Flipping forward repeatedly is the quickest way to move without using the boost. As for the boost, once it changes color / you hear and see the aftershock type effect you can let off because it's not going to get any faster.

When you double jump, your jump takes you higher if your direction stick is neutral.
If you're pressing a direction, the double jump executes a flip.
You can flip forward, backward, to either side, or in a diagonal direction (though I'm not sure if you can do a backward diagonal flip)

The easiest way to do this is to hold forward and the accelerator, and just double tap the jump button.

Flipping gives you an instantaneous boost in momentum in the direction you flipped. If you're going forward, flipping forward will make you go faster, flipping backward will usually stop you right in your tracks, etc. As Qanamil mentioned, you have a max speed, which is also called "supersonic," and you can tell when you're supersonic because you'll be trailing colors.

You can get first touch usually if you flip at about halfway toward the ball on the faceoff, but getting first touch is usually not actually a good idea. The better plan is to flip forward into the ball such that the roof of your car makes square contact with the ball. That's the safe play. If you think you can get to the ball and hit it before they even get there, then sure, go for first touch. Or, if you think the opponent is going the safe route, you can try to play mind games and get to the ball more slowly than normal so you guarantee yourself the second hit, since when two people come at the ball, the second hit is usually advantaged.

As for goalkeeping, when the ball is in the corner, a good reliable strategy is for one person to be actively battling the ball, one person to be near the close corner of the goal and facing the ball, and one person to be further back near the goal's opposite corner. Respectively we'll call this challenge, keeper, and reserve.

If the challenge tries and fails to clear the ball downfield, and is unable to instantly follow up, they rotate to reserve. At this point, keeper either (1) makes the save/deflects an incoming set or (2) moves into the corner, either of which put him into the challenge position. Reserve moves into the keeper position.

If reserve sees an opportunity, they can leave their post to take it, but they should not risk disrupting the keeper.

In doing so, you always have someone attempting a clear, and you should never have the challenger immobile and thus unable to make a strong clear. You always have a keeper, even when someone is rotating and thus out of position to play the ball during a shot on goal.

Depending on the skill level of the people you're playing with, and their general styles, this formation tends to happen organically. Though it becomes less likely as your teammates skill gets lower, and as their style gets more aggressive.

If you have a teammate who is super passive they'll probably stick to keeper, and you'll want to rotate directly between challenge and reserve. If you have two teammates who are super aggressive, you'll probably want to let them challenge and rotate between goal and reserve (both hyper aggressive and hyper defensive players tend to crowd the keeper position when there's a shot on goal imminently threatened, and in these situations you want to get to a place where you can play the ball if they miss)

Why haven't I jumped in on this sooner? This game is amazing.

Started with a few colleagues, was 03:30 before we noticed we should get some sleep. I need to get better at aerials and keeping high balls ...

Is there a PA steam group for this?

Soccer cars is the best game.

I don't think there is a specific PA steam group yet, so I made one: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SOCCERCARS

There's also a list of people in the OP but I've only managed to play with two or three of them.

Ah so many questions and tactics I want to debate. Fantastic game.

Boost is the fastest way to accelerate, double jumps are the most efficient way to accelerate and stay accelerated. You'll eventually be able to double jump in any direction (forward, forward left, left, back left, back, back right, right, forward right, etc) with 100% consistency.

I want to say no, unless one of their patches in the last few months has enabled this. But I also want to say you might be able to join the same private lobby however?

Welp. I have found my game, and it is this one.

I just started tonight and I am already deeply in love. I plan on putting a lot of hours into this game.

Eventually I want to join a team and a league and play seasons or whatever.

Is there any way other than "just do it" to learn how to play via ball cam instead of car cam?

  • crimsoncoyotecrimsoncoyote Registered User regular
    No, not really...

Doing the trainings is probably a good idea though. Goalie and Aerial training on the hardest levels both make you react quickly and meet the ball to accomplish their 'goals'. Ball cam is off by default in training, so you have to remember to turn it on immediately.

  • ElbasunuElbasunu Registered User regular
I started playing in ball cam so this car cam stuff throws me off, haha. I switch to car cam when the ball is overhead (so i don't screw up other teammates) and when i'm tackling the goalie.

No, just do it. Ball cam for life, car cam for moments you specifically need it: dribbling, some rams, some wall hits, checking player/field locations, lining up for boost.

Also, here's your soccer car video of the day, demonstrating a time when I turn off ball cam:

I'm almost 100% ball-cam myself, except in rare instances when I'm trying to line up something or not get in the way of someone else I know is close by. It is indeed disorienting at first, but the more you play with it on, the more it clicks. Eventually it'll become second nature to understand how your car moves in relation to the angle the camera is looking at it.

You really should be favouring ball cam. Just start now before you cement yourself otherwise.

The pros are switching back and forth furiously, but in general ball cam takes precedence.

First video - having ball cam on will eventually help you hit the ball in all the clips from the intro.

Second video - I skipped to a random point: "There's a lot of depth in the controls. Which I don't exhibit." :goes flying off the wall randomly:

Good stuff, made me laugh! One reason rocket league is cool is because there's no skill ceiling, so you're always gonna look awesome to some people and terrible to other people and have room to improve regardless.
