Do we have details on what exactly crossplay (PC/xbox) is going to look like? Aka what modes?
Has it been stated that if I preorder via Microsoft for example, does that give me a copy for PC as well? Basically it would be logistically easier for me to play from my PC (with a controller of course because I have kbam for shooters), but all my friends will be on Xbox1.
Gears of War 5 is a Play Anywhere title. So you need only buy it once (from a Microsoft ecosystem).
That's what I figured so that makes this simpler to some extent. I mean i still need to upgrade to windows 10 which is another story
Nose looks very different on that new pic. They might've just updated her face model, though. Could also be a weird angle/lighting.
Kinda looks like Reyna.
Well, It's definitely not Myrrah unless they gave her a major redesign. the facial structure just isn't the same.
see:
It also doesn't look like Reyna either:
Reyna's smile lines are more on a 45, while this character's is closer to a 60, though she's slightly smirking her right side is relaxed. Myrrah's is also closer to a 45. Kait's is also near a 45.
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
I almost expect we are going to get this (with respect to the image)
Reyna had/has a long lost twin sister or something and auntie is coming to collect. Clearly there is something familial and the locust/swarm want a queen and myrrah had some secret for locust reproduction didn't she?
I almost expect we are going to get this (with respect to the image)
Reyna had/has a long lost twin sister or something and auntie is coming to collect
I'm having trouble finding it now, but there was definitely brief footage of infected Reyna and Myrrah that looked liked it was a dream sequence. (Gears2 outfit Myrrah, even) That's the capacity I'm expecting Myrrah to show up in.

There are a lot of things in various media that screams
Dream sequence or some sort of genetic memory that is fucked up.
Book stuff potentially related
The book constantly harps on kait's nightmares. Then again who the hell knows whether that means anything. It's equally likely they just completely ignore anything that is said there
I'm saving Ascension (which is also the name of chapters in Gears 2 and Gears 3 ) for my PAX trip.
Anywho, beat Gears 4 the other day. I like this game, and I know people were mad about it not being ambitious enough, but in retrospect it feels actively hostile to the Gears status quo. It's like they looked at Gears 3 and went "How can we fuck with people who've played this game"?
You remember wretches? What if they could dodge to the side now. You hated the Kantus? What if we combined them with Boomers AND gave them the ability to not just ress their own dudes, but supercharge them as well! And good fuck, the Pouncer is basically a giant fuck you to the cover system. The Pouncer does not give a SHIT about your cover!
Game still has some amazing setpieces, I like where they advanced the story, and I hold that the final level is the best thing Gears has ever done
Being given a giant robot to fight with, who fights like a giant stompy mech, until you find the Swarmak and suddenly the game shifts back to a cover shooter where you're using WHOLE BUILDINGS as cover. Like, damn.. Whoever came up with that needs a damn raise!
One thing I've noticed in my playthrough is that these games all look fantastic. Even Gears 1, while showing it's age, just has some amazing vistas. The sad part is I often don't give them a second glance, as I'm busy playing the game. Which makes me feel bad for those poor artists who slaved away to make these games look incredible.
Finished Ascension. Overall it's fine. It didn't knock my socks off like the Karen Traviss books, but it was good. It didn't bridge the gap nearly as much as I thought it would, basically feels like the first part of a trilogy of stuff that happened between the two games.
Lore tidbits I found interesting.
So an interesting bit is Anya was the first, Er, First Minister and Jin was her protege. Jinn also spearheaded repopulation efforts, include fertility treatments which is how Anya (who was mentioned as being sterile in the books as why she wasn't part of the repopulation efforts during the war.) and Marcus had JD.
Jinn comes accross as almost fanatical in her protectiveness towards humanity. Trying to breed as many humans as possible, while also replacing any job that could be considered remotely dangerous with DeeBee's, including Thrashball. Sounds like the COG has basically become a society where most everything is mechanized, so the humans get to leisurely enjoy life and have as big of a family so possible. Seriously, have a kid dammit. BREEED! *ahem*
Conversely, she absolutely, unconditionally refuses to consider reactivatiing the Hammer of Dawn. There's also a plot about Jinn pretty much doing the "Ah yes, 'Reapers'" thing of, while believing the Swarm are real, believing them to be much less of a threat than they are (or at least refusing to commit to a strategy to deal with the possibility that there are more). I'm guessing that's going to be a running theme in the backstory leading up to Gears 5; COG incompetence making things more difficult.
Radio transmissions get fucked in the presence of the swarm, but they don't explain why. I'm guessing their telepathy works via organically transmitting RF.
Apparently the DeeBee's are designed for corraling civil disobedience and not combat, so they suck against the Swarm. A subplot is Baird, Sam and Cole building more combat savvy robots. Also, Baird has built his own JARVIS, and also so I'm sure nothing will go wrong there.
Oscar and Kait have thier reuinion here, but it ends with
Kait joining the COG to fight the Swarm, while Oscar takes two survivors from her village (the two kids she says were out of town during the DeeBee attack during the first act of Gears 4. Good pull on that comment, they make a whole main plot about that one little reference.) to go live at Riftwom; apparently an Outsider village built around the corpse of the Riftworm. (You can see it a bit in the trailer, and there's also a multiplayer map set there)
Outsiders aren't what the Stranded became (or at least not all of them) apparently, that would be the Pickers; half-crazed refugees who live on the outskirts of COG civiliation, picking through ruins, trash and whatever else they can. Also it sounds like the COG aren't the only government; mention of one of "Jinn's counterparts" from a settlement beyond "the borderlands". (Insert Gearbox joke here). I'm guessing this will be like New Gorasni or something; founded by the UIR remnant from the books and Gears 3.
Things I thought they might explain but didn't
Swarm being able to hack DeeBee's. They briefly mention it, but they don't extrapolate it out to the Gears 5 level of "oh, they turned them into horrible tentacle cyborgs."
Where JD got his fucked up arm, and whether it was a burn or a Swarm infection. JD makes it out of this book intact.
Things I didn't expect to show up here
THE DISK!! The Adam Fenix disk from the end of Gears 3 that we never found out what was on it. (Well, a book mentions the file names).
Anywho, I'm ready to see what Gears 5 has to offer.
Recently got out of Major Nelson's panel at PAX, which had Rod Fergusson going over the press briefing he did about Gears a few days ago. There's a lot of interesting info in there, and I wish they had been talking about it more, but there's some pretty exciting stuff there. No plot spoilers, but I'll spoil it because some of you might want to find out about these things in-game.
They wanted to add an upgrade path to the campaign, but didn't want to start doling out powers to the humans; so instead you upgrade Jack. There's multiple active and passive abilities you can pick for him, and even upgrade for him using stuff you find in the game. He can heal you, cloak you, buff you, fetch items for you and even take control of enemies!
"Player initiated combat". Inspired from Bioshock Infinite, it's the idea that instead of busting into a room and immediately being attacked by whatever is in there, you'll be given opportunities to see the layout of the fight before you engage, and the implication is that you might be able to see what the Swarm gets up to when they're not fighting. Sounds cool.
Open world areas; like, true "tackle this in the order you choose" kind of open world, complete with side-quests and even a MAP SCREEN!. A map screen, in a Gears of War game! Who'd have thought! Also mentioned that one of the things you an find are "relic weapons" basically normal weapons that have some sort of broken superpower. (Longshot that can hold two bullets in the chamber was an example mentioned.)
Gears allies: The more you play with the same person, the more affinity you build and it allows you to earn bonus XP!
At the end there was a Q&A, so I asked the question about Engineers having to split thier energy between fortifications and perks. Turns out the solution to that is Engineers don't get perks? Very interested to see how that plays out. Apparently you can still give energy to other players and even deposit it into the fabricator for the Engy to use for building and repairs.
Spoilers for cool thing that happend, but might sound like bragging.
After I asked the question, they said to come up front for a special gift. I figured it'd be like a weapon skin or something, but instead it was
Holy crap!
EDIT; Oh yeah, promotional character tidbit
They got Linda Hamilton to voice the Sarah Conner MP character!
all of that has me pretty excited scottsman. i've been seeing a bunch of headlines that kinda spoiled that stuff, but i am looking forward to it all the same.
re: book - i think it added some interesting background without impacting the overall main story. that can be a bad thing for many people i know but for me it was entertaining although my biggest gripe is that certain phrases just kept getting repeated. i'm sure that was a conscious decision to emphasize certain personality traits and other facets but it just was strange to me
Honestly, Gears 5 sounds shit hot. I was going to buy it no matter what, and I had hope, but I'm super hyped for it now. I'm sure the microtransactions will have me sighing in disgust, but they already sound better than Gears 4 (though that's damning with faint praise)
Hmm.. I have like 40k credits in Gears 4. When I get back I should just buy as many Horde packs as possible and just go to town.
Did they ever explain the currencies and earn rate of everything in more detail? All I can find it's the articles from like 3 months ago when they first announced it.
"For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men. Not women. Not beasts...this you can trust."
I'll buy Gears 5 exclusively for the singleplayer. I've played decreasing amounts of Horde mode since the Xbox 360 generation, probably peaking with the original Horde mode, as a matter of time, availability of games, and the other usual reasons. I genuinely think the mode is gotten better with each iteration, but I have less experience to base that on. I find the other multiplayer modes extremely intimidating, though the cooperative nature of Escape mode has me intrigued.
GOW4's singleplayer was worth the price of admission, as far as I'm concerned. It's still probably the best co-op story (rather than loot) driven third person shooter of the generation, on any platform. If The Last of Us had co-op...I think I might feel the same way, as crazy as that sounds to some. I'd probably still be willing to gamble even if it wasn't on Game Pass, simply because I've pre-ordered the first three sequels to the franchise (after barely following the original Gears of War prior to release), and it was worth it every time. I've never bought Judgment.
The Coalition (and those folks at Epic Games before them) have my trust to put out a quality product. There's something to be said about AAA titles in general being at worse "mediocre" and incapable of being genuinely bad (barring some bizarre misrepresentation of game features, a totally botched online launch, or both). There's too much at stake, everything is too logical, calculated and safe to actually be bad the way genuine catastrophic flops used to be. But I've liked every Gears of War game, Judgment excluded, enough to pay $60 up front. I fully expect to buy this despite having Game Pass until 2022.

As someone who played all of the series in co-op, I have a vastly different experience. 4 was easily the the worst co-op experience with the most forgettable story and characters.
I have low hopes for the horde mode, especially now we will be forced into choosing a character due to their class and perks. At least in 4 you could choose who you wanted, which made being stuck with a forced class bearable to some extent. But now they've gone all ham and haven't released any of the microtransaction info, which is and was a huge detriment to the horde experience. I'm glad it's on the pass to try out because it's the first one I feel okay not buying at full price.

Ouch. Well, you either like a game or you don't. I had to force myself to play The Last of Us until I realized what I really wanted to play was Rise of the Tomb Raider and that if I didn't like it more than 5 hours in, I really was't going to feel differently (and it's a terrible use of a borrowed console too).
But if you don't like the single-player experience, and you're worried about the multiplayer, it's probably a safe bet to pass on the game. I could be mistaken, but the overall attitude of this thread has been strongly favorable on GOW4's singleplayer campaign, especially compared to the missed opportunities of Judgment. But not everyone will like something (as noted above with TLoS).
So of course I'm gonna be out of town this weekend because fate hates me.
Really can't wait to play. Looking forward to everything about the game except the revamped escalation mode because I still have no clue WTF is going on.

No MT stuff for Horde mode; you just earn cards from playing the game
As you level up a Hero, you’ll earn new Skills for that Hero. Every single Skill associated with a Hero is directly unlocked via leveling up.
To level up these Skills, you’ll need to acquire duplicates. Duplicate Skill Cards are earned for every 5 waves of Horde you complete as that Character.
The higher the difficulty you play on, the higher chance you have of rarer duplicate Skill Cards dropping. In addition, you can also use Scrap from Supply Drops to craft duplicate Skill Cards to accelerate your progression.
Skill Cards and Skills are not purchasable with real-world money.
ok fuck it. its the last gears game I'm buying. I've been screwed over by gear4 cards and it looks like gears5 at least has the cards unlock as you level up, as well as being unable to purchase with cash.
(im curious if they are selling xp boosters which is the same garbage.)
but yea, i'm with @Lilnoobs with regards to the characters. why are they a set class?
Let me be a particular character that I don't have to buy.
Let me pick or build my own fucking class.
I don't have a lot of sway with my words since I'm buying this on steam right now, but I feel like I'm being bait and switched somehow...
I'm waiting for the red dead 2 funbux currency to strike, as well.
They never explained the numbers behind the not-microtransactions. Or a number of other things (at least in an obvious place on their site). Guess we'll find out soon!
"For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men. Not women. Not beasts...this you can trust."
if you drop for the 'ultimate' edition you can start tomorrow
I hope that the T800 has good skills in horde because I want to be an unfeeling killing machine.
but Fahz as a sniper is a good 2nd pick with wallhack sniping

Yeah, I read that but didn't really answer my questions when first released. A large issue was the ridiculous grind for skills and perks you needed due to their stupid drop rates and earn-able gold collection rates (so you can buy stupid packs for chances). The links don't really address the progression system. Is it just like gears 4 but now you can't buy the packs but need to grind it all out? That doesn't really fix the issues that made it so stupid. But the game is out now, so here comes all the answers. Here's hoping!

Game is pretty as fuck on PC and runs smooth as butter on the Windows Store version. It's a superbly optimised game which is honestly really refreshing right about now
I played Gears 4 entirely on Xbox, so I was super curious as to how Gears would feel on PC. That said, I played literally hundreds of hours of Mass Effect 3 and this seems to handle remarkably similarly to that. One massive difference is you can assign separate keybinds for roadie run, dodge roll and stick to cover, which is honestly incredible. Thanks, march of technological progress!
Would there be any technical difference between Windows Store and Steam versions? I got 4 on PC and it took forever to install, then managed to lose the entire installation so I had to download it again.

You still have to make an Xbox Live account and the Steam page says it's cross platform play, so I don't think there's a technical difference.
Obviously if you want to play it through Gamepass, you'll need to play it through the Windows Store.
I'm going to a 6pm showing here in CA of IT chapter 2 and getting out just in time to get some quality gears time in before bed lol I haven't touched my XBoX since the tech test and was seriously starting to question why I'm still paying for game pass ultimate, but after all they hype, the downer that gears4 was. I legit cant wait to play this again.

re: book - i think it added some interesting background without impacting the overall main story. that can be a bad thing for many people i know but for me it was entertaining although my biggest gripe is that certain phrases just kept getting repeated. i'm sure that was a conscious decision to emphasize certain personality traits and other facets but it just was strange to me

Hmm.. I have like 40k credits in Gears 4. When I get back I should just buy as many Horde packs as possible and just go to town.
That's it. That's the joke

I don't really have any desire to root for underdogs. I hope they crush every event, although I am glad I didn't buy an optic jersey

Really can't wait to play. Looking forward to everything about the game except the revamped escalation mode because I still have no clue WTF is going on.

Microtransaction stuff is here:

No MT stuff for Horde mode; you just earn cards from playing the game https://www.gears5.com/horde-explained

Now if microsoft and Sony would just release a ui update to keybind the controller to the keyboard or any input device.
I shouldnt have to look at some dubious website to download a 40k program to do that for me....
I have an elite controller so there are 4 paddles that I would like to assign to my keyboard voip button, a couple of macros and something else.

You still have to make an Xbox Live account and the Steam page says it's cross platform play, so I don't think there's a technical difference.
Obviously if you want to play it through Gamepass, you'll need to play it through the Windows Store.
