Firefox bookmarks icons

Simple question--is it possible to change the little icon that shows up next to each of your bookmarks in Firefox? or is it completely mandated by each site's design?

According to: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.chrome.site_icons , and looking through the related caveats it appears you can disable the icons from showing up, but not actually choose individually which icons themselves go with which website from the options that are already there.

That's more successful googling than I was able to come up with... thanks for trying. Ah well.

The icon is set by a 'favicon.ico' file on the server along with some meta tags that point to the file (tags are optional depending which browser).

Unless there is a plugin to assing your own icon for firefox, then it isn't something that is handled on the client side.

Upon further searching I happened upon this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3176

Tested it and it appears to work exactly as you were needing, simply right click on the bookmark in the tab, go to properties and there should be a new option showing current image and a browse button to change to a new one.

See, I don't know what happened, but one time I was cruising through both a Transformers site and a porn site. I bookmarked both and got the same icon for both (autobot symbol).

That's happened to me several times in firefox, and even once in opera. The World of Warcraft site in my bookmarks menu has White Ninja next to it.

The favicon seems to work about as well as cd autorun on most computers I have owned. One day, for no reason it will stop working, heh.

IE6 refuses to display any icons for me anymore, but Firefox displays them fine except for wikipedia which recently lost it's icon for me and now just shows up as the boring page icon. Annoying too since I cram so many links in the linkbar that for many of them I have no text and exclusively count on that icon. I just know the wombat is PA.

Might download that addon so I can get my wiki favicon back, good stuff to know. It will also let me redo some of the ones I need text for because they have awful favicons. Some people seem to think their logo will scale down to 16x16, they are usually horribly mistaken.

Yeah, for some reason most of mine are little pixies in bondage gear. I have no CLUE how that happened.

it's your computer's way of telling you that you read Bondage Fairies too often.
