I've unlocked 3 items it seems. They are somewhat rare, but they should be able to be unlocked in any mode that you can unlock other items.
It feels like I've only unlocked an item every 6 games or so.
I've been playing this again after finally getting round to purchasing all the DLC along with some stuff for Destiny.
Couple of things I've noticed:
The Delorean is amazingly awesome. Do not regret purchase at all.
Randos that just ball-chase and hit it in any direction they can are still the bane of my existence.

Gibbs' series Playing with Potatoes is a great watch and has some good advice for how to coexist with the ball chasing masses. You'll never be free of them, by the way. Be aware that his RP is rapidly outpaced by his hidden matchmaking score, so after a couple matches in he's playing people in the 200-300 RP range.
The most basic rules:
1. Don't trust anyone.
2. Avoid the chaos.
3. Never go for faceoffs.
The slightly more advanced tips:
1. Just keep lobbing it at the other team's goal.
2. Play defensively, about a quarter of the field back from the ball.
3. Take the ball from your teammates if you have a good clear or shot.
4. Hog the boost like crazy, you deserve it.
This was a good read, thanks for sharing. The free patch this month, hockey mode in december, plus presumably some sort of sale will all be loads of fun as a lot of people come back to or get into the game.

Mutators
Mutators have officially arrived; featuring a suite of alternative presets and settings that add depth, variety, and crazy rocket-powered fun to custom games.
"Mutator Mashup" has been added to the Online playlist menu. This playlist allows users to face off in a 3v3 online playlist that cycles randomly through the following mutator presets:
Beach Ball - A huge, slow, lightweight ball with a lot of bounce
Cubic - Cube shaped ball and recharging boost
Moonball - Low gravity action with a whole lot of boost
Pinball - The ball is small, light, fast and bouncy… and a lot to handle
Time Warp - Slow down the action as you get close to the ball
"Mutator Settings" menu has been added to the Create Match screen in Exhibition and Private Match. This menu allows users to users to alter their Exhibition/Private Match with the following presets and options:

But it's still so, so, so good. The wheels fold up when you turbo. Done.
