I've been needing a space shooter fix, and at 19.99 at Best Buy, I'm leaning towards this game.
Shamelessly ripped from Metacritic, courtesy of the publisher:
DarkStar One is an open-ended action/adventure title set in a huge universe populated by a variety of unique alien races. Players will take on the role of an intrepid young adventurer, Kayron Jarvis, as he explores space, upgrading and customizing his ship – the DarkStar One. The game's story, written by renowned German Fantasy and Science Fiction author Claudia Kern, will immerse players in a tale of action and intrigue as Kayron searches for answers surrounding the death of his father. Players can take a number of different paths and approaches to earn money and upgrades as they solve the mystery of the death of Kayron's father. One may play as trader, mercenary, smuggler, pirate or a combination thereof, customizing tactics to suit individual playing styles. A fully customizable and upgradeable ship – the DarkStar One. Players can create a fast attack boat, heavy cruiser or other combined style of ship from parts purchased or captured from enemies. More than 200 weapons, shields and equipment upgrades -- including rockets, torpedoes and mines, each featuring a special tactical or trade benefit.
# Elaborate story, related by more than fifty minutes of video sequences
# Upgradeable space ship "Darkstar One": The player decides which type of spacecraft he prefers - a fast attack ship with many light weapons or a near-invincible cruiser with heavy weaponry
# Over two hundred different weapons, shields and equipment items
# Rockets, torpedoes and mines feature special tactical uses: mines can tactically fire at opponents or distract approaching missiles
# The "Spell Weapon": the player will have a special weapon at his disposal that will have an area of effect similar to certain spells in role-playing games. This weapon will become increasingly versatile throughout the game and it will increase the tactical potential considerably.
# A vast, simulated universe with numerous, completely different races, space ships and battle tactics.
# Each race features distinctive weapon types with different functions that require different battle tactics. The player will be able to acquire these weapons in order to mount them on the "Darkstar One".
# Special missions, for example in canyons, on the surface of planets or inside of planets
# Freedom of choice: the player may earn his credits in many ways, i.e. fighting, piracy, assignments, smuggling, trading, escorting, transporting, rewards ...
# The player may act as the "good" or the "bad" guy and he will be able to take advantage of political disputes.

So, should will this game let me finally fly around and have fun like Privateer, or am I better off picking up the X3/X2 two pack via steam that comes with X3's expansion pack?
Opinions, complaints, gripes about the OP commence!

I actually just now became aware of this game but it looks very nice.
From the time I've spent on these boards, I've noticed more people grief about less info in the OP than more info. I thought I would just play it safe
I bought Darkstar One a while back. While you are free to fly around and have fun, there's not as much fun to be had as privateer. Most of the activity in a system takes place along the narrow lane between the trade station and the subspace portal. A couple systems per sector have a pirate base or two to knock out, but overall, I just didn't think there was enough going on in the free play like that.
There's also some strict limits on how much you can fly around. Not sure if this counts as a spoiler, but going to be safe in case I ramble while explaining:
Most of the real activity in the game is story based or one-time events (like the pirate bases and occupied systems). After th at, all that's left is random encounters, and IMO, most of those are pretty weak.
Not a bad game, but I wouldn't go so far as to say Freelancer. Seeing as the space sim genres been pretty sparse of late, it was at least a break from Freespace 2.

I'd never heard of Space Force 2. Awesome, thanks for the heads up! :^:
Darkstar One? It's a solid space shooter, but it's not really open ended. It also has some of the worst voice acting since Resident Evil.
Still fun, but I might prefer reinstalling Freelancer.
