I'm ok at hitting the static targets but moving aerials are completely beyond me. I try and hit maybe 20% of the time.
Couple things that help. One is to remember that holding "jump" key longer will give you more height in your jump. Second, the boosters are not very powerful in the air so you need to aim your car upward and use them to sort of hover while letting your momentum carry you forward. It's one of the trickiest things to do accurately I've found.

I'm going to disagree and say that, no. This is a skill you need to learn. Large course correction while turboing is important to score a lot of the aerials on the more advanced tutorials. It's also pretty key to how Kronovi's skill shots come around.

I spend a ton of time on defense too, and I'm a bit worried that I'm not picking up on certain skills like actually aiming shots, aerial shots, setting up shots, etc. because I spend pretty much every game in the back half of the court because no one else will.
I personally see no issue with this. You shouldn't really ever be idle for the most part, but you don't need to be actually taking the shots to set your team up for winning.
Clearing the ball from your side is really important, and it's much better to do that from in front of the ball instead of behind it.
Maybe 2v2s are a good way to practice both though

Big air don't care.
Now all I need to do is learn how to actually perform these epic mid-air saves and I'll be set
I notice that in 4v4, a team who has a dedicated goalkeeper tends to be the ones who win. It's so disheartening when your team flails wildly at the ball for 4 and a Half minutes and finally get a shot on goal only for the keeper to casually step out and bonk the ball the full length of the pitch into an empty net
Also, Bots in a online match are bonkers. I was amazed how someone could score so often with such finesse but it turned out both teams had a bot on their team. The bots were the only players that scored during the match.
Also I try to position myself in a good area instead of constantly rushing to the ball but then when the ball does come my way my teammates will often both rush towards the ball and end up slamming me off course.

I've ended multiple matches without a points as well.

This does mean only two people are striking but I'm not sure that is a bad thing as with all 6 players in one area you end up tripping over your own team half the time.

It also puts you in a good position to strike if the ball is centered in a good spot.
The only thing I want them to change about this game is more arenas and cosmetic shit. Don't cave to the people crying for powerups!
For the last dozen or so matches the other team must have kept voting rematch because we kept getting paired with the same team again and again. Was cool though, since they were a very evenly matched team.
You're in luck, it's on Steam, and you can use an Xbox controller!

Enter the Konami code when first loading and push start to get this lol (just a screen, no game):
@Figgy I really like that every car handles the same. And yes, more customization would be great. Add a shop in which you can buy all sorts of things with the coins you earned by playing, add daily challenges and we're done.
Wow, that dampens my interest a little bit.
There are some *slight* differences in hit boxes, but that's it. I prefer it this way, since it's that much more about skill, and you can customize your car however you wish and have it still play the same.
I like to change my car every few games, and I'd like to keep it that way.
Voting "rematch" gives you the exact same teams again. Just stating "ready" throws you into a game with the same players mixed up (parties stay together) unless people leave.

Exactly. You'd end up at the same place regardless: everyone's car is the same.
Cosmetic options are pretty great.

so frustrating.
Got a couple of sweet aerials in though.

edit: NM, it's Unreal Engine 3 but it's still probably not something that would take them a ton of time I would think.

Second match, ended up with an AI as the third player, who proceeded to score a double hat-trick. That wound up as an 8-1 thrashing.
Scored a flying shot in both matches too (though not high enough to count as an aerial hit), so my offline practice is slowly paying off. Still kinda suck in defence, though.
EDIT - Just did this in a ranked 3v3:
