a shit ton of hearthstone.

I re-enabled Hangouts and Downloaded "News and Weather" because i was used to them (and my wife uses hangouts on her iphone), but should I just be switching to Messages? What's up with Allo or whatever?

Allo was Google's attempt at -- basically -- Whatsapp. I believe it's still supported, but it's not pushed as hard as it was a year ago. Related: I use Duo with my wife when I'm on the road. It works quite well and is a bit more reliable than Skype.

I have no idea what's happening with Hangouts, and I don't think Google does either. At one point, I thought they were trying to push people from Hangouts over to Messages, but really it's all just a mess.
