The order is Jump - Aim - Turbo to fly. Adjusting course after that is only minor, and likely to get out of control. If you still have aim down when you press Turbo you are going too end up all over the place.

I'm ok at hitting the static targets but moving aerials are completely beyond me. I try and hit maybe 20% of the time.

This game is amazing. So intense for such a simple concept.

I'm having some trouble figuring out how to do the flying boost and aerials, I've done the tutorials but even then when I'm trying to jump and boost to hit the ball up in the air I won't fly high enough and my car just does 20 flips until it crashes to the ground. I just can't any air time fair and high enough to do anything with it. In matches I often fly under the ball as well as I try to shoot it in to the goal. Am I missing something or doing something in the wrong order?

Also always missing the ball by inches and not getting the ball and ending a match with 0 points at all is frustrating.

Couple things that help. One is to remember that holding "jump" key longer will give you more height in your jump. Second, the boosters are not very powerful in the air so you need to aim your car upward and use them to sort of hover while letting your momentum carry you forward. It's one of the trickiest things to do accurately I've found.

I'm going to disagree and say that, no. This is a skill you need to learn. Large course correction while turboing is important to score a lot of the aerials on the more advanced tutorials. It's also pretty key to how Kronovi's skill shots come around.

The key to learning how to aerial is to play with muffinatron and just continuously try to one up him in the air, no matter how much it results in failure and hurts the team

I spend a ton of time on defense too, and I'm a bit worried that I'm not picking up on certain skills like actually aiming shots, aerial shots, setting up shots, etc. because I spend pretty much every game in the back half of the court because no one else will.

I personally see no issue with this. You shouldn't really ever be idle for the most part, but you don't need to be actually taking the shots to set your team up for winning.
Clearing the ball from your side is really important, and it's much better to do that from in front of the ball instead of behind it.

Maybe 2v2s are a good way to practice both though

Whoever last back should always be ready to strike in for opportunities, it's often the best place for goals. It's also often the best place to be set up for big aerials

One tip I have picked up while watching GassyMexican play the game on YouTube is that the double jump is by far the best way to move quickly. Like, if I needed to get back in defence in a hurry, I used to use up all my boost and try to hit a few refills on the way down. A series of rapid double-jumps gets me there fractionally quicker and leaves me with a full boost bar for epic mid-air flying saves.

Now all I need to do is learn how to actually perform these epic mid-air saves and I'll be set ;)

I notice that in 4v4, a team who has a dedicated goalkeeper tends to be the ones who win. It's so disheartening when your team flails wildly at the ball for 4 and a Half minutes and finally get a shot on goal only for the keeper to casually step out and bonk the ball the full length of the pitch into an empty net :(

I'm slowly getting the hang of the flying and tilting my car to hit the ball, didn't know hitting the ball head on instead of hitting with the bottom of the car will get the ball in a random direction instead of straight on. I'm still either under or overshooting the ball at times.

Also, Bots in a online match are bonkers. I was amazed how someone could score so often with such finesse but it turned out both teams had a bot on their team. The bots were the only players that scored during the match.

Really I'm impressed by whatever coding was put in place for the bots to be so accurate. Taking physics and everything into account it's surprising they are as accurate as they are while still playing within the rules of the game.

Played this game a bit on ps4 this weekend. Really fun but I feel incompetent at hitting the ball. So many pointless jumps and dodges that hit nothing.

Also I try to position myself in a good area instead of constantly rushing to the ball but then when the ball does come my way my teammates will often both rush towards the ball and end up slamming me off course.

Not enough people stay on defense so when the ball fumbles out of the derby toward your goal, there's nobody there to save it. On the other side, the other team does the exact thing most of the time so if you're quick enough you can boost kick the ball from the kickoff in to the other goal NFL style. Managed to do it once. There's also too many people wanting to score themselves instead of alley-ooping.

I've ended multiple matches without a points as well.

I've been trying almost exclusively to play goalie and defense, and I've gotten somewhat decent at clearing incoming shots reliably. I still need some work on blocking high shots with aerials (I made my first aerial save yesterday and it was amazing) and consistently winning duels against a single striker dribbling the ball at me from center when my defenders have been juked.

Sometimes, I don't think the AI remembers what team it's supposed to be on. Multiple times, I've had one of the cars drive the ball directly into its own goal.

I had one save where the other team had a break-away against an empty goal. I flipped twice and hit boost, just barely getting enough speed to make it back and nudge the ball on the post. It jumped back out and after two guys missed a clearance, the other team got another shot on goal. But because of my momentum from the first save, I'd kept going up the back wall and onto the ceiling of the goal where I dropped off, floated down and saved the return shot while upside down. Double save!

re: defense, I have found it highly effective to play "midfield", staying in the middle two quarters of the field. This gives me space to intercept if the other team starts pushing toward my side but also puts me close enough to press forward if I see an opening.

This does mean only two people are striking but I'm not sure that is a bad thing as with all 6 players in one area you end up tripping over your own team half the time.

It also puts you in a good position to strike if the ball is centered in a good spot.

Yeah, one of the important things about doing well as a team is kind of trusting that the other people on your team will get to the ball. Having more than two of you fighting towards the ball doesn't really seem to do much.

Holy shit this game. Just played a few hours of doubles with my brother on vent. Most fun I've had in a long, long time.

The only thing I want them to change about this game is more arenas and cosmetic shit. Don't cave to the people crying for powerups!

For the last dozen or so matches the other team must have kept voting rematch because we kept getting paired with the same team again and again. Was cool though, since they were a very evenly matched team.

The Konami code from this day on should either remove the developers name from the title screen or turn your game in to a pachinko game.

@Figgy I really like that every car handles the same. And yes, more customization would be great. Add a shop in which you can buy all sorts of things with the coins you earned by playing, add daily challenges and we're done.

There are some *slight* differences in hit boxes, but that's it. I prefer it this way, since it's that much more about skill, and you can customize your car however you wish and have it still play the same.

I like to change my car every few games, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Voting "rematch" gives you the exact same teams again. Just stating "ready" throws you into a game with the same players mixed up (parties stay together) unless people leave.

  • EnigEnig a.k.a. Ansatz Registered User regular
At first I was disappointed that all the cars were the same, but this way it removes any "min max" nonsense. The game is 100% pure skill and everything else is just cosmetic fun, and I definitely think that is best.

Yeah, I think the cars being almost entirely cosmetic is a much better way to go, if there was a "best" car and such I think it would be pretty lame.

Exactly. You'd end up at the same place regardless: everyone's car is the same.

    Cosmetic options are pretty great.

I imagine it will make it over, though the original game was only on PS3 I think the amount of people that would want to play it probably makes it worth it, and the game is running on Unity so porting between the two would be relatively low in terms of dev work.

edit: NM, it's Unreal Engine 3 but it's still probably not something that would take them a ton of time I would think.

Just played my first couple of matches online, 3v3 unranked. First match, scored 2 in the first 20 seconds, and hit the post about a minute in. Ended up winning 4-2 and getting the MVP, after making 2 goal line clearances in quick succession.

Second match, ended up with an AI as the third player, who proceeded to score a double hat-trick. That wound up as an 8-1 thrashing.

Scored a flying shot in both matches too (though not high enough to count as an aerial hit), so my offline practice is slowly paying off. Still kinda suck in defence, though.

EDIT - Just did this in a ranked 3v3:
