I bought a house a few weeks ago. It was the right thing to do, we were tired of renting and were ready for our own place. But we live in an expensive area (Metro DC) and don't have super fancy jobs so we got a big house (relatively) that needs work.

So far we've pulled out all of the carpet, completely disassembled the bathroom, and decided to move the kitchen. We need to move in by the end of the month, mind you.

All we need to do to be move in ready is reassemble the bathroom and the kitchen and refinish the floors, no biggie right? Except we're doing most of that ourselves, with support from our extended families, who all live 3 hours away and have been more than generous with their time so far but do not have infinite availability.

I'm swinging between hyperventilating and being sure that it'll all get done and be fabulous.

I'm going to post some project pics as they happen in here, I figure some of you own or semi-own some property that you've done work to or want to show off? If you don't then holy shit man, try to buy a house you can move right into, I am confident that it would be much easier than what we've decided to do.

Congrats. I don't know if I'll ever make up my mind on getting property. I just don't want to be tied down to anywhere and I loathe the suburban lifestyle.

But if they are honest house elves don't kill them or you'll suffer terrible bad luck.

owning a house has been a good thing for me despite the incredible costs

luckily the property appreciation has offset almost every nickel I've had to spend

Congrats, I'm right there with you. Got the keys to my place awhile ago but I've had limited time to renovate due to a hectic work schedule. Only thing keeping me mostly sane is working off a big ass list and checking things off as I go. Seems to help with getting overwhelmed and you get that sweet sweet sense of accomplishment as you knock things out

I just moved here two years ago, almost exactly, and nobody has done any stuff that I knew about since then! I am very friendly and now have a house with a stupid basement, people in the DC area we should party when my house is not a bombed out wasteland anymore. Pics are below, imagine it without all of that guy's hideous furniture.

You are moving straight into the early 70s!

That will be a sweet bar and hangout area when you're done with it though.

The house I currently live in was a right mess when we first got it. Had to replace near all the carpets, add a sump pump because it's built over an old spring, paint most of the walls which were already done in saturated dark colors, and deal with a termite infestation within the floorboards of the front entrance.

    best of luck friend

Acutally, I think the wainscoting is pretty sweet and the fireplace. You might be able to do a Neoartdeco thing. Some roaring 20's updated, classy bar style.

My wife is going through the basement in her mind with fire and hammer and I'm fighting to preserve what I can, I think it's dope and ridiculous.

  • KwoaruKwoaru Registered User regular
You can only keep the basement as it is if you keep spare leisure suits for your guests to put on when they enter

Just get rid of the paneling please.

Well, that wallpaper has got to go, but the bar and the wainscoting should stay. That built in bench is awesome. The fireplace should stay. Ceiling needs work. Metal tiles would be nice.

Honestly you could really class it up and modernize without too much work.
