So, Splat Zones is a lot of fun. Definitely more intense than most standard games. Very campy, though, so it's not something I can put up with for too long. Not being able to play with friends is a pretty big strike against it, though (although I totally understand why it is that way).
My splatoon finally arrived. I felt sorry for all the higher level people who watched a level one slowly work his way up to level 4. At least I no longer look like a newbie.
fuuuuck arowana mall. i think all the other maps are alright but it's just trash, and splat zones makes it 1000% worse. it's a campy shit map that is mostly determined by who got the right weapons when it comes up.

I actually don't mind the splat zone version too much. Despite the campier objective, that little bridge on the left side makes it a lot easier to assault the middle. I hope they add it into the turf war version

the bridge is just a trap though unless you have a splat charger, since there is always someone up there with a splat charger or a jet squelcher ready to murder you while you plod over the grate at kid speed.

There's truth to that, but you can still get in if you have a bomb-type subweapon or if you wait for them to get distracted by one of your teammates coming from the other direction

I love the mall in turf war.
I guess it's probably not so good for rollers but you just don't take a roller along when it's in the rotation. And I haven't been playing rollers anyway.
I'm usually not too upset by the team I get saddled with. I probably lose just as often there alongside people with good weapons as with ill-fitting weapons. Even the rollers manned by good players get some effective whacks in, going over the center ramp. I've been splatted by them a lot.
I like avoiding the melee in the middle as much as I can, there are lots of good perches around to try to make a stand on. I guess you called that "campy shit" but it's really fun to lob stuff down into the middle or practice being a sprinkler from the enemy sniper perch. I don't see what's un-fun about that, maybe if you're on the receiving end of the pain too often.
I also like that it's one of the few maps that is actually good for chargers in turf war.
Having played ranked a bit more and gotten a bunch of wins, I now like the scoring system even less. Winning gives you a huge bonus on top of the 500 points (1300 for knockout, 1000 for overtime), so the 0 vs 500 point difference for knockouts is mostly just spite. The 300 point difference in bonuses is enough to make the winners push harder, they really don't need to shit on the losers as well.

My one frustration in Splat Zones are the complete twits who think they're playing Turf War.
Aaaaargh.
To be fair they might be trying to build up their special meters. When I have the Inkstrike and there's a lot of unpainted ground, I might paint a bunch of it to get the Inkstrike to use on a choke point or something if I feel we're not making good progress and I keep getting splatted before I can use it, and sometimes it really helps (other times it doesn't, and knowing when it's better to spend your time doing that than directly contributing is important)

So here's an interesting thing:
When you activate your special, your ink fully refills.
There is seriously an issue with guns when they all take like a second to kill a player. Why use a charger when a rapid fire gun kills quicker and you're not absolutely fucked if you miss a shot? Range?
Game needs damage falloff like WHOA. If I hit you at point blank with a blaster you should be splatted.

The blaster can kill in one shot, but you have to get the right distance. It's just such an odd gun to use. If you can get that distance right, you can kill everything. You can lock down a ramp better than any other gun. It's also a great painter, but only if you don't overlap the bursts... which means you are only a good painter when you are randomly painting deep in enemy territory and not going for 100% coverage.
Most of the weapon types feel pretty balanced to me in general, it's just that some weapon types are so much easier to use than others.

I'm rather pleased that I gotten the splatoon amiibos really easily cause I love these character designs. Just with Witcher 3 didn't take up all my gaming time.
Are the Splatoon amiibos rare? I thought it was just the three pack.
I got an Inkling girl on Saturday without preordering.

No idea. I just walked into a Target to get a three pack. They had a bunch of others that the guy was trying to get me to buy (jigglypuff and some others) and I was like 'nah', give me that three pack. They're decent figures, I'll admit.
It's annoying if you're in it mainly for the in game rewards, in which case you may as well go all or nothing with the 3 pack. And since that's the only way to get the squid...

While the challenges are neat, I don't really see them giving you a whole lot more mileage. You can definitely do without.

re: Blaster, I have found it is relatively feast or famine. You can't really engage people at point-blank, since the 1-shot radius is out where the main burst is. It is strong defensively when you can park somewhere you know people will be coming over a halfpipe lip or around a corner right into range. The paint coverage is pretty ok too, but the big hurdle for me is that your walking speed is slowed to a crawl if you're holding the fire button down.
The main problem is that the radius doesn't have the one-shot damage regardless of how close you are, so it's basically a charger with a set fire rate.
Yea, I decided to play with the blaster a bit, and unless you get the one shot kill your TTK is slower than pretty much every other gun in the game. So just play a splat charger instead?
or the .96 Gal, which has way more range, is more forgiving, and paints better.
also, in the ranked mode, it's really weird that the order in which you hold stuff can make you lose. if you hold the point for 50s, then your opponent holds it for 51s eventually, and then you hold it for another 40s for the rest of the game, you lose with a final score of 50 to 49 because the way the enemy capture penalty works. I'm not sure I like that, makes for weird incentives.

Nintendo seems to have actually made a decent number of the Splatoon amiibos, even the 3 pack. It's hard to find but there are probably still some out in the wild. And the boy and girl are definitely still in stock at a ton of stores, just saw them again yesterday. Less people want them individually because the 3 pack is the only way to get the squid.

Yeah, if you calculate it out...
There are 27 single player levels plus 5 bosses. Each amiibo has you replay 15 levels under different conditions plus the 5 bosses under those conditions as well. So each amiibo adds about 62% of single player playtime compared to the base game...not exactly new content, but at least more playtime. All three amiibo add about 187% single player playtime to the game.
And each amiibo pays 600 to 2000 gold per challenge, adding 100 more for each one. This adds up to 19,500, or 58,500 for all three. That's not exactly game breaking amounts of cash but depending on your priorities you might enjoy not having to scrape that together in multiplayer.
The amiibo content isn't 13 dollars good. The Charger Challenge felt more like a cheat code and while the money is nice you're gonna have to spend 90,000 adding a fourth slots to the amiibo costumes.
I bought the figure because it's a pretty nice figure at 13 dollars and I wanted to support the franchise a bit more.

That would be a waste of money IMO because none of the amiibo costumes have equipment slot exclusive abilities like ink resistance or ninja squid, and those are already showing their value and dominating online. But I get what you mean, if you want to use them at all just to look cool, you'll want the last slot.
Also about finally getting ink resistance...I know what you mean, I finally got one this morning, because I ordered it yesterday. It's just some red shoes that only had 2 sub slots, so I added the last one. Still the only shoes I have. I have some boots on order that also have them just to get some more skill variations with it. Really want to try it.

Yeah, the mall has really grown on me. It was initially my least favorite map, but now that I'm used to it, I find that it's a really nice change of pace. But yes, I agree that it's one of the most polarizing for weapon selection. If you don't have a weapon with some decent range for firing at people below you, there's not much you can do except charge straight forward and hope for the best.

That might be what I like most about it, it's a huge rush to break through and cause some mayhem on the other side, no matter how short lived it is.
I've taken to spamming "c'mon!" whenever I start getting into a better position, and some people have started taking me up on that with jumps. Feels great.
