"It's Dark Souls 3" is honestly all I need, I can't get enough of that exploration and combat. It's a bummer that so many people seem to be getting Souls fatigue, because a huge part of those games for me is talking about it here.

I hope they go back to the game world existing in not-impossible space like Dark Souls and Bloodborne and not like Dark Souls 2, they should have realized from feedback that that was something people didn't like in DS2.

I always took the weird space in Dark Souls 2 to mean that space is breaking down as well as time.

they've openly admitted that it was a result of late changes to the game requiring some areas to be moved around or cut, but it does fit within certain interpretations of the lore and story

Like, you step into a whirlpool maelstrom thing in the opening cutscene. Things are Betwixt as hell.

You can interpret it that way if you like, but I think that's still way less cool than the world they designed in DS1 that physically fits together.

Portal 1 never reached gratification, and Portal 2's writing never once stopped being grating

i think it's less important that it make physical sense and more important that it feel connected

one thing that dark souls 2 can genuinely be faulted on is that there's very few circumstances in which you have an experience like coming out of the blighttown swamp and finding the backdoor and realizing that's all connected

though dark souls 2 has shortcuts on the small scale within levels, you're not finding paths to places you've been before and going "oh shit this was right here"

It's a feat of design that it feels like a place that actually works. That could exist beyond being levels in a game.

I never minded things like the transition between Earthen Peak and Iron Keep while I was playing. I don't think about things like that while in the moment so I didn't even realize it was weird until people brought it up. What I did miss in DS2 were the moments i'd get in DS1 where i'd been traveling for what felt like ages and i'm taking an elevator and I step out and... holy shit am I back at Firelink? What the fuuuuuuck?

Blew my goddamn mind when that happened, and they did it over and over again in different locations. The limited fast travel probably helped, and that game is the one instance where i'll ever defend a decision to limit fast travel.
