    Now Sakura Clicker.

Friends don't let friends play clicker games.

No one really "plays" a clicker game.

Whenever anybody mentions clicker, I think of Catholic Mass.

I am and I don't understand the reference. Why does "clicker" make you think of Mass?

Okay I need to see that movie now. I've never been a Mass where they click as a signal to stand/sit/kneel though. Weird.

I'm also not a very good Catholic. I've lived here for 9 years and been to Mass less than once a year. So maybe it's coming back, and I just don't know.

AND IT IS MIDNIGHT! Happy birthday to me, as I come one year closer to an inevitable death in a cold uncaring existance!

NOW! It's time to announce our contest winner. Won't that be grand. But first, lets take a look at all the entries. There were a grand total of 11 entries, and I thank you all for them.

First is from @Jazz who actually took up my offer for a saucy limmerick, themed on the witcher
Geralt's birthday was known to but few,
Triss was a rare one who knew.
    They met at the tavern
And downed beer by the flagon
Not used to booze, poor Triss did spew.

Next we have Dashui with a great depiction of what snake does on his birthday.

Third we have @Quical with the monochrome story of a monichrome boy plagued by spiders in purgatory.
Lim was unable to sleep on the night leading up to his tenth birthday. He'd shut his eyes for ten minutes and then excitedly check the clock on his bedside table to see if it was an "acceptable time" to awake his parents.
    Eyes open, 02:00, eyes shut.
    Eyes open, 02:15, eyes shut.
Eyes open, 02:17. This wasn't working.
Lim stared out of his window to the forest by his house. He looked up at the stars and the moon - imagining what gifts he may receive, the friends that would show up at his birthday party, and the shape of the cake he would inevitably eat too much of.
A shooting star sped across the sky, startling Lim. He gazed in wonder as more and more continued to shoot over. Lim had never seen anything like it. He closed his eyes and wished that this day, his birthday, would be topped by no other. As he wished as hard as he could - one last shooting star, far brighter than the rest, screamed directly over his house and in to the distance. With his eyes still shut, and his mind still wishing, Lim finally fell asleep.

Morning came and Lim excitedly chowed down on his breakfast. He was wearing a new tshirt and shorts that his sister had picked out for him, and waited expectantly as his parents started to set up the party.
His friends started to arrive, each carrying a bigger gift than the last. They had party games, food on blankets under the large oak tree, and lots of cake (chocolate orange, Lim's favourite).
It seemed that everything was so perfect, but Lim's Dad had one more surprise.
He had spent a lot of time over the past couple of months setting up an obstacle course in the forest which included rope swings, ladders up trees, and the odd treehouse. Lim's Dad knew that Lim didn't ask to be moved out to the countryside from the city, and wanted to show how much he appreciated Lim's commitment to being positive and making friends. It's not easy for a child to move, but maybe this first proper birthday out here would make it up to him.
"We're going to play one more game" Lim's Dad said to the expectant children "I'm going to blindfold Lim, and you're all going to hide around the forest course that i've created. Lim will then come find you, simple enough right?" the children cheered as Lim's Dad finished, and all started to run off in to the forest.
"Don't go past the fenced area though! It's swampland out there and I haven't made sure it's safe!" He yelled, though couldn't confirm if any of the kids had listened.
Lim was blindfolded, and given one minute to wait while the children ran off.

The first couple were easy to find. Unable to decide where to hide, they settled for standing behind trees or in bushes and giggling.
Swinging with ropes, climbing up the trees, Lim found the others with ease. He was having a blast as he counted each of his friends off. Five, six, seven. Only two left.
Lim looked everywhere, in each of the treehouses, up practically every tree but couldn't find them. He went further in to the forest and started walking along the fence. Eventually he came across Russell, crying next to a broken bit of fencing.
Lim hadn't spoken much to Russell, but had always looked up to him in school. Russell was best friends with Tim, an adventurous and popular kid who always lead the way with his group of friends. Tim didn't like boundaries, however, and always pushed rules to the limit.
Russell explained that Tim had run past the fencing and across the puddled grass around ten minutes ago and, despite Russell's yells, hadn't returned.
Lim told Russell to get going back to the house and that he would go grab Tim. Swamps were difficult to get across so he couldn't have gone far. Russell nodded, and headed back. Lim looked at the broken fencing, and carefully climbed over.

The ground was wet and sticky, and Lim's feet were starting to get soggy through his shoes. The sun had started to set above the treeline.
He had called Tim's name a number of times to no response, and had no idea how long he had been walking. Could it have been another ten minutes, or an hour?
Puddles started to increase in size, and soon he was wading through mud that came up to his knees. After slipping and falling a few times, and getting far dirtier than he had wanted, Lim heard a whimper in the distance.
He darted forward, pushing as hard as he could through the mud until he saw Tim, neck deep in the middle of a pond. He had fallen in while running without looking, and his foot was stuck - caught on something in the muddy water.
Lim started to panic, and looked for something to reach out to Tim with. He pulled a large log that was lying nearby and pushed it out in to the pond. It bumped in to Tim's head, and knocked Tim completely under.
Lim quickly jumped on to the log, tears in his eyes, his hands shaking. The log was mossy and slippery, it bobbed in the water. Lim reached the other end carefully but couldn't see below the mud. He reached in, trying desperately to find Tim.
But the log gave way, and Lim fell in as well. He sunk immediately, his wet clothes holding him down. He felt his feet touch the bottom and he opened his eyes. In front of him was a girl he didn't recognize. Looking up he saw that Tim's foot was caught on her clothes. He was floating motionless in the pond.
Everything started to go grey, and then black. Lim shut his eyes to the sound of his name being yelled.

    Darkness.
Lim was stuck in darkness for what seemed like forever but, eventually, he opened his eyes. He could see a treeline above him, and felt grass below him. He heard animal noises in the distance and, further away than the animals, a mechanical grinding noise.
He looked around, and was startled by two things. Not only was he in a part of the forest that he had never seen before...

But also the colour in his eye-line was gone, and all he could see was grey.

But wait! A wild @HiT BiT appears with another depiction of what snake does.
    DGBzqxN.jpg

next up is @RoyceSraphim with a WRITTEN depiction of snake's birthday.
The day started out well enough for David. The newspaper had nothing of any new wars building up, there were no signs of trespass, his bones didn't creak with new plagues, his plants were growing nicely. After dressing well enough for his day, and ensuring a sharpened knife lay inside his jacket, he set out for his favorite smoke shop.

As he walked the familiar roads, he felt eyes upon him. The road seemed a bit too empty for his liking, the ravens a bit too silent. A young woman caught his attention and asked for the time. The red octopus on the lapel of her suit unnerved David, but his military training suppress the tension and delivered a kind report. He and the lass went their separate ways and a nagging suspicion about the day nagged at his mind.

Approaching the only crosswalk between him and his goal, a yellow car drove by, emblazoned with the sign of a raven. Inside a young woman was viewing an American Abrams tank on her touchpad. She turned to meet David's eyes and her native American features struck a cord within him, bringing back the taste of sulfur and the cold of snow. She drove off and he pondered the intersection of memories and input.

Crossing the intersection, he turned left down the street and grew tense at footsteps behind him. As he rushed faster, he heard the strange steps increase tempo as well. Ducking into an allyway, he hid from view, and tripped the shadow, dragging him into the ally in one swift move, chocking the stranger into unconsciousness. When the clown's makeup began to smear onto his coat and hands, Dave suddenly realized his past was beginning to make him a bit reckless.....again. He heard the celebration of a boy opening presents above him and cheers about a model Hind-D with spring loaded rockets.

After a quick cleanup with his hankerchief (wiping away fingerprints and makeup), he quickly borrowed the clown's seltzer bottle to blast him full force in the face and making a quick retreat before the shocked individual could awake. The petite blond in a blue wolf hoodie greeted him warmly as she passed by, her taught muscles bouncing in motion with his heart, he pondered if his harlequin victim would garner her attention.

Quickly approaching the storefront's shadow, the picture of Charleton Heston's famed Ten commandments greeting him like a splash of icy cold water. As he entered the smoke shop, a woman in purple headphones with a matching pair of bug eyed sunglasses passed by him. He nodded her fashionable appearance warmly while she greeted him with a pair of cigar cutters in each hand, backing out the door.

Exhaling as he reached the end of this long tunnel of a morning, Dave asked for his private stash of cigarettes, rolled from his own grown and dried stock. Taking out his old lighter, and flipping it open to light the aged tobacco, he noticed something odd in the familiar sensation. He smelled the cigarette closely and found it passable, but noticed his right hand going numb. On the back of his palms, he further noticed slap patches that were tingling on what little sensation he had on his skin. Curious why he had not noticed it earlier, he eyed his trusty lighter and was shocked at what he found.

Gone was the familiar Fox Hound logo, instead was a regular Zippo lighter with a sticker that read, "Happy Birthday, Snake"

Waking up in the fog of the drugs, Snake appreciated the timed effect of the slap patches. The tension at his wrists let him know he was bound standing and spread, the rocking of the boat let him know they had left land and were currently sailing. Four sets of footsteps made muffled sounds on the carpet of the room and the smell of tobacco and burning wood pleased his nose and stirred old memories of comfort. Looking up at his captors, he observed the four women he had passed that day, stark naked sans body paint in their colors and each carrying animal masks representing the animals of his old unit, sans the his brother(s).

The red ocelot strode forward, and playfully tossed a shock stick in hand, studying his form.

"Your friend said you guys have a five year hiatus on these things, to keep it from getting too wild, sometimes skipping years to keep each other on your toes."
Snake laughed, "Ha, I already had the Gundamn, Patlabor, and Zaku lingerie designed and made for later this year. I do have some extra slots to share once we're done here. Ten percent more than he paid you."
Red Octopus cast a glance at the rest of the menagerie, and cocked her head to one side, her red skin shining in the sunset bathing the yacht.
"We'll talk later, what is it you guys do anyway?"
    "Philanthropy."
    "Neat, engaging Mission:Happy Birthday."

and next we have @Kanden showing off...errr...I forget his name. He's the just cause guy. He blows things up. You might have heard of him.

@chocobolicious taking the unique entry method by sending his entry in a gift message of fairy fencer F! A haiku about the main character from said game.
    Fang would eat and sleep
    That would be his ideal
    great birthday party

@jeix letting us know that Ryu is not a fan of cake
    MOQQKeX.jpg

@Jclast giving us a taste of a birthday in the life of Laura Croft
She decided to go for a swim. The water was cool and refreshing, but she just couldn't bring herself to leave her bow behind. Everything else remained on shore. Much as she wanted to keep the pistol, rifle, and shotgun on her at all times they were useless wet. The bow wouldn't let her down though. Nothing stopped the bow, and nobody could take her down when she was wielding it.

Just then the current sped up and took her down river. She hadn't explored the river in its entirety so the cave entrance was a surprise. The traps were unexpected, too. As she was rushed down the river and knocked about on the rocks she narrowly avoided being impaled on a spike trap and then tumbled down a small waterfall. Gurgling and gasping for air she was spotted by crazy locals. They'd been stranded here for years and weren't fond of newcomers. "I wonder how they grow their numbers, it seems to be all crazy guys and when they do find a woman they try to kill her!" she thought as she dove for cover, nocked an arrow, and hit the first attacker in the throat. Four left, one with a shotgun. He was next, and he took several arrows to take down. She was running low and needed to recover the four arrows she'd already spent. It would be risky, but it was the only way forward. She rolled forward, grabbed one arrow from the first attacker, and then immediately spent it to take out another. No arrows and two attackers left. Thankfully both were without weapons. She rolled from side to side until she saw an opportunity to use her climbing axe to great effect. Got one in the eye and it got stuck in the second. Now that all five were down there was ample time to draw the axe back out and wash it off in the river.

After an invigorating climb back up to her supplies, Lara though to herself "Best. Birthday. Ever." and went back to reading the "Bow Maniacs with Great Hair" article in this month's Cosmo magazine.

and finally @shdwcaster with a Haiku composed by Mariko "Spirit" Tanaka from Wing Commander
    Another year past
    Comrades, love, enemies gone
    I remain to fight

And now for our winner. All these entries were great, so I ended up going with the entry that amused me the most And so the winner is Dashui because that image raised so many questions. All of which I loved thinking about.

Again. Thank you all for your entries. You made a somewhat bad night just that much better.

So I just beat Electronic Super Joy: Groove City, which is an absolutely great sequel to the first game (albeit on the shorter end, but it's priced accordingly). Soundtrack is great, story is silly, jumping is tight, just like last time. There's just one thing that I will note: there is one spot (and trust me, you WILL know it) where the game advises jumping just before landing. It's fucked. It's impossible, like seriously. Apparently if v-sync is working properly (it wasn't for me), you can do it, but otherwise you need to get some external third party program to lock the game to 60 FPS, because the hit detection is refreshing too much if you're at a higher frame rate, and you WILL die. Like, it should be hypothetically possible without it locked, but it'd require four pixel-perfect jumps in a row. Died for 5 straight minutes, with average lifespan of 2 seconds, then got it on my first try once I locked the framerate. Dev really needs to fix that.

    Other than that? Awesome game.

If anyone else is looking to preorder Mad Max I recommend you get it from ozgameshop (do not need to be from Australia) for the low-low price of AU$30.99 (or a frankly criminal US$22.85). I have no idea why its so low, but I've gotten a bunch of Steam keys from them before without incident

I mean, hypothetically, Backloggery could do it if you just say "this system means TV" or something like that. I'm not aware of any unified website/application, though.

    Other than like, excel.

That's not a bad idea, but a.) it doesn't pull in data automatically like imdb account or letterboxd, and b.) I've always felt like the backloggery interface was a little unwieldy.

    Also

Oooo... this looks like it could be really good!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Pd77KwZdT8

    From Daedalic website:
Daedalic Entertainment and Swedish developer Forgotten Key will send players into the mystic 3rd-person exploration adventure AER in 2016.

AER puts players in the shoes of Auk, a pilgrim girl, to explore an unbelievable open world beneath her feet and wings. Wings? Yes, indeed! Auk has a rare gift: She can turn into a bird and is one of the few people who can reach even the most remote places in her homeland of flying islands, in search for the “Memories of the Past”. On her journey she encounters other shape shifters, visits the ruins of the old gods and has to face dark creatures to revive the world of AER from menacing shadows.

In a genre mix between action adventure and flight exploration, players will join Auk on her pilgrimage. The surreal style of AER will be accompanied by reduced but colorful low poly graphics that underline the quiet tone of the game in a fitting way.

AER will be published worldwide on PlayStation®4, Xbox One™, PC, Mac and Linux by Daedalic Entertainment. The game will be released in 2016.

I want to put it on my wishlist right now but there's no page! Seems like something that @Pixelated Pixie and @Berylline (among many others) might want to keep an eye out for.

When I joked about an Animorphs game, I wasn't anticipating a gaming that reminded me of Animorphs to be released........

Any games that could be described as "girly" as some of the barbie games at their beginning and character design like some of the tablet hair styling games put out, but whose long term gameplay is manic tribute to Metal Slug and Contra?

Despite how long this post will probably be, I feel almost at a lost for words. This will come off a bit rambly.

During the Winter Sale, I picked up all 3 Deponia games as a bundle. The purchase was on a whim based entirely on how pretty they looked. I think I was still riding on a Point and Click high after how much fun I found Broken Age to be. I quickly installed the first game and booted it up. It was indeed pretty and the puzzles were kinda fun and challenging, but while I was playing it I felt somewhat uncomfortable throughout the game. I'm not sure how many of you have played it, so I'll keep my concerns in a spoiler.
The main character of the series is a man-child by the name of Rufus. He is an almost immediately unlikeable person. He is crass, selfish, and by all accounts, a loser. That's fine. With how none of the other characters seemed to put up with his shit, we have a perfect foil for his shenanigans. I figured this is someone who the developers can point at and say, "This is a bad person. Watch how much of a screw up he is. " Plenty of room for mistakes to be learned from and character growth. I will get back to his shining personality later.

The rest of the characters seemed to all have colorful, distinct personalities, but there was a severe lack of representation of minorities. There are almost zero non-whites and only three women that I could recall. One of those women was a throw-away trans joke. Another is Rufus's ex girlfriend who, despite being a homeowner, business owner and all around successful person, is reduced to a nag. She should have nothing to do with Rufus's sorry ass, but for the sake of Rufus being the protagonist, she tolerates his shitty behavior.

Finally we come to the main heroine of the series. This is the woman who seems to be the only person who wants to save the world from destruction, (Rufus, the main character, only wants to use her to escape the planet) and is almost immediately knocked out after her introduction. She remains in a catatonic state for most of the game. Rufus and all the other men of the town, try to convince the mayor that Goal, in all of her unconsciousness, should be placed in their care. Did I mention her name is GOAL! :( Yeah.

To win her (it hurts to type that out), you go about collecting items and solving puzzles in your typical Point and Click fashion to try and sabotage the other men. A few of the items you get from Rufus's ex girlfriend's shop. You do this by DRUGGING HER AND STEALING THEM! This is played for laughs.

Later in the game, after Rufus has fled the town with limp Goal in tow, she wakes up. Finally!

Oh, no wait. You can shut her off with the touch of a button. On. Off. On. Off. Hijinks! :(

The finale revolves around Goal's fiance, who looks just like Rufus, wanting her back. This is not because he loves her, but because she has the accession codes in her head needed to escape the planet. She is only a means to an end. The Villain has the same goalmotivation as the "Hero"! Sure, he wants to erase some of her memory, but really he treats her with about the same amount of respect as Rufus. Rufus, in a surprisingly selfless act, tricks him into not erasing her memory, which, hopefully, will somehow save the planet from doom. Or something.

Did he learn his lesson at the end? Was all of this some kinda commentary on women as objects? Could this be satire? I tried to give the benefit of the doubt to Daedalic and give weak excuses to all the things that made me uncomfortable, as I really wanted to like this game.

I was in no hurry to play the second game and it sat on my backlog for some time. A few days ago, I finally gritted my teeth and dived into Chaos on Deponia.
It starts off right where the last game left off. But what's this? It was good?! The first two major puzzles are hilarious and fun. The dialog is witty. Rufus is still a jackass, but perhaps a better man than when we last saw him. All of this is short lived as it literally comes crashing down with the rest of the scene. Now Goal (she's back) has had her personality split into three due to a botched surgery: Lady Goal (Posh Spice), Spunky Goal (Scary Spice), and Baby Goal (uh...Baby Spice). Apparently, that's all she is. Well, fuck! And, like her ON/OFF mode from the last game, can be switched between each of these personalities at the touch of a button. Not wanting to go through another surgery to fix the last one, she runs away to the nearest tavern.

The biggest part of the rest of the game is to convince each personality to come back to the Doc to do the surgery again. You do this by making the personalities like you. This is disgusting, as it's done in the most PUA way you can imagine. It's even more apparent that this is what it is when you convince another character to seek out his violent ex just so you can learn a magic phrase that can calm her fiery passion. Again, I had to ask myself, is this satire? And if it is, is it so bad that it just becomes what it is trying to mock?

Remember when I said we would get back to Rufus's winning charisma? Did he change for the better? Yeah, no. They developers doubled down on asshat with an extra helping of pig. And this time, we have none of the other characters calling him out on it. There is no straight man to his awful. We are supposed to be rooting for this sociopath as he cackles to himself for every misdeed and putdown. He is so damn unlikable it nearly loops back around on itself that you almost feel sorry for him. Almost.

Oh, and before I forget. There is a collecting minigame throughout Chaos where you find pieces of paper that fills in a part of a jigsaw. When the puzzle is complete you get a nude pin-up of Goal.

    Sigh

It was becoming a near Herculean task to find excuses and ignore the now roar of uncomfortableness this series was giving. But, seeing as I was a completionist and I did already own the third game, I started to install Goodbye Deponia. Then this was posted:
Isn't Daedalic that company that makes weirdly racist cartoon games?
That's the one although not all their games are weirdly racist. They also do the Blackguards game which I haven't heard anything racist about those though I haven't made it very far. I'm not even sure all the deponia games are racist. I think it was just a couple choices in one game.

Yep, I could believe it. Now to do what I should have done before I bought it. I Googled up some reviews.

    rockpapershotgun.com/2013/11/11/wot-i-think-goodbye-deponia/

    I immediately stopped the install.

It will forever sit on my backlog unplayed.

Like the RPS review says there was so much to like in this series that it is down right heartbreaking that it is garnished with so much awfulness. I'm even more saddened by how amazing looking AER seems. I have a great love for the Low Poly art movement and I'm always clamoring for more games done in this style. I won't be picking up AER or any other Daedalic game until I know they have grown more than their goose of a protagonist in this goose of a series.

I'm sorry if this is a rambling mess and don't know if I even managed to make any kind of point. I feel ashamed that I even tried to pretend all was okay as I played through these games. :(

Yeah that's the entire point of the Deponia series. It's dark misanthropic humor. There are not any likeable characters and everything is terrible. The world is a trash heap. Everyone wants something from everyone else and is willing to do horrible things without a second thought.

I don't think this means the developers are terrible people, or that they advocate terrible things.

Despite how long this post will probably be, I feel almost at a lost for words. This will come off a bit rambly.

During the Winter Sale, I picked up all 3 Deponia games as a bundle

This is when I knew you were in trouble.

Was the monkey with a little hat still in the game?

So this game. Journey of the Light.

The game is advertised to have 7-8 chapters. It has achievements for completing 8 chapters.

    https://imgur.com/a/yceJt

The story is explained at that imgur link but basically. There is nothing but chapter 1. Nobody can complete chapter 1. And there is no evidence that any of the other chapters exist. At all.

    Very sketchy.

I posted this a few days back.

Said game is now removed from the store and Valve posted this.
We have enabled refunds for all owners of Journey of the Light, regardless of playtime or purchase date. If you wish to receive a refund for this title, please click the link below and follow the instructions on the Support Site.

Oh man, I'm tempted, @Teeman! That game looks awesome! Thanks for posting that. That's a crazy good deal

Woah, that's cheaper that I got it with my credits even on GMG. Going to see if I can return it to GMG and do this instead. Thanks for the heads up, you're a fine person!

The only Catholic stuff I know is 'testicles, spectacles, wallet, and watch'. Being Baptist/non-denominational though - it's a fairly useless bit of information to know.

    Subnautica Update! Yes!

Ends Saturday at Noon CST. Open to G&T Adventure Team

I seriously am in love with Subnautica. I played about 2 hours last night, starting a new game for a fresh start, and here's what I had done by the end. (Would that I could've kept going.)

    Thoughts from last night:

The new base pieces are pretty cool. Definitely makes me excited to expand expand expand.
Undersea caves still give me the willies. But in a good way.
It's amazing how much faster you can tech up in Subnautica when you know what to look for and where.

    That's goddamn awesome. A deserved win, @Dashui !

ozgameshop is cheap because they are a grey market site (you can tell a site is grey market if they sell Blizzard CD keys, as no place but Battle.net is actually contracted to do so). So you assume a bit a risk for the cheaper price.

Though FWIW they seem to have a great rep as far as grey market site's go.

The only bummer about this game is that it is single-player only. I use to be all about singleplayer but now playing these kinds of survival/exploration games just seem like the perfect type of cooperation game--I've kept away from pvp in Ark until they get in the alternate game mode in.

Still, keep up the good hype.

@destroyah87 , you've made me feel so very old.

When you posted about Subnautica, I looked into it. I saw that the Developer was Unknown Worlds. I recognized that name from WAAAY back in 2002, these are the guys that did Natural Selection. I was a frequent poster on those forums, and remember having some really good conversations with Flayra, the main dev. I was absolutely thrilled that a developer would reply back to me directly, and interact with their players in such a meaningful way. Checking out the Subnautica webpage, I see they're still really interactive with players, and have a whole dev tracking thing that shows what everyone is working on, and what's going into the next patch, etc.

So no question, I'm buying this game. I want to know though, are you spoiling the game by playing Early Access? Are they holding back some maps or game modes for release, or is it all being released in EA? For example, The Long Dark is in EA for Survival mode only, so that they can perfect all their systems. For release, Survival Mode is getting an expanded map, and they have whole Story Mode as well.

Yeah, with more depth (ha-ha) in the base building, world modifying, or tougher/more enemies, Subnautica would be amazing in multiplayer. A quick google check shows that the devs have said multiplayer is something they would love to introduce, if feasible, but not yet. Nothing more recent, at least not that I see in a minute-ish of google searching.
