Argh! They just sent the DSTT I ordered and now i discover that they have the CycloDS. Fuck.
Hmm, really: What am I missing with the DSTT? Should I sulk or are things gonna be just fine?
It's not that big a deal. Go spend the twenty dollars you saved on a bigger SD card.
and for gods sake download YSMENU.
That's reassuring, thx! I'm looking at the SanDisk Mobile Ultra Micro Secure Digital (SDHC) 4GB, should be fine, yes?
If there is a non-Sandisk brand for the same price, get that instead. SanDisk is pretty terrible.
The DSTT works with MicroSDHC cards, though, so you're fine on that front. Some older cards (EZ-Flash V, and I think the R4?) maxed out at 2GB.
I just received my cycloDS, the new one that supposedly doesn't have the exposed/raised chip, except it does. Freaking annoying.
After putting it in my DS once I noticed two dark marks where the metal plate inside the DS' cartridge slot rubbed the edge of the chip on the Cyclo. I put it in again 3 more times, and each time the marks got darker(only subtly, but it was enough to worry about). So in other words every time you insert the cart, you're putting pressure on the chip and stressing the solder points. This is the issue that some people had with the older Cyclo cartridges, but from researching I was lead to believe this was fixed around the time the black version came out. I received a black one. So either not all black ones are the newest design, only the newest white ones are fixed, or the design flaw was never fixed at all.
Very disappointing considering the CycloDS Evo is (one of)the most expensive and lauded flashcarts. I'm gonna eat cost of return shipping and get an R4 for cheaper instead.
Seriously, which genius on the Cyclo team thought having the chip exposed, and only covered with a sticker, was a good idea?

I have a noob question...what's the best homebrew program to run/install onto my ds lite? The OP basically gives you things you can run on the DS, but I see no link or explanation of what homebrew software to install.
AFAIK, most good current flashcarts don't need software, you just need to install the latest firmware updates and then drop your files/programs etc. onto the SD card and plug it into the DS.
I have a noob question...what's the best homebrew program to run/install onto my ds lite? The OP basically gives you things you can run on the DS, but I see no link or explanation of what homebrew software to install.
Huh?
My OP is full of things to run on the DS. You download the stuff, put it on your card in whatever manner it says, patch the .nds file with the DLDI driver (only if you have an old card that doesn't do auto-patching), and run the .nds file.
I'm asking what program I have to use to allow my ds to play the homebrew games/apps. Some example, the PSP has to have custom firmware installed, the Wii needs the homebrew channel in order to boot homebrew items.
Basically I'm asking, can I just put my SL1 loader into the DS and expect all homebrew to run? Or is there a firmware/program that I need to install into the DS/onto the MicroSD card to get a game like QuakeDS to run?

Ah, I see what you mean.
For most flash carts you need the flash cart's system menu installed on the MicroSD card. You can get this from the manufacturer's site. It will vary by manufacturer. If you have a DSTT, I strongly urge you to use the YSMENU patch to the default TTMENU files if you want the interface to not completely suck; the link for it is in the OP.
Beyond that there's nothing. You don't need to install anything permanently on your DS (though you can if you want to: see the FlashMe stuff in the second post, but this is optional and risky), and if you just take out your flash cart your DS should be indistinguishable from one that has never run homebrew (unlike for the PSP or Wii).

Eh? I haven't used a lot of the newer Slot-1 cards, but none of the ones I've used have ever required you to install the system software on the memory card. Just for updates, and that's a one-time thing.

I have set up an EZFlash V and a DSTT and both required a folder full of stuff on the MicroSD card to show a menu at all. I have it on good authority that the CycloDS and the R4 also require this. Perhaps most Slot-2 cards kept that shit in firmware; I dunno.

Huh. For some reason, I was pretty sure the R4 didn't.

Could be wrong on the R4, I've never owned one, but I thought it allowed custom skins? I mean, that right there means you need a default skin, which means you need files on the card.
It's not that big a deal, though.

I dunno, but, the M3 (Slot-2) allowed custom skins too, and the default one was stored in firmware. Custom ones were stored in a folder on the card.
Edit: Same with the GBA Movie Player, I do believe.

Well, and I'm just theorizing here because I never had a full-fledged slot-2 card (the EZ-Flash 3-in-1 hardly counts) but there's a lot more room down there, even when you have to make it lite-sized, than there is in slot-1, and so they could probably fit an extra little chip full of EEPROM in there that wouldn't fit in a slot-1 card.
I will state that powder is great. That rhymes. I managed to get to the Satan looking boss at the very last level, but alas I couldn't defeat him. Like all good rogue likes, I died and had to start completely over. It was a very epic feeling though, the last few levels are wonderful.
Say, does anyone know how to dismantle a DS game cart? I can't find anything online, and I'm trying to avoid ruining the cart in the process. There are no screws under the sticker, so it apparently snaps together. When I try to pry it apart it only starts to damage the edges.

It snaps together, and I'm pretty sure there's no easy way to pry it open without breaking the plastic casing. Why do you want to open a DS cart?
I'm going to swap out the game's circuit board for the CycloDS so that it fits better and so that the chip is protected. I know it might not be possible to make it fit, but I'm going to try. I'll have to thin the walls of the casing and cut out a slot for the sd card, but I think I can make it work. If not, oh well. The only thing I'll lose is a DS game I didn't care about anyway.

That's not going to work. The whole reason the chip sticks out in the first place is because it's too thick to fit inside a normal cart. My EZ5 has the same issue, and it's not really a problem. Yeah the sticker gets scuffed a bit, but that's it. The chip is firmly on the board, and doesn't give or flex at all.
Oh man this is annoying. My DSTT arrives in the mail (yay) but now the OS from the website isn't downloading. It's just not doing anything (0 b/s), and from what I can gather from the YSMENU instructions, I need the original files (I could be misreading it, but it is hella confusing).
EDIT: Okay I got the software from a different site, nevermind.

Their website is notoriously unreliable. Here, I just put the English version of the 1.12 menu up on RapidShare.

Wow, this shit is fantastic.
AmplituDS: amazing. Didn't get it at first, but when it clicked it was fantastic. Pity the boards are so very dead, and nobody is creating songs for it
StillAliveDS is also great, the control system really clicked for me after a while.
The link for Moonshell is dead, and from another link I got overwhelmed, because there was so much shit in the .rar file:S
And pocket Physics, wow, just wow.
Everyone should get a DS flash cart and get this fantastic homebrew stuff.
Odd, I can't seem to get Ysmenu to work. I think the problem is that the TTMENU.DAT file is not really named that, in properties it says that it's called TTMENU.DAT.nds Any way to fix this?
1) Install TTMenu on your flash card. Go test that it works.
2) Download YSMenu, extract all the files to some folder.
3) Take the TTMENU.dat file from your card and move it to this folder. Run the ttextract.exe program. A few more files should appear.
4) Take the files ttdldi.dat, ttpatch.dat, and YSMenu.ini, and copy them to the TTMENU folder on your card.
5) Take the YSMenu.nds file from this folder, copy it to your card, and rename it TTMENU.dat.
that should be all you need to do.
edit: oh, I see what it must be. Shit. Ampix, you don't have "hide file extensions for known file types" on in Windows, do you? Turn that shit off. Fuck, that's the first thing I turn off when I install a copy of Windows.
DS makes a decent media player. My first gen homebrew device failed long ago though and I had a PSP in active use around then, so I never bothered replacing it.
I should probably look into what I can do with the DSL and these new fangled devices though. It's much brighter and lighter, and memory is so god damned cheap these days.

Only $36, dunno what you guys in the states normally pay for them. Guess there will be some backorders with that price though.
