Splatoon is the first new IP Nintendo since Pikmin...kinda. Actually Nintendo has put out quite a few new IPs such as Dillon, Pushmo, and so forth, but Splatoon is the first that's being developed by Nintendo dev (EAD, in fact) and debuting on the Wii U instead of handheld. It's also a third person shooter, something Nintendo isn't particularly known for, and the game is...peculiar. It's about humanoid squid kids who participate in a sport known as Turf Wars, where the objective is for the two teams to cover the arena in as much of their team's ink color within three minutes. This is done using a variety of ink-firing weapons like squirt guns and paint rollers. You can turn into a (defenseless) squid to quickly traverse through your own ink, even climbing up inked surfaces, but you will move slowly and take damage when in enemy ink.
HERO MODE
Hero Mode is the single player campaign, in which the player is recruited by Captain Cuttlefish to defend Inkopolis against an impending Octarian invasion. The gameplay is mostly disconnected from multiplayer: you have one weapon, and you can spend power eggs collected in each stage to upgrade your gear and wield multiple grenade types, but nothing carries from or over to multi. You do, however, unlock multiplayer items for beating bosses, and I do recommend you play it as the game does a good job of teaching you various tricks and is also really fun. It's very much an EAD game, and it shows with gameplay that wouldn't be out of place in a Mario title. It's short, but tightly designed and finishes on a high note instead of dragging on and wearing out its welcome. You can also collect scrolls in each level to learn Splatoon's backstory. WORLDBUILDING!
AMIIBO
The last single player mode involves the three Amiibos made for Splatoon. While the Inklings are pretty common, the Squid is only available via a three-pack which by the time you read this will probably be fairly scarce if not totally sold out. Each Amiibo unlocks challenges in the game that, upon completion, award a bunch of cosmetic items for use in the game. Note that these challenges are just replaying Hero Mode levels with specific weapons, and you need to finish the level in Hero Mode before you can attempt the challenge. Modes also unlock a special minigame for play while waiting for games to start along with an alternate skin for an existing weapon.
The Squid unlocks a speed run mode where you have to finish the level within a time limit. You, however, have your squid form replaced with a mighty kraken form that can glides through enemy ink with no issues and does a devastating spin attack when jumping. The gear it unlocks is a robo...suit or something.
The Inkling Girl requires you to beat stages with the Charger weapon, a sniper-rifle weapon that requires charging for more power. Your reward for this is a schoolgirl outfit with Splatoon S hair clip.
The Inkling Boy requires you to beat stages with the Roller weapon, a melee weapon with a powerful, but short range, paint fling attack. Your reward for this is a samurai outfit.
The Splatoon amiibos also have interactions with other games, but as of writing this they are very inconsequential and not worth mentioning here. Check out the amiibo site if you're interested in that.
MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer is the meat of Splatoon, and where you'll be spending majority of your team. Currently Splatoon has three multiplayer modes, but others are on the way. The modes are:
Battle Dojo: Two players try to pop the most balloons. This is local co-op only, and
it's the only local multiplayer the game has. Sorry!
Turf War: The objective is to ink more ground than your opponent within three minutes. This is the main casual mode for the game, and the only mode currently in the game.
Splat Zones (Unlocking Soon): A king of the hill mode where you have to ink specific locations to claim them. Claiming these zones cause your tickets to go down, with a team winning at 0 tickets.
Tower Control (NYI): A mode where players must occupy the top of a tower in order to make it move towards their enemy's base. Get the tower to their base or have the tower closer to their base than yours and win.
Rainmaker (NYI): No information has been given about this mode.
The game has a ranked mode which, when unlocked, will feature Splat Zones as its game mode. You get a grade that reflects your skill level in these games.
There's a variety of stuff to unlock. First are weapons, which come in three types: primary, sub, and special. Primary is your main inking tool, subs are gadgets like grenades or ink-spraying walls to block shots, and special is like a Super Attack that you can execute after inking enough space. Unlock other games, weapons come in premade sets and CANNOT be mixed up. Therefore, it is possible to have multiple iterations of a primary weapon with the only major difference being the sub and special weapon you get.
Primary weapons come in three types:
Shooter: Rapid fire weapons with decent range and power.
Charger: A sniping-esque weapon, with long range and the ability to charge for improved shots. This includes the Splating guns, which have tremendous fire rate but require charging up before unleashing paint for a few seconds.
Roller: Melee weapons that will one-shot anything it rolls over, and can also be swung for a short-range but powerful wave of ink.
Slosher: Literally tossing ink at people with a bucket. Powerful, and fires in an arc that can provide some strategic value, but the range isn't great.
Subs come in a variety of types:
Burst Bomb: A grenade that explodes on impact. It consumes less ink than most sub weapons, but the damage isn't the highest.
Splat Bomb: A grenade that explodes after a short duration, dealing heavy damage in a small area.
Ink Mine: A land mine that explodes when touched by an enemy or after a long enough period.
Disruptor: A grenade that deals no damage, but greatly weakens and slows the enemy for a lengthy duration.
Point Sensor: A grenade that deals no damage, but reveals all enemy hit by it for a period, showing them through walls, when hiding in ink, and on your map.
Splash Wall: Creates a small device that sprays ink downward, effectively making a wall through which enemies cannot fire. Will also splat any enemy that tries to walk through it.
Sprinkler: Sprays ink in a radius around it until destroyed or a new one is thrown out.
Suction Bomb: A grenade that sticks to a surface and explodes after a duration.
Squid Beakon: Drops a radar that allows your or other players to super jump to it by tapping it on the gamepad. Can be destroyed by enemy fire or if a player jumps to it.
Special weapons have several options:
Bubbler: Makes the player invulnerable for a few seconds. Can spread to allies by getting close to them.
Kraken: Temporarily turn into a kraken that can move quickly through all terrain (even enemy ink) and splat enemies by jumping at that.
Echolocator: Reveal all enemies to your team for a duration. They can be seen through walls, while hiding in ink, and on your map.
Inkstrike: Tap the map to launch a massive explosion of ink that will devastate enemies.
Inkzooka: For a short period, your normal attacks are replaced with swirling ink tornado shots that will instantly splat enemies.
Killer Wail: Fires a long soundwave that will splat any enemy count in its path, but does not leave any ink.
Wanna know when you unlock stuff? Check the spoiler!
You can also play dress-up with your Inkling by buying clothes. There's headgear, shirts, and shoes available (black biker shorts are considered the height of Inkling fashion). Gear also has slots, which has abilities that give you character a small edge. All gear has a default main ability, and then up to three extra slots that start unfilled but later gain a random ability by earning enough XP. You can also add slots to a piece of gear that has less than four slots OR reroll any ability on gear that isn't the main ability by giving a Super Sea Snail (or 30,000 cash at level 20) to the shady Spyke. More details on that later.
Wanna know what abilities dude? Roll that beautiful cheat sheet footage!
DLC & EVENTS
Splatfests are also a special event that happens every so often. You'll have the option to join one of two teams, and fight for your side for the opportunity to earn Super Sea Snails for gear.
The game has a ton of DLC, with a new weapon or map usually getting released every week or two. A big patch has added private lobbies, among other goodies.

This game is preeeetty rad
They are now my sole sustenance
Lotta good artists playing splatoon
I'm on in the mornings mostly but hopefully I'll get some longer play time on my next days off
Yeah, I was capping out at around 1300 until my last few games yesterday. I find it really depends on the map you're on, too. Sometimes I feel I had a really good round at the mall and only get, like, 900p.

I forget the name of the other one but the one with all the grated walkways
Esp since bizarrely you can't exit from a lobby without rebooting the console
I think my NNID is JohnHam but who can say for sure???
Let's splat
Stocked to see that they're already putting out levels and weapons, I'm only 5000xp away from level 20. Also that you can add/reroll skills for 30k in place of a sea snail.
Are they planning on dropping a map a week all summer long??

it's really good at covering ground but it does very little damage so you can't really engage other players which is a hard adjustment to make
still though i think i like it

Yeah
I ended up on a weird sleep schedule and playing this around 1:30-3am this morning and it turns out that's a good time if you want to play with 80% Japanese players with gear that has way more affixes than yours.
At least that's the excuse I'm using for every time I lost.

Is it worth it to buy the Amiibos as well?
You can get a unique costume for completing the amiibo's challenge
Almost bought the Wario and Pac-Man Amiibos while I was there but I held off.
My account name is Dr_Flamingo
you also get other minigames to play while you wait for matches if you beat all the challenges on an amiibo
