Water collectors on the side of a mountain- what for?

So my father found a couple of big water collection tanks up in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. Here's 1 (and a lovely partial shot of his finger):

Anyone know what the heck they're for? They don't seem to be that old, as the construction seems to be in good repair still etc. But they're located 50+ miles from anything. But someone put in a lot of effort to build them. Why? Google is failing me here, so it's up to YOU!

Assuming this was private land, they're rain catchers and are most likely for the use of whoever owns the land. Perhaps someone was planning on building a house, but something stopped those plans.

If you find something 50+ miles from anything it probably has something to do with drugs.

    This sounds really sinister.

Probably either moonshiners or drug growers.

Best advice? Don't go taking pictures of strange structures in the middle of no where unless you want a Colombian Necktie.

The water is used to make moonshine, which is poured over another plot of land to grow an especially potent strain of weed, which then gets ground up as an ingredient for the best meth you've ever had.

Maybe the water is collected for some mystical purpose

You should try some, maybe you'll gain the gift of prophecy

Nah, you only get that if you drink the water that comes from Labrador sized worms.

Of note, in some counties water is "claimed" in all of its forms. Whether it's from the ground, canal, or sky someone owns the rights to it. Meaning that collecting said water is against the law. Normally this law is oft-overlooked for rain catchers because really who's going to bother prosecuting that? But several years into the worst drought this state's seen in a long time, when water rights are a huge hot button issue? That changes things a bit.

Guess that's where all the water in California went- 2 car-sized tanks in the mountains. They're both full.

Can't call the authorities- they could be in on the water smuggling ring and then whoopsie!

  • KadithKadith Registered User regular
If they're full then somebody will probably be coming to collect them soon.

You should set up a stake out.

The roll had to be good. We've established it was bad.
