Verizon FiOS & Fiberoptic Internet?

JMAN871JMAN871 Registered User regular
edited April 2007 in Games and Technology
My family right now has Comcast cable internet and TV. It works alright - the customer service is awful, reliability can occasionally be an issue, but otherwise it seems to get the job done. My dad, though, just discovered a service offered by Verizon called FiOS - Fiber-Optic Somethingorother - which claims to offer both TV support that rivals that of Comcast and other cable providers, and an internet connection that it claims is much faster than cable.

Have you guys heard anything about fiber-optic services (Verizon's or those of other companies)? Do any of you actually have it? Certainly, Verizon is exaggerating the differences in order to make sales, but is there a noticeable difference in speed/reliability/etc. I don't think there's much of a difference in price between cable and FiOS, but in short, is it worth going through the major hassle of dumping Comcast, installing FiOS, etc?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Yeah if you can get and you download a lot or do lots of heavy surfing then go for it. Verizon's customer service sucks just as much as Comcast. I work for a separate competitor, so I might be biased. There's an actual Fiber optic line to your house, but new services=unforseen consequences.

No, my friend, they are not exaggerating. FiOS is fiber to your home versus copper. It kicks cables ass all over the playground. Get it and be glad that you are in a FTTP area and not in a FTTN knock off area that the "new" AT&T services. Uverse is like FiOS' bitch.

I wish you did too. I am moving there for college in august and it is going to be hard as hell to part with my FiOS connection.

I wont be able to get downspeeds of 800kb/s in bittorrent anymore =(

Austin is a rad town. Be sure you get Time Warner Cable internet and not Yahoo's offering. Even TWLite is faster than Yahoo's DSL.

    That depends...

    http://www22.verizon.com/content/consumerfios/packages+and+prices/packages+and+prices.htm

    5MB/2MB is $39.99
    15MB/2MB is $49.99
    30MB/5MB is $179.99

Obviously the sweet spot is 15/2, but the 5/2 plan will provide enough downstream to suck things down at full speed and have the bottleneck be the remote server.

The line is to your house. They might throttle it down once it gets to your modem because of pricing plans.

Unfortunately not, but the internet speeds don't impress me much. I'd be interested in their HD channel offerings, though. My bill from TWC for digital cable, an HD DVR, and their 5mbps down internet is $120 each month (renting the cable modem). That was after an introductory 6 months at $80/month.

I work from home so I'm itching for some faster upload speeds. 1mbps from AT&T would be nice.

edit: oh God, Uverse has Fox sports SW in HD. TWC is "supposed to", but the channel always says "off-air". I would LOVE to see my Astros in HD.

If your area provides it, Verizon FIOS is leagues better. Leagues. For me it was like going from 56k to cable.

We are still a little while out from getting access to it, but I am on a special promo with TWC, $108 for Digital Cable + HD-DVR, RR, and Digital Phone. I called them right before the special expired and dropped the "AT&T is offering me Uverse, can you extend my promo" and it took all ove 5 minutes for them to extend it another year to keep me as a customer.

I have no problem with TWC, but I'd like a little competition in the market.

The investment on the part of the telco to run FTTP is very high so in most areas you will find only one carrier doing it.

FIOS Internet and FIOS TV are slowly making their way around Long Island... my uncle has it in Oyster Bay and a friend of mine has it in Valley Stream. I've been very impressed with the TV service alone. I'm hoping and praying that they bring it to the town I'm moving to, as I'd leave Cablevision in half a second if I could.

It annoys me even more seeing as my new building is less than 1 mile from a Verizon building.

And you could get 15/2 for the same price with FIOS according to the listed numbers.

Yeah DC++ hubs are local so they're going to be super fast. A&M had a thriving DC++ community as well as a built in network file search tool until the RIAA intervened.

I can't imagine the usenet speeds a FiOS connection would warrant. My brain asplode.

Sweet, Jester is my second choice right now behind San Jacinto. SanJac is hard to get into though so Jester is a lot more likely. I figured there would be a DC++ hub which is good for downloading stuff, but I still want a good connection for games and stuff.

you aren't allowed to play games at Jester. You have a download limit outside of the HUB, and violating it gets your room knocked down to 56k speed for a month.

Besides, jester sucks anyways. Hopefully you get into san jac.

Jester sucks balls…though I've never personally been in one of the rooms.

How much use would someone get out of Fios, if you're not a big downloader? Other than WoW, I'd say the heaviest use I get is the occasional streaming video, but I don't use bittorrent anymore, and I buy a game off steam maybe once every 6 months.

Holy crap, I pay close to $50 for 3m/512 through Charter. I don't think FiOS would becoming to Reno anytime soon, and Verizon's website isn't being helpful.

Drat, enjoy it those who have it.
