Also I'll keep it in mind about the ssd vs hybrid HD. I'll do some more research

"Hybrid" HDDs are just regular platter HDDs with an extra cache built in, usually not very large. They work okay if the software you are using is constantly loading things into and out of RAM, but the data in the solid state part of the drive still has to get loaded in there off the platter part of the drive.

Samsung SSDs are pretty much the best, but there are plenty of other companies making good fast reliable SSDs if you can't afford to spend big dollars. This would make a fantastic primary drive for all your programs and a bunch of games, and you just keep media and other cruft on a nice cheap platter drive. This is a cheaper option that is still a great drive for less than the Sammy.

So would it make sense to have 2 hard drives

    1x 500GB SSD
    1x 500GB normal hard drive?

And I split my data between the two?

What's better to install on a SSD and what's better on a normal HDD?

Your OS on the SSD, as well as games and applications if you have space.

Media files on the HDD, movies, photos, etc. You can get a much larger HDD, 2-3TB is probably the sweetspot on megabytes per dollar.

SSD is great for the OS and programs you use more often.

platter drives is for stuff that doesn't change or you don't use frequently, like movies, or general documents (word, excel, photos)

most games will benefit from SSD, with 500gigs you should be able to fit a dozen games or so

    Ladies.
  • chrishallett83chrishallett83 Hi! Registered User regular
Windows and your other programs (Office, Photoshop, that kind of thing) go on the SSD, personal documents, artwork, movies, music etc. goes on the platter drive.

Would it be worth just getting a 1TB SSD instead of two separate drives?

And how bad will my quality of life be if I get a normal HDD or a Hybrid?

Hybrid is not worth the hassle, SSD is probably the single biggest QoL upgrade you can do to a modern PC.

If you can float the cost of a 1TB SSD, go ahead.

It's worth waiting a few weeks to shop for components if you can manage it, though. Hardware tends to get pretty cheap for black friday deals and the like. Last year SSD prices got down to nearly 25 cents per gig.

  • KarlKarl Registered User regular
looking into it a 1TB SSD puts me over budget.

However a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HD fits nicely with my current budget

    So I have two choices

    All in one 32" with
    I5 6600K
    32GB ram
    GTX 1060 6GB
    500GB SSD
    1TB HDD

    or

    Monitor 22" monitor

    Tower
    I5 6600K
    32GB ram
    GTX 1060 6GB
    500GB SSD
    1TB HDD

Honestly the price different between the two is like a fiver (the all in one is cheaper) and with my frequency of moving it does seem like the better option.

Comparing like for like as you posted it does seem like a no brainer, the 32" vs 22" monitor being the only discernible difference.

I would however like to know a bit more about the rest of the internals used. I see that you're getting a company to put it together for you and sometimes those sorts of places use... subpar parts for the bits they don't shout at you about. Do you have the specs on the RAM, motherboard and screen for both builds?

Yeah that's the only thing I noticed, I think you'd definitely want some kind of "silent" cooler in the All In One, otherwise if you really don't have plans of fiddling around inside of it the AIO is clearly the better buy.

edit: and unless you're doing photo/video editing your can probably get away with either 8-16 gigs of RAM. Depending on whether or not you still want overkill.

The only option for cooling is processor cooling?
For £19 extra I can add PCS frostflow 40 series high performance CPU cooler.

So £1652 for the all in one

The tower and monitor combo comes in at £1649 but for the sake of 3 quid I get a monitor 10" bigger if I go all in one.

I was thinking 32gb of ram for future proofing

I don't plan on buying a PC for a long time

I'm now officially sick of google chrome.

I'd first try disabling extensions until you figure out which one is causing the issues. You can also check to see if all of the extensions are up to date. If none of that works, uninstall Chrome, reinstall, log into your Google account, and see if that works.

There's always Firefox and Edge now supports some addons/extensions.

still missing some basic stuff that makes developing for it a pain

It seems like Chrome is setup up so that in the same way as it runs a new process for each tab so that if one goes down they don't all go down, it also runs an individual process for each extension and then applies that extension across all tabs simultaneously to ensure the extensions are also crash proof, which is why you can have only one tab open but still have like 6 different Chrome processes running in Task Manager.

Opera has mobile ad blocking built in which is an absolute game changer with regards to mobile browsing. It does a shit job with some video sites but otherwise it's pretty great.

I've switched the whole way over to Opera and I'm really happy with it, runs better than Chrome and it's got native ad blocking with no extensions or bullshit. It'll find a way to suck at some point because they all do but right now I'm happy.
