Good god this game looks bad. I generally have a low tolerance for many of the things that make a JRPG what it is (i.e. unsubtle, angsty writing, grindy gameplay) but this is something else entirely. And the voices don't help.
I really enjoy a well-made JRPG, but the bad ones are baaaaad. There are also a lot of JRPGs that have really interesting systems, but the characters and VO are so painfully awful that you have to try your best to ignore them.
But then you have the games like this one, where every shot of the female character is an upskirt or a downshirt; where the all-female cast speaks in some kind of shrill, hyperactive, bubbly squeal that no human ears should be subjected to; where every line of dialogue is about how cute/adorable the female characters are. Basically otaku fap material pasted to a JRPG engine. The result is just... creepy and/or awkward.
lulz at Jerry/Mike's different reactions to "the verse maidens" and Jerry's "I don't hate it." This is why I love PA. It's character-driven humor, only the characters are actual people. Jerry's ability to be self-aware and even a little ashamed of his fetishes while also completely and unapologetically nourishing himself on them at the same time is one of my favorite things. Jerry/Mike are such great foils for each other in so many god damn ways. They are both fun by themselves, but little moments like that where they foil off each other is where the PA magic happens.
This has been a big back-and-forth for us. Some users want the boring bits cut out, some do not. So, we ended up with both! If you subscribe to our Youtube channel (or check out our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/pennyarcadeTV/videos) you'll see the extended cuts of First 15 videos. They're also linked at the end of the edited First 15 videos.
I was thinking "okay, it's not really my thing but maybe it'll be some kind of innovative music-based combat, like picking an appropriate song that you do 'battle' with, like set the tempo or whatever for the fight, then your attacks are like improvisations or whatever. I mean, maybe that is what's there somewhere if you dig deep into it, but yeah my interest in the game dropped as soon as you start doing the exact same thing as always.
The video, however, was excellent.
Unfortunately, Omega Quintet is a Compile Heart game, and from the First 15 it looks exactly like all of the Hyperdimension Neptunia games. It's clear they use the same engine, with the same style of area layouts, and the same core design with just a few tweaks.
So expect low framerates, constantly reused assets, recycled dungeon tiles and layouts, and poorly balanced and overly simple combat systems. They pretty much churn out otakubait jrpgs these days.
The game you *did* describe with music-oriented combat and rhythm components is actually awesome, and it's called Ar Tonelico. The third entry is a little heavy on the fanservice, but 1, 2 and Ciel NoSurge (the prequel) are all absolutely amazing JRPGs.
It's a shame that they skipped past where the idol is acting in character on camera and normally has a completely different personality. Probably wouldn't help Mike's opinion on it, anyway. Also they kept doing magic skills and didn't R1/L1 over to the mic skill tab which are more interesting looking attacks. Again moot point, since it looks like JRPGs are not Mike's thing.
This game is mostly about setting up combos with your five characters. You set up your wait timers (order of attack) so multiple characters attack one after the other. Then you harmonize, which groups those characters allowing you to pick from any of them in any order for their attacks. If you pick the right attacks in the right order, they will do team attacks. Nice and flashy the first few times, but soon you'll hold a button to skip animations.
I played on easy, so I didn't' have to deal with this. Tough monsters/bosses show who they'll attack next and maybe even warn you of a very strong attack coming up. Which you use attacks that change the monsters wait timer so they attack a different person or cancel out their strong attack.
It also has the usual 'pick the correct element type' mechanic.
Since the premise of the game is idols fighting monsters powered by the town's support, you can hold a concert mid battle. This basically gives you boosts and also lets the audience make requests. Block! Do a 100 hit combo! Kill a monster using only skills! Fulfilling these gives more rewards after battle.
You have 5 weapons, each character can use any weapon. Each character has a specific skill grid (like FFX) which is easier to get skills for their preferred weapon, but you can build them towards any weapon and magic skill.
This is all on top of your usual JRPG genre. Extra mechanics and an idol skin may make the game right for you.

Oh, cheers man! I might actually keep an eye out for Ar Tonelico, although I already have far too many games and not enough time for them all.

They make it worse, in fact.

Not disappointed enough to try it myself though...
