RIP, 2006-2015. :(

Farewell, Presario, long may your legacy of barely running anything made since 2010 live on.
(Hey, it got the job done for the most part.)

So what should I do from here? I'd like a PC that could run Witcher 3, but I don't care about uber settings. If it runs, I'm happy.

Go custom, check stores? I'm open to any and all suggestions. As long as it lasts and isn't junk. I'd like it to be SOMEWHAT future proof, or at least get me through a few years.

I always recommend building yourself except for in rare cases.

Figure out a budget and then come to us in the build thread:

Assuming you don't want to build your own the easiest option is to go on to newegg or amazon and select the options you want for a PC ie how much ram, hard drive size, etc. It's the most straightforward way.

Can you build a LEGO kit?"

If yes, then you can build a computer.

DIY, get more power for less money, and no cheap dodgy components snuck in to the build, either!

Swing by the Computer build thread in Moes with a budget and a list of what you want it to do, and we'll do our best to help you piece together a build parts list! We'll also offer way too much advice and tell you way more than you'll ever need to know to assemble your own rig.

I've read up on custom computer building, but my know-how amounts to opening up a tower and installing a new video card, so I'm a little reluctant. And it seems like it'd be really easy to go over budget, and I didn't want to spend much.

Intel and especially AMD have made great progress in making CPU's that have graphics integrated since you last bought a system. It used to be that systems with integrated graphics was not really for games more advanced than Minesweeper, but not so anymore
Both of them have present new stuff this week and I expect that shortly you can buy something very affordable and rather nice for a limited budget.

PS. If your whole system is from 2010 then you may also wanna try and find money for a new monitor - a good deal has happened in that area with sizes and resolution going up and prices going down.

    Bones heal, glory is forever.

How much are you looking to spend. That'd make it a lot easier.

If you can install a vid card you can build a pc. It is not nearly as daunting as it used to be. And the folks in the build thread can totally help with a parts list that will keep you at budget.

Heh, it's from '06. Software from '10 on started giving me issues. It's mostly my fan translation/emulation workhorse.

Was hoping not to spend more than ~$400.

Oof. $400 is a really tight budget. This meets those specs for a bit more:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883266597

But if you really do want to keep it close to $400 then building is probably the better answer. That or wait for a big sale.

A friend showed me a build from Forbes that looked inspirational. He also said that the best thing about building is that I can get the components gradually, rather than take on a big cost all at once.

Seems like I'm leaning towards it, but I have much to learn. Probably better hit up the techno forum.

PC Part Picker website is very handy if you want to build you own. It has almost everything computer build related sold on the internet listed all together. It also checks component compatibility for you, pretty accurately as far as I can tell, keeps track of how much wattage is used and many other things.

Here is my hubby's computer that he built 6 months ago (some part aren't commonly sold anymore it seems) ---> http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sZBsP6

Over the budget you stated but you can set price ranges for parts, so building a low budget computer should not be a problem.
