STERLING, N.Y. -- Thousands of dollars worth of drugs and more than $40,000 in cash were seized by police during the FolkFest music festival at Sterling Stage in Oswego County.
The New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team went undercover at the music festival, which was held from May 21 to 24. The team made 46 undercover drug buys throughout the weekend.
"This was a pretty much an atmosphere where everything was available," said State Police Major David Krause. "This was pretty much like an open-air drug supermarket. There was no hiding this or hiding what substances that were available for sale."
Krause said vendors advertised the drug sales.
"There were signs listing what was available for sale," he said. "There were people walking around with substances on trays or in hand. It was offered to the festival-goers."
Several individuals were arrested for selling various illegal substances, including cocaine, MDMA known as "Molly," hallucinogenic mushrooms, hash and prescription medications. Krause said 14 people were arrested inside the venue for sale of illegal substances.
"More arrests are being investigated," he said.
Patrols also made arrests outside the venue. Nine people were arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance, one person was arrested for DWI and 21 people were arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana.
State police said $10,000 to $15,000 worth of hallucinogenic mushrooms were seized and thousands of dollars worth of other drugs, including the highly potent form of marijuana called "marijuana wax."
Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes said the undercover operation was part of a long-term investigation regarding the sale and distribution of illegal drugs at the festival. Oakes said his office heard complaints from neighbors and residents last summer.
"This operation should send a clear message to drug dealers to stay out of Oswego County," Oakes said. "We are vigorously prosecuting drug dealers and seeking state prison."
State police said many of the drug dealers were from out of state, some as far away as California.
