Well I'm due for a new phone but I'm in no real hurry to get it. If a cool new phone is coming out sometime this year (like the Pixel 2), I'll wait for it. I'm just out of the loop on what phones are available and what's coming out soon.

I got a new phone. I started seeing it up yesterday but didn't finish. I only logged into my Google account, updated Android and told it to import from my old phone. I assumed this would mean apps and calendar and so on.

This morning both my old and my new phone rang the alarm. The new phone doesn't show any set alarms in the clock app.

You may want to check out Android Central for a primer on what's current and what's coming relatively soon.

A slew of Moto phones just dropped, so there's a large amount of press discussing them atm.

Got my pixel XL but the yootech screen protector I got didn't go on right so I have a caseology vault but nothing on the screen. Yootech a good one, or any others I might wanna try? It'll probably be fine for a few days if I'm careful with the gorilla glass and all, yeah?

Yootech seems to get a lot of reviews. Try this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N2RVPW9/

    Use code 4BAS83RC and it's $1.75 shipped

Full disclosure: I am not currently using these for my phone (5X)

There were two clock apps on the new phone and the Android native app had actually synchronized the alarms.

Semi related: does anyone know a good app to dim your screen or the brightness doesn't go lower?

Damn, my pixel has these faint streaks running up and down the length of the screen, most noticeable on dark/gray backgrounds. But now I can't unsee it! Hoping this isn't too common of a problem and I can swap it for another. A pain in the butt though.

Say, anyone still using Android Wear?

Recently I've noticed that I can't control my music from my watch anymore, if my phone is locked. If I try to either change the volume or the song, nothing will happen until I open/unlock my phone. Anyone seen this before?

    It used to work fine...

My poor Nexus 6P has glass shards falling off the corner and I couldn't find another 6P for replacement, so I went for an LG G6 because I can't justify shelling out for anything newer.

I did a lot of research on this a while back, and consensus was that the IntelliGlass Pro was the best protector for the Pixels. Mainly because the pure-glass options have to stop early due to the curved glass edges, and a lot of people, me included, can't stand the gap between protector and case. I use the Intelliglass pro and a Ringke Fusion case on my XL and I've been happy with it.

Time to start the next-phone search in earnest. I've had an S6 Edge since it launched and will be paying it off until January (I used the old-style two-year contract plan with Verizon to pay it off), but I also dropped it (without insurance!) on the side of a volcano a few weeks ago and cracked the whole damn screen. First time I've ever done that and a real wake-up call re: insurance. Performance is unchanged and the shattered screen is... obnoxious but not an absolute must-replace atm. Everything is still legible and the screen actually hides the many glass-cracks when it's turned on. Still embarrassed to have done it.

I've been holding out for the Pixel 2 - my wife has a Pixel and we both really like it - but when I compare the leaks to something like the S8, I can't really justify getting something with bezels that are that huge when I can get an S8 for what will probably be a lower price. I'm not gonna do anything until the P2 is officially announced, but... for the first time, I'm leaning toward an S8. The battery life on my S6 has been unbearably atrocious (like... 1.5 SOT bad; multiple charges per day needed with moderate-to-heavy use; can't rely on it when traveling into the city; always have to carry an external battery; intentionally avoid using many features or using my desired brightness) - I've heard that the S8's is better (and I've heard that the S8+ has an amazing battery, but my hands and pockets are too small for that).

Anyone care to offer an opinion on the S8's battery life? Performance after a few months of use? Any other thoughts?

I've had the S8+ for a couple months now and the honeymoon is still very much on. I really love the thing. Battery life is fine. Unless I'm watching video all day it makes it through the day for me. I can generally recommend it.

A couple points about what you've said:

The Pixel leaks so far have only been for the smaller non XL version of the Pixel. From what we can gather, the 2 and XL 2 are going to be very different devices this year. The Pixel 2 looks basically like a slightly refined version of the Pixel, minus a headphone jack, while the Pixel XL 2 is supposed to be quite different, featuring the tall display ratio like the G6 and S8, and other as of yet unknown differences between the two models. The XL 2 *may* end up being a great phone, we just don't know yet.

I'd also point out that we're literally 5 days away from the announcement of the Note 8. Every leak so far is that it's basically the GS8 with a stylus and a slightly refined software experience. If you're looking at the S8 and are waiting a bit to buy anyway, definitely take a look at the note 8. It might end up being something you'd rather have over the S8.

Thanks for your thoughts, @wunderbar. You were definitely the person I was hoping would respond, and I regretted not tagging you in the post.

I've done a ton of research on the P2 and P2XL, but I'm thinking the XL is just going to be too big for me - ditto on the Note. Truthfully, even the S8 sounds big, compared to the 5.0-5.3 I prefer - but supposedly it's easy to hold and not too cumbersome. Still, obviously going to wait to see what the next few weeks/months of announcements hold before making the leap (especially because I need to keep paying off my phone until January anyway, even if I get something new before then).

The S8 is only marginally taller than your S6 Edge, but with substantially more screen.

it's actually damned near impossible to compare screen sizes when you start changing aspect ratios. As an example, I went from the Nexus 6P to the GS8+. the 6P is advertised with a 5.7" screen, the GS8+ a 6.2" screen. In physical size, the GS8+ is almost exactly as tall as the 6P, but actually narrower. I find the GS8+way easier to hold than the 6P was.

what I'd recommend for phones with the newer aspect ratios is going to a carrier store and holding them. It's really the only way to get a good idea, since screen size comparisons are useless.

Good advice. I'm going to take a trip to Best Buy (perhaps over the weekend) and get some hands-on time. I have indeed heard that the more narrow screen makes it much more comfortable to hold than something wider. The Essential Phone, for example, looks similarly great but seems a little wide and boxy to me compared to the slim S8.

Just got a Pixel XL, coming from a Nexus 6P.

The 6P was a little cumbersome at times but I've always been comfortable dealing with that because I love having a big screen. The Pixel XL is no trouble at all. It's slightly smaller than the 6P and feels great to hold. The rounded edges make it feel much smaller too. It really doesn't feel like a big phone.

Related: I think I hate the little screen cutout for the front camera module on the Essential phone. I'd rather have just a tiny bezel to fit the camera and all the sensors than that weird cutout. It looks awful on brighter screens.

In what regard? User experience (like signal/call quality) entirely dependent on carrier & location? Or is it because so much of it is subjective to the person writing the review?

Yes, that. But what made me post it was reading a Onetouch 5 review that spent the first several paragraphs complaining that the 5 was too much like the iphone 7 and lacked originality. In what world is that a concern for any consumer?

I do agree, there are too many "reviews" that basically are just bashing sessions because X phone is too similar or not like the Samsung or iPhone flagship. I remember one youtube review was literally 20 minutes of bashing why its not like the iPhone 6s.

I do like some aspects with reviews looking at real life usage/camera quality etc. However most useful experiences are from this thread.

this is where subjectivity comes into play in a big way though. I'll bet that for a large subset of people who would actually be interested in buying a oneplus 5, the fact that it is almost exactly an iPhone clone would actually be something they care about.

There's a venn diagram here. I would say that the demographic of people who actually read phone reviews on the internet, and are interested in the oneplus 5 is a very small demographic. We aren't talking about a phone that you can go buy in a carrier store here. My mom isn't looking at a phone review website, she's going to the carrier store and buying whatever she thinks looks the best for the money she's willing to spend. She's not the target demographic. The person who is interested in the OnePlus 5 is, usually, a very different person. They're likely already a hardcore android fan, and the hardcore android fan is more likely to be anti-apple, which means that for a large segment of the people who are actually going to read a review of the OnePlus 5 on the internet, that's actually probably important to them.

Remember, sites like Android Police, Android Central, etc all have and know their specific audiences, and are likely to tailor their coverage on specific devices to the audiences more likely to actually be reading it. They are businesses, and they need to make money, which means creating content that they feel is most likely to get the most eyeballs. For specific devices, yes that means going into things that a person might go and say "well, I don't care about this at all" but the reality is that they wouldn't be writing it if their audience/demographic as a whole didn't care

I thought Samsung faced a really uphill battle in convincing people to buy a Note 8 after the exploding battery debacle of yesteryear, but it looks like people have mostly moved on, which is a good thing for Samsung (as long as it doesn't happen again).

Presumably, the S8 is down to $575 unlocked because Samsung/consumers know that the Note 8 announcement is coming. Does that mean the price might actually go down even further to move units (i.e. a flash sale over the next few days)? I saw a post on Amazon suggesting that the S8 would refer to normal price on 8/26 or 8/28 or something, but I see no other backup for that.

$575 for a $700+ phone is already pretty good, but if they dropped it to $500 or less, I might have to impulse-buy.

One of the reasons I prefer Android Central and Mr Mobile is because they tend to hold close to phone specs during reviews, without getting too subjective. Admittedly, I think they go way too into the camera specs; though that has more to do with my stance on phone cameras in general (which is basically the opposite of @wunderbar ).

Who here has an LG G6? I've been thinking of upgrading from my G5 because it's been heating up a lot lately (might be avoidable on my part though) and the screen burn is getting annoying. I've been using the wide angle lense a lot on my G5 and was wondering if it gets better on the G6. One of the many complaints I see is that it doesn't have a notification light, but I don't know how important that is to me? One of those.... "Don't know how much you'll miss it until it's gone". Another complaint I see is that the front facing camera got nerfed. Don't use the front facing camera too much to be honest... But then again..... will a lower quality picture bother me?

I have a G6 now. Here are some thoughts just quick.

-It feels fast and has a good screen, and so far the UI and the settings have not been counter-intuitive.
-Using LG Mobile Switch to send over saved data etc. from my old phone felt like a dumb imposition at first but worked out well
    -Water resistance is nice
-Setting things up felt quite simple
-LG's proprietary software has not pestered me so far
-Value for money, at least here in my country
-The headphones that came with it are surprisingly non-shitty
-Some irritation with the smart lock settings - sometimes at home it still demands I enter the PIN to unlock it.
-I never liked having a notification light, so having small symbols on the dark lock screen to indicate what calls for your attention is a good replacement
