What is The Children Of Hurin?

The Children Of Hurin is one of the "unfinished" works left by JRR Tolkien when he died. Much like the Silmarillion (and to a lesser extent, The History Of Middle Earth), the book was for the most part fleshed out, but left in a very unfinished state.
Thankfully Tolkien's son Christopher, long ago took up the mantle of Chief Tolkien Historian and has spent the better part of his life editing these works together.
And now the biggest of these works is finally out.

cover.tolkien.jpg
Compromised party of material previously available in the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle Earth, The Children Of Hurin tells the story of Turin, and of Middle Earth in the years following The War Of Wrath.

Buy this dudes. I'm picking my copy up as soon as I get off work, all preordered at the Barnes And Noble.

Nah, early reviews say that the majority of the book is new, but many of the characters and happenings from Silm show up in it.

If this is about what happened in the silmarillion i don't see it making an especially good movie

unless you only show the best parts

like with the dragons or maybe that one fight

Hollywood studios are eager to buy the film rights of the new book, according to David Brawn, director at Tolkien publisher HarperCollins.

"We all want this first and foremost to enjoy life as a book," said Brawn. "No one's saying never to a film (but) the film rights are reserved by the estate. We want to see what reaction it gets and then let it run its course."

I would love to a visual presentation of the battles at Thangorodrim with Morgoths armies of dragons and Balrogs being smashed by the Valenor and Numenoreans(I probably just botched my history all up)

You really should read The Lord of the Rings, because it's just excellent. I didn't like the Silmarillion as much, it felt as if I were reading a history book rather than a novel.

    Nah.

I'm the same way. I have read about half of each book in the trilogy, and I own a copy of The Silmarillion, but The Hobbit is the only one I've finished.

Probably because my ex and I read it to each other.

I hope his son's position as "chief Tolkien historian" isn't his only job. I mean, it would kind of suck to have your only importance be that you know a lot about your father.

Well, in the case of JRR Tolkien, I would imagine that unraveling his unfinished works and histories--not to mention shepherding his estate--is both a rewarding and remunerative occupation.

You know, it's unlikely that this is going to happen while Christopher Tolkien is alive. He's come out a few times saying that he never would have sold the movie rights, but that happened long before he got control.
Now Royd Tolkien however, would sell tours of his grandfather's gravesite if he thought it would make him rich.

I used to read quite a bit when I was younger. Then I read that and was like, "THIS is supposed to be great literature?" and never read anything again.

Well I have this book on the Canadian Military I've sorta been reading, sorta.

I think that my trouble with Tolkien (outside of the shit-tacular "songs), is that I was introduced to him about two days after I learned the "thumb test" of reading. Namely, that when you're thinking of reading a book, you read one thumb's length...if it doesn't "grab" you in that time, you give up, and find a book that does. In fact, I think that The Fellowship of the Ring was the first book I used it on.

And Fellowship completely failed the fucking thumb test.

In this order, after you finish Neuromancer- Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive (those two will round out the universer that Nueromance takes place in) then you get into Virutal Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow's Parties. Finish off with Pattern Recognition.

It might also have had something to do with the fact that I was nine or ten when I did this.

I should really try to read it now.
