Guys I don't mean to spoil anything
but I am the Arkham Knight
it's me
come and get me, Batman!
also the game is insanely excellent. the scarecrow fear toxin lets them do insanely awesome things as far as transition and narrative so far.
I really wish they had either replaced Robin or Nightwing with one of the many Batgirls, Batwomen or Batlasses this time around. I don't even really care which one. I know they're doing the DLC thing at some point, but...
Just did some testing with texture pop in in the area called Midtown mall (since it was near my spawn point and has a lot of store signs which seem like notable offenders of pop in)
Uncapped FPS (well, 144 since that's my monitor) = pretty much never popped in while I was standing there. Ended test after 30 seconds or so.
Basic forced 30 FPS Ini cap = 4-5 seconds. Still looked kinda bad but at least popped up.
Edited Ini to 60, cap via Rivatuner to 30 = textures not popping for a good 15 seconds at least, some of them popped but not all of them.
So, basically, at least on my end, you can't edit the ini's FPS at all, even if you cap it via other sources, if you want even semi-acceptable pop in.
Really hope they fix this, because even the best option is still pretty shitty at times.
So I pre-ordered at GameStop and got the Harley and Red Hood DLCs
Should I play these BEFORE finishing the main story? After? I didn't realize they're not actually integrated directly into the main game like Catwoman was.
I play on low textures settings because of my 2gb videocard, which mostly looks fine but for some reason the textures on NPC faces and clothes are really bad.
It's extremely noticable, and sorta bumming me out. It seems like a really bad balance with resource usage to have a gazillion lights and sharp object textures in the background, and then have a fireman whose clothes take up half the screen during a cutscene be PS2 quality.
Yeah. He's kinda wasted in the role. You can only tell when gets alll yelly.
I like him as a narrator. He's really good doing the opening. But as Gordon it feels like a mismatch.
Yeah, I've really enjoyed him as the narrator so far. When I met him on the rooftop in the beginning, though, I felt like his voice was too deep for Gordon (probably because I want it to be Gary Oldman).
I only got to play last night for about 30 minutes. So my experience is very limited at this point. However, here are my thoughts, based on the first few tutorial missions, plus the Riddler's first race, plus a bit of free-roam.
1) The Batmobile itself is fine. It has cool guns, the combat mode is a good idea, and from a conceptual level I like it
2) The button mapping is all wrong. After putting countless hours into GTA5, my muscle memory does not agree with their button programming. They need to allow players to be able to remap the Batmobile controls to their liking. OR just give us a preset that approximates the GTA5 controls as closely as they can.
3) The combat mode should not be a button hold (L2). It needs to be a toggle. Put it on the D-Pad. The L2 button is the wrong place for combat mode.
4) After a few runs and a few mistakes through Riddler's first course, I can make an educated prediction that future Riddler races are going to be infuriating. Some of the collision detection is too hard. It's like driving in Borderlands 1, where every little bump, no matter how small, brings your car to a sudden stop. Running over physics objects causes the Batmobile to do all sorts of wonky things that are not possible in real world physics.
5) Enemy tanks feel too tough to be able to match the Batmobile in blow-by-blow combat. The Batmobile was designed by Lucious "Morgan Goddamn Freeman" Fox. The tech is state of the art and second to none. And it is financed by Bruce Wayne, billionaire. How the hell do street thugs and mooks have anything even remotely close to this? And that's just my impression from the tutorial. I can only assume that as the game progresses, the enemy tanks escalate and get even more ridiculous.
I really wonder if Hamill was serious about retiring his Joker role with City, or if that was a smokescreen for Knight. I hate to think he reluctantly got dragged into the role yet again.
Technically not The Joker, but Batman's mental version of the Joker. Meme Joker.
Plus his Trickster on the Flash was basically just the Joker.

Oh, nice. I will make sure I turn this on tonight when I get home from work. Maybe that will be what I need. Does everything else approximately match the controls of GTA5?
I do enjoy that every single vehicle on the road is capable of matching afterburner batmobile in speed and handling. Actually they all appear to handle better.
The 100mph sideswipe vehicle takedowns are probably the most ridiculous example of Batman not killing anyone. Even more so than exploding propane tanks in their faces.
Well, I got it running with no tearing or anything*. But it crashes out with an out of memory error after about 10min, despite only using 5 out of 8 gb.
I'll say this though, even running with everything on low as a precaution, the game looks bloody gorgeous.
*For reference this is with the beta 15.6 driver on a 280x +FX8320
I was having the same crashing error, with a 270x. I fixed it by going into my page file settings. Set your page file size manually. I set mine to min/max of 4gb. It's important that the page file size min/max is the same size, as it will prevent performance hits that occur from the page file being re-sized. This is a general peformance tip I usually do to all my machines, but I forgot when I had to reinstall windows last month. It seems to have fixed my crashing issues, I was able to play for a good 30 minutes during my lunch break.
Oh shit, the good news keeps coming! Greenmangaming have p pledged to offer refunds if the next patch doesn't fix the game. I'm on mobile so can't link it stupidly but it's on gamespot.com. First article. Getting hopeful now!
I will definitely be taking advantage of that if this hypothetical patch doesn't result in major improvements. Good for GMG for doing something about it. That post that the WB guys made over on their forums where they basically said "Yeah, no, you should expect it to run like total dogshit, that's by design" erased all the benefit of the doubt I was giving them. I would definitely have already gone for a refund had I bought through Steam; thought I was gonna be stuck with this thing from GMG, which would have made me have to rethink my business with them in addition to WB.
What a mess of a video game.

So I'm a bit displeased with the way scoring is handled in this game. There's no batswarm replacement, so that throws out the weighing up between number of enemy thugs you have to fight versus needing to up variability or switch to doing ground takedowns (it was a mathematical decision based on current combo score that changed as you whittled down the thugs and was also affected by what type of thug it was, since armored and shielded thugs wouldn't grant points). You just always up variability now. There's no slowdown focus, its a damage upgrade, and it happens as soon as you hit a special takedown. So if you don't use a special takedown you start koing basic thugs with a single strike.
This sucks for points chasers, because no of hits on thugs = points, so the best points chasers wont take this ability. Before I start seriously trying to go for points in challenge rooms I am going to replay this game and not take that ability.
If you take this ability it is impossible to get better points. You have capped yourself because you've reduced the points you can get from enemies. You've also heavily limited the choices you have in combat: if you don't use a takedown of somekind immediately you'll start koing full health thugs, reducing your potential points.
The choice of when to stay in slowdown mode versus using a special takedown was never a trivial one. You always had to choose when you wanted to stay in it for the extra reaction time versus using a takedown to fix a problem, and it meant you would use Batman's alternative ways of dealing with all enemies if you decided to stay in it. All that split second decision making is out.
Ultra stun can't be followed up with ground takedown immediately or it fails. Previously Batman would just connect mid air.
The new batarang has a longer animation and recovery, so it can't be used as a fast reliable clutch replacement for normal punches to build combo.
The new stuff he has is very cool for flashy, spectacular, and fun combat. But they forgot about dudes like me who want meaningful second by second choices and multiple paths to scoring well. Now its only variability and also don't take certain abilities.
So I'm pretty bummed about that.
Oh and the whole waves thing is out in combat rooms. The first room was just an endless fight until you lose your combo. The second is two waves that spawn mid fight. What I think of enemies magically appearing right next to you halfway through a fight is unprintable.
There was nothing wrong with the four round system they used before.

Popping in to say that I really enjoy this game, but are there stalk/combat challenges akin to the ones found in previous games? I can't seem to find them.
I avoided taking the damage upgrade for exactly the reason that points are gained per hit and keeping enemies alive as long as possible is important for getting the most out of them.
Of course there's no combat challenge rooms so who cares. The AR missions suck.

I regret taking it now.
The challenge rooms are, basically, akin to Assassin Creed Brotherhoods challenges. They feel roughly the same. Endless waves, enemies spawn continuously on the edges of the field, and some of them have conditions like "never lose your combo".
The predator ones are standard predator ones, but you've also lost some basic abilities. You've got some replacement abilities, but they're heavily dependent on environmental objects. Losing default double takedown hurts since fear takedown can't be used twice in quick succession. There were some really clever tricks you could do with the old 2 for 1 noisy takedowns. Not anymore.
I also can't seem to ledge pull. He just gets up and tries to silent takedown them. I liked pulling dudes off ledges. You could even do it with multiple dudes in the way watching the guys you pulled down, you just had to drop down afterwards. It was a great way to build fear too. Now its suicide since he jumps up.
It seems like they didn't design fear takedown to be this extra addition. They sort of designed it to be the main way you take out the majority of the thugs. So some of your old noisy takedowns have been turned into silent ones, and some previous animations have been removed and replaced with bats jumping down behind the enemy and doing a standard silent takedown.
Which is, you know, good for getting another fear takedown up but really sucky for getting some variability in your predator sequences. At least let me press a different button to do the old noisy grate takedown or something. I miss that.
You also can't get into wall vent covers quickly anymore, since slide has been removed.
It's both good and bad. There's lots of new abilities, but I don't like how many old animations have been removed and replaced with standard silent takedowns. Makes it a bit samey.

Screenshots from a bit after Ace Chemical, there's a spoiler in them about who he meets in the last room there!, but show why I'm a bit annoyed with the graphics:
Gordons face isn't the worst of the lot, but his supposed moustache is a total blur. His clothes actually look really sharp and defined in contrast.
This is really lazy.... unable to read what they wrote because of the graphics settings?
For reference, I'm playing it on an 3.4ghz i5 (4th Gen), 760 (2gb), 8gb ram, installed on an SSD. Pretty much on the settings nvidia recommends, except with AA on.
I also notice some loading crap when racing the car, especially turning corners with debree flying around.

The ini has anisotropic filtering x4 by default. Go into the ini and set it to x16. Everything is much, much clearer for me now. Great fine detail everywhere.
Also the detail graphics option on low dramatically muddies nearby textures. I have shadows on low and textures and detail on normal. I have roughly the same system as you Sander and I'm running smooth 30fps now, although I also tweaked a few other things.

WTF kind of head-up-the-assery is this? Simple quality-of-life control options have to be unlocked? Suffer through a sufficient amount of misery to "earn" the right to make the game less frustrating? What's next, earn 10 achievements to be able to adjust mouse sensitivity? Finish level 5 to make intro videos skippable? I have literally never heard of anything so ridiculous. Rocksteady/Iron Galaxy: Get fucked.
Oh and it's been said before, but for the people that miss it, adding
-nologo to the game launch options is godsend. (Library/game/right click/properties/launch options)
As the person who usually has the "I've never heard of that, must be you" issues, it's kindof amusing this go around where I'm having zero issues, haven't seen a single bug, graphics are gorgeous and framerate is smooth.
Now it's everyone else's turn to lose their shit! *maniacal laughter*
My textures, on average, look good but sometimes they don't load all the way or something. Running on normal, and you get these occasions where it looks like Batman dumped mud all over the dash of the batmobile.
Also I am really not liking this story. This is after the blimp thingy.
Let's take the only female protagonist, kidnap her like an hour into the story, and then kill her! Granted, Batman is hopped up on Scarecrow's Fun Gas and he was the only person to witness it so they could do takebacks later, but the damage is done. I feel like Oracle is just here to be a perpetual victim since they REALLY enjoy bringing up her spinal injury over and over. It's just a big ol' game of "Let's show Barbara in traumatic situations!" and that feels real crap when you got two Robins and Alfred that could also be messed with.
Also Jokeritis remains Silver Age levels of stupid. The plot is more focused this time, but good lord it's not good besides Brain Joker.

Having to play a bit to unlock alt-controls for the Batmobile is unquestionably dumb, especially when the game makes no mention that you can totally do it, but let's not get it twisted: it's very, very early on, after the game finishes tutorializing the basic car controls, and if you're rushing you'll get to that point in maybe 10 minutes.
Of all the things to be outraged over in this game, that shit is super-whoop-de-doo minor.

All the other things can be attributed to laziness/incompetence, though. This is something they deliberately chose to do and it is absolutely idiotic. It's the principle/precedent of the thing.

This has to be the most catastrophic PC launch of a AAA game ever. Makes Unity look small time by comparison.
Of course there's no combat challenge rooms so who cares. The AR missions suck.
All of that is crisp as hell on a Xbox One. That is not at all the way the game looks on the consoles.
-nologo to the game launch options is godsend. (Library/game/right click/properties/launch options)
Now it's everyone else's turn to lose their shit! *maniacal laughter*
Also I am really not liking this story. This is after the blimp thingy.
Also Jokeritis remains Silver Age levels of stupid. The plot is more focused this time, but good lord it's not good besides Brain Joker.
Of all the things to be outraged over in this game, that shit is super-whoop-de-doo minor.
All the other things can be attributed to laziness/incompetence, though. This is something they deliberately chose to do and it is absolutely idiotic. It's the principle/precedent of the thing.
This totally worked out! @Sydrian thanks! Ran for 45min to an hour with no problems at all. Next on the list is seeing how badly improved character models affect performance.
