unfortunately, to do that, I'd have to fix it for $100
Which is probably around what I'd get for it. Basically, at this point, I have a really expensive paper weight that I'd have to spend $100 to fix if I wanted to play the non existant games.
(I am aware that the Wii U has many nice games, but I bought it because I wanted to play a new Zelda on a Zelda console)
I feel pretty let down that they couldn't manage a single Zelda title for the Wii U that wasn't just an HD port or a Dynasty Warriors reskin.
Every other console has had at least one Zelda by now and ALL their consoles have had at least one Zelda to themselves to justify (in my mind at least) purchase.
Uh..first of all, the Wii U is getting a Zelda game, very likely next year.
Also, why did you buy a console when apparently the single game that you want to play on it wasn't out yet?
Two reasons
1: there has always been at least 1 Zelda available on each console that wasn't available on another (until now I'll imagine)
2: Nintendo limited editions are usually really REALLY limited
Until Nintendo says otherwise, The Legend of Zelda title announced for release on Wii U is releasing on the Wii U.
Would you say otherwise if you were Nintendo?
Edit: also, if it does come out at the same time for the NX, then what was the point (for me) of even owning a Wii U?!
No, I wouldn't say otherwise if I was Nintendo. For the exact reason you just provided. If the Wii U died without ever getting an exclusive Zelda game, people would be out for blood and it would cost the company a ton of consumer confidence in their next system. Nintendo can afford to have one fewer NX launch title more easily than they can afford to burn bridges like that.
I guess
I'm sure it's coming out for both systems (probably at the same time like Twilight Princess)
I just wish I wasn't stuck with a $350 paperweight for showing confidence in Nintendo's Zelda track record.
If you don't like any of the games Nintendo has released on the Wii U then you probably won't like Zelda either because you apparently have some fundamental issues with the way they design games.
unfortunately, to do that, I'd have to fix it for $100

If people fly into a rage because one game is also on your console's successor...
...I don't even know, man. That happens so often I have no idea why this would even be a thing. These people who are hypothetically out for blood should be glad they didn't buy a PS3 for The Last Guardian.
oh I'm not flying into a rage
but for me, $350 plus games isn't a little bit of money. It was a pretty big purchase and it was made based off of 25 years worth of previous company track record.
I suppose I could be wrong, and it could come out as a Wii U exclusive (but I don't think I'll be wrong), or it could come out and be the exact same as the NX version (but then what would be the NX incentive?).
I won't buy another Nintendo console until the game I want has been shipped. Win some, lose some!
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were hulking out in this thread or anything; my post was in response to the idea that people would be "out for blood" if the new Zelda weren't exclusive.

Fair enough, obviously everyone has franchises / games they don't care about. I just think it's unfair to dismiss the Wii U's entire library just because there isn't a "proper" new Zelda game for it yet.
Well, I mean, spending that kind of money because of a game that may or may not come out is pretty silly, in my opinion. Unless the game is on a physical or virtual shelf for you to buy, don't assume it'll come. You should be buying something on the strength of what you can get at that moment, not what might be coming in the future.
It would have been like me buying A Wii in 2006 only to play a F-Zero or Star Fox game, since you know there had been several of them in the past, including one of each on the previous generation console so clearly there had to have been those games coming for the Wii!
(and yes, I know Zelda is a bit different, but the point stands)
Zelda is coming out for the Wii U. There may be a non-zero chance that it won't, but that's so infinitesimally small as to be pointless.
This is not what's being debated here
Just the very likely scenario that it will also be on NX, and likely an improved version, even if artificially
Like how Nintendo was really shitty about only putting widescreen on the Wii version of TP
Did GC ever support 16:9?
The first couple hardware revisions of the gamecube supported 480p widescreen through component cables you had to buy separately and were damned near impossible to find. Not a ton of games supported 480p so future hardware revisions of the console didn't support component/480p at all, 480i only. They literally removed the port that allowed you to connect the component cables.
Hilariously the Wii brought back the same port and cables for it's 480p widescreen support.

I have GameCube component cables; they're completely different from the Wii cables.
Widescreen doesn't need component cables to work, either. Heck, there were Sega Saturn games with widescreen support. It was only the progressive scan option that required the component cables.
Widescreen support back in the day was "Turn on the tv setting that stretched the image all funny, then turn on the game option that squished the image back to normal".
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."

The Gamecube, N64, and SNES share the same A/V connection, but the Gamecube had an additional "Digital" Component out that utilized a special cable and put out a higher quality picture than even the Wii could.

Nope, they're not the same.
From the Gamecube going back to pretty much the SNES, they've used the same AV composite cables (the yellow/red/white ones). Gamecube then had the component cables, but you still needed the composite ones just for audio.
Then Wii came and started completely from scratch again. Nothing was compatible. I remember very early on having to order the component cables direct from Nintendo.
The Wii U however is still using the same video port as the Wii. In fact you can use your Wii component cables and get full 1080p if you want. HDMI is just a ton more universal and easier to use.

So now you're just telling someone else what their opinion should be? You're being a real goose.
I just find it hard to believe that someone likes Zelda, yet isn't interested in anything else on the system.
He's free to have that opinion, I just think it's a bit weird.
It's just I've played Mario so many times! (arguably, I've played Zelda almost as much, but Mario feels staler for some reason). I have no interest in Donkey Kong, Smash Bros. (I already have 64, Melee, and Brawl), or Metroid.
I almost got Capt. Toad though.
I love nintendo and I think they make fantastic games. It's just the only ones that still seem new and entertaining to me are the Zelda ones.
It was (sort of?) a gamble I guess. I already presented my argument but I'll do it again for posterity.
Fact: Every Nintendo System has had at least one (often times two) original Zelda titles released for it.
Fact: Nintendo's limited editions are often extremely limited!
I don't think anyone would say I was making a reckless decision in purchasing the zelda edition Wii U in anticipation for an original Zelda title.

And it looks like the Wii will have an original Zelda, a spin-off, and a remaster by the end of its lifespan. That's not too bad all things considered.
Even the 3DS, for being more successful than the Wii U has only gotten one "original" Zelda title in the form of Triforce Heroes. Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D are both remasters with A Link Between Worlds being arguably a remake since it pulls so many elements straight out of A Link to the Past.

The thing is that I already own Wind Waker and while the remaster is nice, it's not $350 nice. I don't count Hyrule Warriors any more than I count Link's Crossbow Training. It's just the Zelda brand slapped onto another game.
What was the point of buying a Wii U for a new Zelda when that new Zelda will probably be scaled up on a new system?
Then it will not have had an original Zelda title, it will have had a remake and an inferior edition.
Also, I don't think you could call Link Between Worlds a remake.
edit: and I know I'm sounding like a curmudgeon. I am 100% glad that people have got the Wii U and are enjoying it. I just wish I hadn't purchased one. Nintendo is one of a very small handful of companies I will always support, but now I won't support them from the get-go as I would have (and did) in the past.
The Wii did, and the Wii played GC games. Also component cables for it are incredibly easy to find
Ideally I would have been playing GameCube Twilight Princess on a Wii that had widescreen support instead of being forced to choose between waggle/widescreen or controller/fullscreen
The controller/standard wins out at the end of the day, but it's a bummer to play that game in fullscreen knowing that it's not as good as it could have been for artificial reasons
I don't know how much of an improvement an NX Zelda would be to its Wii U counterpart. You'd have to assume that it's already being designed with extensive gamepad use already, so even assuming the NX has gamepad support the controls will be the same. No "Twilight Princess waggle" here. The graphics are already 1080p. And Nintendo has always put simplistic style over raw horsepower graphics every time. So I doubt very much there's going to be a massive graphical leap between the two, if there even is one to begin with. I don't even remember, were the graphics between GC and Wii Twilight significant?
I mean we'll not know one way or another until we get there. But my gut feeling is that if there is a redux of TP's situation and the next Zelda is on both consoles, I don't see the NX version having any significant advantage over the Wii U version.

For Zelda purposes, you could be right (and for purely selfish reasons, I kind of hope you are!). But the addition of power (which I certainly hope the NX has), means hopefully attracting third party games to Nintendo (who I hope by now realize they can't go it alone anymore).
Hell I kinda just want Reggie to actually appear at E3 next year standing beside a graphic that has EA, Activision, Ubisoft and Bethesda and for him to just yell "FUCK 'EM!"
Because they'll get the same kind of third party support either way, so why not get a word in
I've been playing Captain Toad. I didn't play it nearly enough when I got it. I'm glad I decided to pick it up again because it makes me happy. Not with the Wii U, that's still a miserable failure, but that game is such joy while it lasts.

Then they better figure out a way to do better on their own. I mean I know Nintendo can remain in the black for like 10 years or whatever without selling a single system, but you can only piss away so much money without having a damn good reason. I'm also pretty sure Nintendo knows the Wii U is a pretty big flop when compared to every other system (ok, except the Virtual Boy) they've put out.

I think that's why the idea of a hybrid or a system that supports cross functional games between console and portable makes sense. Right now they have to split their resources between 3DS and WiiU.

They're not coming back. Give up that pipe dream.
I don't understand -why- they would be gone. All it would take is for Nintendo to use dev packages roughly equal to the competition right?
If they won't go that far, why should third parties go to nintendo?
If I was EA or whoever and saw a potential third of my market going to waste, I'd jump all over it.

EA is the company that calls this "Gen 4", otherwise known as "The first generation started with the Playstation."

They don't care about Nintendo.
that was just a random example. I generally meant any software company not currently producing much for Nintendo.
but in reality, if the NX (or whatever) was easier to develop for and roughly on par with the PSwhatever and XBox-2, why wouldn't EA make madden 53 for it?

It's a user base that pays money to play games.
If Madden sold in any significant numbers on Nintendo platforms, EA would still be publishing it on both the Wii U and 3DS.
EA could probably quite easily port over the Xbox 360/PS3 build of Madden to the Wii U with little problem and little cost, but they refuse to do so.
Everything is about sales. Even if the NX uses very similar development tools to the Xbox One and PS4 (and the chances of that are...small), it still costs time and money to port games over to the console. And Nintendo consoles don't get sales on AAA 3rd party games.
This is a direct quote from Ubisoft regarding AC:IV sales on Wii U
“It’s very simple. What we see is that Nintendo customers don’t buy Assassin’s Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers.”
Based on some googling AC:IV sold 11 million units total, and only 300,000 were on Wii U.
Ubisoft was a big parter for nintendo Wii U. But AC IV didn't sell on it, ZombiiU lost money, codblops2 was sold on Wii U and again some quick googling estimates sales in the 265k range for it on that platform.
So yea, 3rd party AAA games don't come to nintendo platforms because they don't sell on nintendo platforms.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were hulking out in this thread or anything; my post was in response to the idea that people would be "out for blood" if the new Zelda weren't exclusive.
I just find it hard to believe that someone likes Zelda, yet isn't interested in anything else on the system.

It's not that weird. I love Nintendo games, but the list of their franchises I don't care about is just as long, if not longer, than the list of the ones I love.
Fair enough, obviously everyone has franchises / games they don't care about. I just think it's unfair to dismiss the Wii U's entire library just because there isn't a "proper" new Zelda game for it yet.

It's obvious some people take this stuff personally when it's simply someones opinion.
This thread has some defenders who jump at anyone who expresses disappointment and it's really silly
I have GameCube component cables; they're completely different from the Wii cables.
Widescreen doesn't need component cables to work, either. Heck, there were Sega Saturn games with widescreen support. It was only the progressive scan option that required the component cables.
I know, I know, being pedantic here.
Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I distinctly remember unplugging my GC component cable and plugging it into the Wii. I might have to dig it out of the box tonight and double check.
"If you don't like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, or The Little Mermaid, how could you possibly like Frozen? You must have some fundamental issues with the way Disney makes movies."
The Gamecube, N64, and SNES share the same A/V connection, but the Gamecube had an additional "Digital" Component out that utilized a special cable and put out a higher quality picture than even the Wii could.
So you probably had a Component cable for your Gamecube that connected via the A/V port but it didn't output 480p.

This thread also has a few who go out of their way to provoke these responses. Nintnedo discussions everywhere are full of both.
