It's a bit if a conundrum. The obvious wisdom is to never buy a console at launch. Wait a year for the games to come out.
But if everyone followed that advice, no games would ever come out because the console wouldn't sell at all for that first year.

Unfortunately it'll always be a problem. They'll never get the 3rd party support the others get. They'll get some half-hearted year old ports to start and then it'll dry up. Nintendo is doomed to support their own hardware almost single handedly. Every once and a while they'll get a really good 3rd party game like Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate and Bayo 2 due to deals they strike, but that'll be it.
On top of that HD game development is so expensive that they won't even get the second and third tier experimental games that they did during the Wii period such as Boy and his Blob, Deadly Creatures, Mushroom Men, and De Blob. Their hope for those type of games rests in their continuing their support of indie developers like they have been for the Wii U.
This will be Nintendo's fate as long as they are in the console biz.
I mean, heck, they couldn't even get 3rd parties to support the Wii U with all of the cross gen titles that have come and gone over the last two years.

I waited till the Zelda version of the Wii U to come out (which now sadly won't read discs). (damned if I'll get it fixed for over $100 if Zelda isn't coming out)
The Wii I bought day one (woooo standing in line!) on Zelda alone. I picked up two more games that day, but damned if I remember what they were!

I still remember when I picked up the Wii. It was the system that finally brought me back to Nintendo since I skipped the N64 and Gamecube in favor of the PS1 and PS2.
I picked up Trauma Center (Still one of the best Wii games) and Super Monkey Ball (Hated it). See what I mean, I didn't actually get and play through Twilight Princess until probably three years into the Wii life cycle. :P

This is what eShop indie titles are for. Which Wii U has a pretty great library of.

I know, I said that already. :P
Seriously, the e-shop has some absolutely amazing games to play.
It's funny that Omega Force originally started designing a traditional Zelda game but Nintendo requested a regular Musuo game. I do wonder what they would have brought to the table.
Off-topic a bit but I've played both Darksiders and Okami across multiple platforms and they've both bored me. Zelda just has something special that's hard to replicate.

Aw man. I love Okami, though.
I will never stop wanting a Wii U port of the HD version.

Yeah, I wonder what that would've looked like.
Traditional Zelda dungeons where you have to beat 100 enemies to advance to the next floor?

I'm just sitting here with my launch day Wii U feeling like I just bought the damn thing yesterday, and everyone is ready to move on to NX already. Has this console cycle been super short? Am I losing my marbles?

Yeah, I liked reading about that.
And they kept being like, "are you sure? We can really do this with your characters? You don't mind? We were going to portray them kind of traditionally and not introduce too much crazy stuff..." And Nintendo was like "yeah, sure, go nuts! Make the game any way you want! Put a personal spin on it, go crazy, give the characters wild attacks, throw in some new characters, we don't care. We want different."

Same here. I hate that the Wii U cycle might be cut short due to sales and the next big thing, but man have I played a ton of it and am really sad that it has failed so badly for Nintendo. You can tell a lot of love and time went into the system, and Miiverse was such a neat idea that goes underused by most. The amazing art that some have put on Miiverse has been phenomenal though. Plus it's been a gold mine for hilarious stuff.

I hear you. I got one this Feb. so if they replace it next year or something I'm going to be rather annoyed. I guess that's what I get for jumping in so late, but it just didn't have enough titles I cared about until recently.

Might just be the phenomenon of time passing faster the older you get.
When we were kids it felt like we had the NES and SNES for decades. Now I remember last year thinking "wow, it's already been 2 years for Wii U, and 3 years for 3DS?!"
You know, that is species-ist against dog people, though. Peach and Rosalina change their clothes between vehicle types. Isabelle shouldn't feel any pressure against doing the same.
We understand that consumers who buy many download versions may not be fully convinced if all of these products cost more than the packaged versions. In the new membership service that we are now developing to replace “Club Nintendo,” we are thinking about providing a system where Nintendo can give (individual) offers to each consumer. I would like to explain the details when we have everything in place for the new membership service, which is targeted to launch this autumn
Hmm. I wonder if they'll make DDP permanent or it's based on your purchases.

It is a real shame about the WiiU. I've never been overall more happy with a console. I might still own less games for it than I do my 360, but I love nearly every damn game I have for it.
"Nintendo in March announced its plan of releasing Nintendo NX in 2016"
This never happened.
"Nintendo reportedly is looking to ship 20 million Nintendo NX in the first year."

Eh, if it's both console and handheld, they could pull that number off. If it's just one device, yeah, Nintendo learned their lesson about over-ambitious sales targets this gen (which is why some Amiibo are mythical).

I'd say a combination of dungeons, overworld, and the use of new items to carry you through it?
I'm not sure what best describes a traditional zelda game
but I'm confident saying that Hyrule warriors is (like Link's crossbow training) a 'Zelda game' as much as Super Smash Brothers is

Even if you're not a Nintendo fan, it's impossible to deny -- pretty much no one makes games like they do. Especially nowadays.

I'm going to hell for laughing at that last one.
